Chapter 2: Contained?
[][]
[Welcome, Administrator].
Staring at the screen ahead of me, I wave my hand through it- the screen shimmering before returning to its solid appearance. The text remains unchanged, yet it extends downwards with new text:
[Welcome, Adminsitrator.]
[ Begin Tutorial?]
[Rewards:
- Full access to System.
- 10 SCP Tokens
- Clandestine Site ]
[Y/N]
I stare at the extended portion of the screen, a cold sweat on my neck.
"This... This is real..."
It sounds foolish stating it out like that, yet it is hard to deny the situation when you wake up in a strange place, a letter explaining what's going on disappears, and then a screen from the popular "system" trope appears right in front of me...
"Yes? Accept?"
I speak aloud, trying to get a reaction from the system. Nothing happens. A common trope is to focus on an action in the system when you try to get it to work... I focus on "Y" in the options available to me.
[Y]
The screen briefly fades away, before shimmering back into existence before me, new text now on the screen:
[Tutorial Accepted. Welcome, Administrator, to your new SCP-System.]
[This system is automated, and does not interact beyond an interface for providing resources and creating 'Quests'. Resources will be based on the "SCP Universe" and purchased with 'SCP Tokens', the currency of the system.]

- Open the Shop!
- Open the Administration Menu! ]

'Sounds easy enough.' I think to myself.
Looking back around the apartment, the couch is seated nicely in the centre of the room, a cheap flatscreen television directly in front of it, with the all-in-one kitchen behind it. Lookint to my left, a short hallway leads to what I presume is the front door, and a small closet for a few clothes and shoes beside it. All of the apartment is illuminated in a light shade of blue from the fluorescent light on the roof, and a window on the wall opposite to the couch and hallway.
Walking to the window and peering outside, skyrises encompass my vision. 'Toronto, maybe?'
I step back from the window, and walk to the door, putting on a pair of shoes in the closet that fit perfectly... Stepping out of the apartment, I make my way to the ground floor using an elevator down the hall. After reaching the ground level, I exit the lobby into a bustling street.
Street-food vendors call out to those nearby as I begin to walk among the crowds. 'Everyone is speaking English, so I guess that's a hint... No accent I can hear. America? Canada, maybe?' I think to myself, as I continue to explore around the apartment complex.
Skyrises are all around me, too large for anything I would recognise back in Canada... Yet one stood out the most. Towering over nearly every other building around it, with an extended portion on the top floor to a helipad, and a smoothed shape. 'Well. That's nice to know. Hopefully not too late though.' I would think to myself, a small sense of dread building up in my chest.
The large word 'Stark' covers the side of the building, is what cements the thought in my head.
"This is New York?!" I accidentally yell out, gathering odd stares of those around me.
A ping gathers my attention, as the system once again appears in front of my vision.
[Congratulations! One of three objectives have been completed! (1/3)]
'Well, that's one part of the tutorial... No rewards, so I guess I need to complete all the objectives for the full reward. Got to remember that for later.' I think to myself, before briefly trying to recall what other objectives I had to complete... Shop and Administration.
'Shop?' I would think to myself. Nothing appears. 'Still not mental... Maybe it's verbal?'
"Shop."
... Nothing happens. 'Alright, then. So it said it's more like an interface, and if I can remember anything about those, they don't really let you skip straight to a function without opening... The menu...'
"System?.... Menu?"
With the verbal command, more like a question, the system reappears before me, a new interface from the original welcome message or tutorial screen.
[ Trial SCP System ]
[ - Administration
- Shop
- Inventory (Locked)
- Stats (Locked) ]
'Alright, that's a step.' I think to myself, as I focus on the Administration button, as it boldens and a new screen appears.
[ Congratulations! Two of three objectives have been completed! (2/3) ]
[SCP System - Administration:]
[ - Facility/Site (Locked)
- Personnel (Locked)
- Containment (Locked)
- Failsafes (Locked) ]
'Alright then, next objective... How do I go back?'
"Back." Nothing happens. 'What's something else... Previous?'
"Previous." The screen fades, and the original screen re-appears. I focus on the next menu that was available and not locked, the shop.
"Shop".
[ Congratulations! Three of three objectives have been completed! (3/3) Rewards will be provided upon exiting the shop menu. ]
[SCP System - Shop:]
- Information (Locked)
- Personal Equipment (Locked)
- Resources (Locked)
- Trading (Locked) ]
I exit out of the shop menu, and only glance around to notice a few odd stares from those around me, a couple even giving me a subtle glare. 'I've been doing this on the sidewalk! No wonder they're staring at me. I must look crazy just saying random words and staring into the air.'
I head back to my apartment, retracing my steps.
"Menu."
[ Tutorial Completed! You now have full access to the SCP System. Locks will be removed the next time you visit the menus. ]
[Rewards:
- Full Access to SCP System
- 10 (SCP Tokens)
- Clandestine (Site) ]

[ SCP System ]
[ - Administration
- Shop
- Inventory
- Stats ]
'Alright, so the trial is gone... No quest menu?... And the Inventory and Stats are unlocked now.' I think to myself, as I browse over the menu screen, noting the slight alterations.
"Administration." I state, opening the administration menu. If the Site reward was anywhere, it would probably be in this sub-menu.
[ SCP System - Administration ]
[ - Facility/Site (New!)
- Personal Equipment
- Resources
- Trading ]
"Facility."
[SCP System - Administration - Facility/Site ]
[ Reward: Clandestine Site - Please select a location:
- New York: Bayswater
- Massachusetts: Provincetown
- Nova Scotia: Lunenburg ]
The options given to me aren't amazing for what I would consider a Clandestine Site, but they should all be reasonably away from populated areas... Looking over the options, I consider their benefits and drawbacks. New York Bayswater is still in New York, and some point in the future will be invaded by the Chitauri... Provincetown in the state everyone can pronounce, but no one can spell, is also a reasonable option, and the population isn't too large.
Looking to the last option, Lunenburg, I considered its benefits greater than that of Provincetown or Bayswater. Lunenburg has a small population, and is confined as part of a small peninsula. Anything in the future that escapes containment wouldn't be too damaging, and the event of a warhead detonation if everything goes wrong could be blamed on Chitauri technology being experimented on... If not, I could explain it through the experimentation on stolen Stark technology.
With that, the decision was made. Lunenburg would be the first of many sites for the Foundation of this universe.
[ Lunenburg has been selected ]

"Now... Where to begin?..."
