Chapter 9: Chapter 9: "Beneath the Surface"
The tension in the room was palpable as the hooded stranger stepped inside, their movements deliberate and unhurried. Kael's hand hovered near his sword, while Lyra watched them with a mix of curiosity and apprehension.
"You seem persistent," Kael said coldly. "But persistence doesn't guarantee trust."
The stranger chuckled softly, pushing back their hood to reveal a young woman with striking green eyes and a cascade of auburn hair. A mischievous smile played on her lips.
"Call me Selene," she said, ignoring Kael's comment. "I don't care about trust. I care about results. And right now, you need me if you want to survive this city."
Lyra hesitated, but something about Selene's confidence and ease made her want to believe her.
"Why do you want to help us?" Lyra asked, her voice cautious.
Selene leaned against the wall, her arms crossed. "Because the relic isn't just important to you—it's important to me, too. Let's just say I have my own reasons for wanting to see it out of Avaren."
Kael's eyes narrowed. "Convenient. And what makes you think we'll let you tag along?"
Selene's smile widened. "Because I know where to start looking. You don't."
Kael opened his mouth to argue, but Lyra cut him off.
"Enough. If she knows something, we need to hear it," Lyra said firmly, surprising even herself with the conviction in her voice.
Kael gave her a sharp look but didn't protest.
Selene tilted her head, clearly amused. "Well, at least one of you has some sense."
---
The trio slipped out of the inn under the cover of darkness, Selene leading the way through the labyrinthine streets. Lyra clutched her cloak tightly, her senses on high alert. Every shadow seemed to shift, every sound amplified in the still night.
"Where are we going?" Lyra whispered.
"To the temple district," Selene replied. "But not the temples themselves. The real secrets are underground."
Kael scoffed. "You mean the catacombs."
"Exactly," Selene said. "The ancients built their temples above a network of tunnels and chambers. That's where the relic is hidden."
"And how do you know this?" Kael asked suspiciously.
Selene smirked. "Because I've been down there before. Trust me, it's not a place you want to wander into without a guide."
---
They reached the temple district just as the moon emerged from behind the clouds, casting a pale glow over the crumbling ruins. The temples were massive, their once-grand facades now weathered and overgrown with vines.
Selene led them to a hidden entrance near the base of the largest temple. She knelt down and began prying at the stonework, revealing a concealed trapdoor.
"Here we are," she said, gesturing to the dark hole beneath.
Kael peered down, his expression skeptical. "Convenient that you know exactly where to look."
Selene rolled her eyes. "Do you always have to question everything? You're wasting time."
Lyra glanced between the two, her unease growing. "Can we just get this over with?"
Selene nodded and slipped into the darkness, followed by Lyra and Kael.
---
The catacombs were cold and damp, the air heavy with the scent of earth and decay. The flickering light from Kael's torch cast eerie shadows on the walls, which were lined with ancient carvings. Lyra shivered, pulling her cloak tighter around herself.
"This place feels… wrong," she said.
"It's just the magic," Selene replied, her tone nonchalant. "The ancients were powerful, but their creations always had a cost."
Kael stopped suddenly, holding up a hand. "Wait."
The group froze, listening intently. A faint sound echoed through the tunnels—a low, guttural growl that sent a chill down Lyra's spine.
"What was that?" she whispered.
"Trouble," Kael muttered, drawing his sword.
Selene frowned. "I told you these catacombs aren't safe. Looks like we've got company."
From the shadows, a pair of glowing eyes appeared, followed by another, and then another. Lyra's breath caught as several wolf-like creatures emerged, their bodies made of shadow and mist.
"Shadowbeasts," Selene said grimly, pulling a pair of daggers from her belt.
Kael stepped forward, his blade gleaming in the torchlight. "Stay behind me, Lyra."
"No," Lyra said, summoning a faint glow of light magic in her hands. "I can help."
Kael gave her a sharp look but didn't argue.
The shadowbeasts lunged, their movements unnaturally fluid. Kael met them head-on, his sword slicing through their forms, while Selene danced around them, her daggers flashing. Lyra focused on channeling her light, sending bursts of energy at the creatures.
The beasts recoiled at the light, their forms flickering, but they didn't retreat. Lyra's heart pounded as one of them lunged at her, its jaws snapping inches from her face. She cried out, releasing a surge of magic that disintegrated the creature.
"Not bad," Selene called, dodging another beast. "But don't get cocky!"
Kael grunted as he drove his sword through the last shadowbeast, which dissolved into a puff of smoke.
The tunnel fell silent, the air heavy with tension.
"Well," Selene said, wiping her daggers on her cloak. "That was fun."
Kael shot her a glare. "Let's move before more show up."
---
As they ventured deeper into the catacombs, Lyra couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. The carvings on the walls seemed to shift in the torchlight, and the oppressive energy of the place grew stronger with every step.
Finally, they reached a massive chamber, its center dominated by a pedestal. On it rested the first relic—a silver amulet that glowed faintly with an otherworldly light.
"There it is," Selene said, her voice hushed.
Lyra stepped forward, her eyes locked on the amulet. But as she reached out to take it, the ground beneath them began to shake.
"Of course," Kael muttered, his sword at the ready.

Sneak Peek for Chapter 10:
The trio faces the chamber's deadly guardian, a massive construct designed to protect the relic at all costs. As Lyra struggles to harness her magic, Selene's true intentions come to light, leaving Lyra and Kael to question if they can trust her at all.
