Chapter 35: Chapter 35: The Call of Shadows
The fog crept along the forest paths like a dark tide, covering everything with its silent mantle. The trees, like spectral guardians, rose towards the gray sky, their twisted branches forming strange figures under the pale light of dawn. The air was thick, as if something was brewing in the darkness. The feeling of pressure was unbearable, as if the very spirits of the mountain were watching and waiting.
Ren walked ahead, the silver amulet in his hand, his face serious and determined. Each step he took brought him closer to his goal, but he also felt something closing in around him, as if fate was charting the course of his life with invisible ink. He was not only looking for Aiko, his lost sister, but also the key to defeating the Shadow Brotherhood, an organization that had banished peace from his life since that fateful day.
Behind him, Kiko, Ayame, and Yumi maintained a careful formation, their eyes alert, each with their own thoughts. The tense atmosphere affected them all, but none dared to express their unease.
Kiko, though seemingly calm, could not help but remember Tsukiko's warning about the dangers lurking in the mountains. The figure of Tenzen still floated in her mind, his mysterious message and the amulet that Ren now carried. How true were his words? Could she really trust him?
Ayame, silent as always, observed the landscape with sharp eyes, looking for signs that the Brotherhood was near. She felt the darkness emanating from the trees and the ground itself, an energy that was not natural. It was as if the mountain was alive, breathing at its own pace, waiting for the exact moment to attack.
Yumi, for her part, felt anxiety swirling within her. The fact that Ren seemed so distant, absorbed in his thoughts, only deepened the wounds in her heart. She could not help but feel jealous, but also afraid. Afraid that her feelings for him were too late, afraid that they would never be reciprocated.
"Ren..." whispered Yumi, almost without realizing it. "Are you alright?"
Ren turned to her, and for an instant, their eyes met. The coldness that inhabited his gaze seemed to dissipate a little. However, his voice remained firm, almost devoid of emotion.
"I'm fine," he replied, though his tone lacked conviction. "Just... thinking about Aiko. And what awaits us in these mountains."
It was not a lie. His mind was still focused on the image of his sister, kidnapped by the Shadow Brotherhood, and the promise of her rescue. But something inside him also kept him distant from Yumi. The amulet whispered things he could not understand, and the feeling that something big was about to happen haunted him with every step.
Just as unease began to take hold of the group, a thunderous roar cut through the air, reverberating through the mountains. The sound seemed to come from everywhere, a deep and somber roar that chilled everyone's blood.
Ayame tensed her muscles, ready to move. "What was that?"
"Something big..." murmured Kiko, looking towards the horizon where the fog seemed to have thickened even more. "It's not an ordinary animal. It's something else."
Ren gripped the amulet tightly, the silver wolf inside glowing faintly as if reacting to the sound. He felt a dark energy rising, a threat that not only lurked in the future but was right in front of them.
"Watch out!" shouted Ayame, pointing quickly to the side.
From the shadows of the forest, a dark figure emerged, larger than any creature they had ever seen before. It was a Tengu, but not an ordinary one. Its body was covered in a layer of shadows, its face a mixture of man and bird, with red eyes that glowed with fury. In its hands, it held a spear carved from a material that seemed to absorb light itself.
"Ren!" shouted Yumi, a torrent of energy surging from her hands. The roots of the ground rose, but the Tengu cut them with a single movement of its spear. It was not an ordinary being, but someone or something that had been possessed by a dark force.
"This is only the beginning," said the Tengu in a deep voice that echoed like a reverberation in the vast mist. "The Shadow Brotherhood is on the move. Nothing can stop what is to come."
Ren, gritting his teeth, stepped forward. The battle was about to begin. With a war cry, he drew his katana and advanced towards the Tengu, his body moving with agility. Kiko, transforming into her kitsune form, launched a torrent of fire towards the creature, but the Tengu blocked it with a twist of its spear, conjuring a shadow barrier.
Ayame, with her ninja speed, appeared behind the Tengu, attempting to attack it by surprise. But, with surprising agility, the Tengu turned and pushed her back, throwing her against a nearby tree.
"Ren, be careful!" shouted Yumi, summoning a windstorm to destabilize the enemy.
But the Tengu smiled, its face showing palpable malice. "They are too weak. The Shadow Brotherhood controls all this now."
It was then that Ren, feeling a surge of energy coming from the amulet, saw something beyond the fog. A shadow of what looked like a large tower, a fortress built on the Oni Mountains themselves. And inside, a figure that stood out from the shadows: Aiko, captive, but alive.
"The tower..." murmured Ren, his eyes fixed on the vision before him. "Aiko is there! Let's go!"
With the fury of the amulet strengthening him, Ren ran towards the Tengu with determination. Each blow he struck seemed to cut through the fog, pushing away the darkness that surrounded them. The battle against the shadow of the mountain had begun, but the real challenge was yet to come.
