Rise of the Reincarnated Sovereign

Chapter 4: A New path

Kael stood on the edge of the training grounds, the weight of his newfound purpose pressing on his shoulders. The Eclipse System's activation had left him reeling, but the clear objective burned brightly in his mind: Prevent Alaric's recruitment by Vorath agents. Fracture Point active in 1 hour.

His gaze shifted to Alaric, who was instructing a group of recruits in the art of swordplay. Alaric's laughter rang out as he playfully disarmed a young soldier, his demeanor easygoing and warm—a stark contrast to the cold, calculating traitor Kael remembered.

"How did it come to this?" Kael thought bitterly. Alaric had been more than a commander to him; he had been a brother in arms. The betrayal still felt fresh, but Kael forced himself to push the emotions aside. Dwelling on the past wouldn't save the future.

Kael approached the sparring circle, his steps steady but measured. Alaric caught sight of him and raised an eyebrow.

"Well, if it isn't Kael Draven," Alaric said with a grin. "What brings the mighty recruit over to my side of the yard?"

Kael stopped a few paces away, studying the man he once called a friend. His every instinct screamed to confront Alaric, to demand answers for the betrayal that hadn't yet occurred, but he knew better. Alaric wasn't the enemy—yet.

"Just observing," Kael replied evenly, masking the turmoil within. "Your recruits are looking sharp."

Alaric chuckled, wiping sweat from his brow. "Flattery won't save you when I have you sparring later. Haven't seen you pick up a blade today. Taking it easy?"

Kael forced a smirk. "Saving my energy for when it counts."

Alaric clapped him on the shoulder, the gesture so familiar it sent a pang of pain through Kael's chest. "That's the spirit. Just don't get rusty, Draven. We've got a long road ahead of us."

As Alaric turned back to the recruits, Kael's mind raced. He had less than an hour to figure out what the Eclipse System meant by "recruitment." He needed more information.

Kael stepped away from the training grounds, seeking a quiet corner near the armory. Once he was sure no one was watching, he focused inward, calling on the system.

A faint hum filled his ears as the interface appeared before him, floating in the air like a hologram. The glowing silhouette of Alaric pulsed at the center of the display, with a countdown ticking ominously beneath it: 58 minutes remaining.

"Eclipse System," Kael muttered. "What does this Fracture Point involve?"

The calm, emotionless voice responded instantly. "Fracture Points are pivotal moments where the timeline can diverge. At this moment, Alaric is at risk of being approached by Vorath agents. Their recruitment will plant the seeds of his betrayal and eventual alliance with the Vorath overlord."

Kael's heart sank. "So, this is where it starts," he murmured. "How do I stop it?"

"Observe. Analyze. Act. The Vorath agents will approach under the guise of human emissaries. Identify their deception and intervene before they secure Alaric's trust."

Kael nodded grimly. "Understood."

Kael returned to the training grounds, his eyes scanning the area for anything unusual. He saw the recruits dispersing for a midday meal, leaving Alaric alone near the weapon racks.

From the corner of his eye, Kael spotted two figures entering the grounds. They were cloaked, their movements deliberate yet unassuming. They walked with the practiced ease of mercenaries, their hands resting near their belts.

Kael's blood ran cold. These weren't emissaries—they were predators.

He moved quickly, intercepting them before they reached Alaric. "Can I help you?" he asked, his tone casual but firm.

The taller of the two cloaked figures stopped, tilting his head slightly. "We seek Commander Alaric," the man said, his voice smooth and disarming. "We bring news from the northern outposts."

Kael's jaw tightened. "Strange," he said, crossing his arms. "Last I heard, the northern outposts were abandoned after the Vorath attacks."

The man's eyes narrowed, and Kael caught the briefest flicker of annoyance.

"You're mistaken," the other figure, a woman, said quickly. "The outposts are being fortified again. Commander Alaric's leadership is requested."

Kael smirked, his voice dripping with mockery. "Of course. And I'm sure you have all the proper seals and documentation to back up this request?"

The man stepped closer, his hand drifting to the hilt of a concealed blade. "Who are you to question us, boy?" he hissed.

"Someone who doesn't trust cloaked strangers with vague stories," Kael shot back.

Before the situation could escalate further, Alaric approached, his expression curious. "What's going on here?"

The cloaked figures straightened, their demeanor shifting. "Commander Alaric," the woman began, her tone soothing. "We've come on behalf of Lord Tremain. He wishes to offer you an opportunity to secure greater resources for the kingdom."

Kael stepped in front of Alaric, his body blocking the agents' view. "Don't listen to them," he said sharply.

Alaric frowned, looking between Kael and the strangers. "What's this about?"

Kael locked eyes with him, his voice low but firm. "They're lying, Alaric. Don't trust them."

The male agent's hand shot out, reaching for a blade, but Kael was faster. He stepped forward, grabbing the man's wrist and twisting it violently. The blade clattered to the ground as the man let out a pained grunt.

"Stand down!" Kael barked, his voice filled with authority.

The woman drew a dagger, but Kael was ready. He ducked under her swing and drove his shoulder into her chest, sending her sprawling.

Alaric, stunned by the sudden violence, finally reacted, drawing his own sword. "What the hell is going on?" he demanded.

"They're Vorath agents," Kael said, keeping his eyes on the fallen pair. "They're here to manipulate you. To turn you against us."

Alaric hesitated, but Kael's conviction seemed to reach him. He stepped back, lowering his sword slightly. "If that's true, we need to take them alive."

Kael nodded. "Agreed."

The two agents exchanged a glance before retreating, their movements swift and precise. They disappeared into the shadows, leaving Kael and Alaric standing in the aftermath.

Alaric sheathed his sword, his expression a mix of confusion and suspicion. "Kael, what was that about?"

Kael exhaled, his mind racing for an explanation. "I overheard them talking about Vorath strategies earlier. Something didn't sit right."

Alaric frowned but nodded slowly. "You're sharp, Draven. Maybe sharper than I gave you credit for."

Kael forced a smile, but his mind was elsewhere. He had stopped the agents—for now. But he knew this was only the beginning.

As the Eclipse System's voice echoed softly in his mind, he felt both relief and dread.

"Fracture Point resolved. Timeline adjusted. Prepare for the next objective."
