Chapter 6: Awakenings in the Nexus
The obsidian cliffs gave way to a sprawling expanse of crystalline terrain that shimmered under an artificial twilight. The Nexus seemed to hum with an energy Kaida could feel in her bones. It was both unsettling and oddly invigorating.
"So, where's our next death trap?" Kaida asked, trying to mask her unease with sarcasm.
Zara chuckled. "You're catching on, newbie. Axis?"
The AI's voice resonated in their minds. "Proceed to the Nexus Conflux. There, you will face the Trial of Echoes. Success will unlock deeper access to Ethereal Nexus and enhance your abilities. Failure will…"
"Yeah, yeah, we get it," Zara interrupted. "Failure equals doom. Move along."
Kaida shot Zara a look. "Does it ever stop being vague?"
"Nope. You get used to it."
As they approached the Conflux, the terrain began to shift again. The crystalline ground seemed to ripple, reflecting distorted images of Kaida and Zara as they walked. The air grew colder, and an oppressive silence settled over them.
"Creepy," Kaida muttered.
"Welcome to the Nexus," Zara said with a wry smile.
The Conflux revealed itself as a circular platform suspended over a void of swirling energy. Runes etched into the platform glowed faintly, pulsing like a heartbeat.
Kaida hesitated at the edge. "So… what's the trial?"
Axis spoke again. "The Trial of Echoes is designed to test your ability to confront and harness your inner potential. The challenge adapts to each participant, reflecting their greatest fears and hidden strengths."
"Sounds delightful," Zara said dryly.
"Participants must enter individually," Axis continued.
Kaida's stomach dropped. "Wait, we're splitting up?"
"Looks like it," Zara said, stepping onto the platform. She turned to Kaida. "Don't overthink it, newbie. Just focus on surviving."
The moment Kaida stepped onto the platform, the world around her dissolved into darkness. Panic gripped her as she spun in place, searching for any sign of Zara or the Conflux.
"Great. Just great," she muttered.
A faint glow appeared in the distance, drawing her forward. As she walked, the glow intensified, revealing a reflection of herself. But this Kaida was different—her eyes glowed with an eerie light, and her expression was cold, almost inhuman.
"Who are you?" Kaida demanded.
The reflection smiled. "I'm you. Or rather, what you could become if you let go of your fear."
Kaida frowned. "Let go of my fear? You mean stop being scared of this nightmare?"
"No," the reflection said, stepping closer. "Embrace it. Fear is power. The Nexus doesn't reward hesitation."
Before Kaida could respond, the reflection lunged at her, transforming into a shadowy figure. Kaida barely dodged, her Energy Shield activating instinctively.
The figure attacked relentlessly, forcing Kaida to fight back with everything she had. Each strike felt like a blow to her very essence, but with every clash, Kaida began to notice something—her movements were becoming faster, more precise.
A surge of energy coursed through her, and she unleashed a powerful burst from her bracelet, shattering the shadowy figure into fragments.
As the fragments faded, Kaida felt a strange clarity. The fear was still there, but it no longer controlled her.
Meanwhile, Zara stood in a field of wildflowers, an odd contrast to the usual chaos of the Nexus. In the distance, a figure appeared—Elara.
Zara's breath caught. "Elara?"
The figure turned, smiling warmly. "It's me, Zara."
Zara took a hesitant step forward. "This isn't real. You're not real."
Elara's smile faded. "Does it matter? You're here because of me. Because you can't let go."
"I'm not letting go," Zara said firmly. "Not until I find out what happened to you."
Elara tilted her head. "And if it means losing yourself in the process?"
Before Zara could answer, the field shifted into a battlefield, and Elara transformed into a monstrous version of herself, wielding a massive scythe.
"Prove your resolve," the monster-Elara said, charging at Zara.
Zara gritted her teeth, drawing her blade. "I'm sorry, Elara," she whispered before launching into the fight.
When Kaida and Zara emerged from their trials, both looked shaken but determined.
"Well, that was fun," Zara said, her voice tight.
Kaida nodded, still catching her breath. "I think I unlocked… something. I don't know how to describe it."
Zara gave her a faint smile. "Welcome to the Nexus, newbie. The real training starts now."
As they left the Conflux, Kaida couldn't shake the feeling that the Nexus was far more than just a game. It was changing her—whether for better or worse, she wasn't sure.
