Shattered Dimensions: The Odyssey of Kaida

Chapter 17: Trials of Ascension

The room was silent except for the low hum of energy emanating from the glowing sigil in the center. Six doors surrounded Kaida, Zara, and the gathering players, each marked with a different symbol: a flame, a wave, a mountain, a spiral, a clock, and an eye. The air was thick with anticipation, and even Zara, who usually had a quip ready, seemed uncharacteristically quiet.

"This feels like a trap," Zara finally muttered, breaking the tension.

"It's always a trap," Kaida replied, her gaze fixed on the doors. "But if the Nexus is really what Lucid and the Echo said, we need to understand it. That means facing these trials."

Axis hovered closer, its voice measured. "Each door represents a trial that will test your strength, intellect, and adaptability. Completing them will reveal fragments of the Nexus's truth. Be warned: failure may have irreversible consequences."

Zara groaned. "Irreversible? Great. Love the stakes here."

Before Kaida could respond, one of the players stepped forward—a tall, armored figure with a deep voice. "We can't do this together. These trials are clearly designed for individuals. Everyone should pick a door and hope for the best."

Murmurs of agreement rippled through the group, though a few players looked hesitant.

Kaida frowned. "Splitting up is dangerous. What if one of us gets stuck or worse?"

"Then they weren't strong enough," the armored figure said bluntly.

Zara bristled. "Wow, what a team player. What's your name? Captain Callous?"

The figure didn't flinch. "Name's Revenant. And I'm not here to make friends—I'm here to survive."

Kaida exchanged a glance with Zara but didn't argue further. Instead, she took a deep breath and stepped toward the door marked with the spiral. Zara followed, her hand resting on the hilt of her weapon.

"Guess we're sticking together," Zara said.

"No," Axis interjected. "Each trial must be completed alone. It's the only way."

Kaida hesitated, then stepped through the spiral-marked door. She was engulfed in light, and when it faded, she found herself standing in a vast, featureless void. In the distance, glowing fragments of light hovered, each one pulsing faintly.

"Welcome, Kaida," a disembodied voice said. "This trial will test your understanding of the Nexus's past and your place within it. Collect the fragments and piece together the truth."

Kaida approached the nearest fragment, and as she touched it, a vivid memory flooded her mind—a laboratory filled with scientists, all speaking in hushed tones. She saw Lucid standing at the center, his face lined with determination.

"The world is crumbling," Lucid said in the memory. "We have one chance to preserve humanity's essence. The Nexus must succeed."

The memory faded, and Kaida stumbled back. "Preserve humanity's essence? What does that mean?"

The voice did not answer. Instead, another fragment appeared, glowing brighter than the last. Kaida moved toward it, bracing herself for what she might see.

Meanwhile, Zara stepped through the door marked with the eye, finding herself in a room lined with mirrors. Each mirror reflected a different version of her—some confident and strong, others broken and defeated.

"Cool. A carnival of insecurities," Zara muttered, drawing her weapon.

A figure emerged from one of the mirrors, identical to Zara but with cold, calculating eyes. "Who are you without your jokes, Zara? Without Kaida? Do you even know?"

"Wow, a doppelgänger with a superiority complex," Zara quipped. "Let me guess—you're here to mess with my head?"

The reflection smirked. "No, I'm here to show you the truth. You think you're a protector, but you're just as lost as everyone else. Without Kaida, you're nothing."

Zara clenched her fists. "I've survived on my own before, and I can do it again."

"Prove it," the reflection said, stepping forward with a weapon identical to Zara's.

As Kaida collected more fragments, the memories grew darker. She saw glimpses of the physical world—cities in ruins, skies choked with ash, and people wandering aimlessly through desolate landscapes.

"This can't be real," Kaida whispered.

The voice responded, its tone somber. "The Nexus was created as a refuge from a world on the brink of collapse. But even here, the corruption of humanity seeped in. That is why the trials exist—to ensure only the worthy can shape the future."

Kaida's heart sank. "And Lucid? What happened to him?"

Another fragment appeared, this one glowing brighter than all the others. When Kaida touched it, she saw Lucid standing before the Heart, his face twisted with desperation.

"I didn't want this," he said, his voice breaking. "I just wanted to save them. But they fought me at every turn. They couldn't see the bigger picture."

Kaida's vision blurred, and she fell to her knees. "Lucid wasn't evil," she murmured. "He was broken."

Back in the mirrored room, Zara was locked in combat with her reflection. Every move she made was mirrored perfectly, leaving her frustrated and exhausted.

"Give up," the reflection taunted. "You can't win against yourself."

"Watch me," Zara growled, a smirk forming on her lips.

She feigned an attack, then dropped to the ground, sweeping her reflection's legs out from under it. As the reflection fell, Zara lunged forward, plunging her weapon into its chest.

The mirrors shattered, and the room dissolved into light. Zara stood alone, breathing heavily.

"Nice try," she muttered, gripping her weapon tightly.

Kaida and Zara emerged from their respective trials at the same time, both looking shaken but determined. Revenant and a few other players had also returned, though some doors remained unopened, their challengers still inside—or lost.

"What did you see?" Zara asked Kaida.

"Pieces of the truth," Kaida replied. "The Nexus isn't just a game or a prison. It's a lifeboat. But something went wrong, and now it's broken."

Before Zara could respond, the ground beneath them trembled. The sigil in the center of the room flared with light, and a shadowy figure emerged.

Lucid.

But this time, he wasn't alone. Behind him, the Heart of the Nexus floated, fractured and unstable.

"Congratulations," Lucid said, his voice dripping with mockery. "You've passed the trials. But the truth you've uncovered is only the beginning. The real challenge lies ahead."

The Heart pulsed violently, sending shockwaves through the room.

"What's happening?" Kaida yelled.

"The Heart is collapsing," Axis said. "If it shatters completely, the Nexus—and everyone within it—will be lost."

Lucid smiled. "Then I suggest you move quickly. The future of humanity depends on it."
