Rise of the Devil's Soul

Chapter 21: Life is not a Dream

"Imagine that, old man Fu, swapping your ancient robes for a modern suit, trading your mystical incantations for a smartphone. And your wife, oh, she'd love the shopping malls. They're like markets, but bigger, brighter, and they're air-conditioned!"

Wu Xie chuckled at the thought, his laughter echoing in the room.

He leaned back, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "So, what do you say, old man? Ready to swap your magic for some modern marvels?."

Fu chuckled, a deep, hearty sound that filled the room. "Go back yourself first, then think about us," he said, his voice laced with amusement. "You're like a kid who's just learned to walk, already dreaming of running a marathon."

Wu Xie sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Stop giving me reality checks. Let me be delusional for a moment," Wu Xie exclaimed, throwing his hands up in the air in mock exasperation.

His words hung in the air, a playful protest against Fu's pragmatic advice.

He turned to Fu, a grin spreading across his face. "You know, old man, you're like that annoying alarm clock that goes off just when the dream is getting good. Can't you let me enjoy my fantasy for a bit longer?" he asked, his tone light and teasing.

Fu chuckled, his laughter echoing around the room. "Well, consider this your wake-up call, lad. Life isn't a dream, and you can't hit the snooze button when things get tough."

Wu Xie laughed at this, his earlier frustration forgotten. "Alright, alright, point taken," he conceded, raising his hands in surrender. "But just for the record, I make a pretty good hero in my delusions."

Fu shook his head, a smile playing on his lips. "I have no doubt about that, lad. But remember, even heroes need to face reality. And who knows? Maybe your reality will turn out to be even better than your delusions."

"From now on," Fu began, his voice echoing in the dimly lit room, " you will come here before the sun peeks over the horizon, and you will go back to your academy when the first bell rings, signaling the start of your classes."

He paused, a twinkle of amusement dancing in his deep-set eyes. "And as for what you tell your friends about where you've been... well, that's entirely up to you."

He leaned back in his chair, the worn leather creaking under his weight. His hand moved to his beard, stroking it thoughtfully.

"Perhaps you could tell them you've taken up early morning bird-watching," he suggested, a mischievous grin spreading across his weathered face.

"Or maybe you've joined a secret society of philosophers who meet at dawn to discuss the profound mysteries of life."

Wu Xie laughed at this, shaking his head in disbelief. His laughter, light and infectious, filled the room, bouncing off the stone walls. "Bird-watching? Philosophers?" he echoed, his eyes sparkling with mirth. "I can just imagine their faces if I told them that!"

Fu chuckled, his deep laughter joining Wu Xie's. "Well, it's certainly better than telling them you're learning ancient cultivation techniques and secret spells from an old man in the middle of nowhere," he pointed out, his eyes twinkling with mirth.

Wu Xie nodded, still chuckling. "True, true," he agreed, wiping a tear of laughter from his eye. "Bird-watching it is, then."

With that, the room filled with laughter once more, the serious atmosphere from earlier replaced with one of camaraderie and shared amusement.

Despite the challenges that lay ahead, they found joy in the moment, their shared laughter a testament to their unyielding spirit and the bond that was forming between them.

After all, a little humor goes a long way in making even the toughest journeys a bit more bearable.

The next morning, well before the crack of dawn, Wu Xie found himself once again standing at Fu's doorstep. The city was still draped in a blanket of darkness, the stars twinkling overhead like distant lanterns.

Fu greeted him with a knowing smile, holding a lantern that cast a warm glow around them. "Early bird gets the worm, as they say," Fu remarked, his voice low to avoid waking the slumbering city.

Wu Xie nodded, a sense of excitement coursing through him despite the early hour. Today was a day of learning, a step on the path of cultivation.

As they made their way through the quiet streets, the world seemed to hold its breath in anticipation of the coming dawn. The air was cool and crisp, carrying with it the promise of a new day.

Their destination was a secluded clearing on the outskirts of the city, a place Fu referred to as "Nature's Classroom."

It was a place untouched by the hustle and bustle of city life, a sanctuary of tranquility and natural beauty.
