She was no different from a beast

Chapter 4

“Yuna! Be careful!!”

“Oh, it’s alright~ This is nothing~”

*Hop!*

I climbed onto Grandpa’s roof, the one with the tractor, and lightly jumped to check if the roof supports were sturdy and if the slope wasn’t too gentle, so the snow wouldn’t pile up.

Yep. As expected of someone so diligent.

There wasn’t anything that needed repairs.

He said he added insulation under the roof last time, so I just needed to cover it with a tarp.

Originally, the community center staff were supposed to do it, but who knows when they’d come, so it’s better to do what I can.

Last year, there were so many houses that needed repairs that by the time the staff arrived, it was already midwinter.

That’s why I remember Grandpa with the supermarket catching a cold and being unable to eat the *hoppang* he sold during the winter.

First, let’s remove the branches and stones on the roof.

“Grandpa~ Go inside and rest~ I’ll let you know when I’m done~”

“Are you really sure? It’s very dangerous!”

“Oh, it’s fine~ Hehe. Trust our village’s Hercules~!”

How many elderly people wouldn’t worry about a 6-year-old fixing their roof?

Grandpa with the supermarket really wasn’t worried.

He just went inside and made pumpkin porridge with Grandma while waiting, so it seems like he’s completely used to me now.

But not all elderly people are like that.

Grandpa with the tractor’s reaction is more typical.

‘Even though he knows I headbutted a 100kg tractor and won.’

What are you supposed to do when the owner of that tractor says that!

He kept looking up with a worried face, but eventually gave in to my stubbornness and went inside.  After confirming that, I threw all the small stones and branches from the roof down.

I need to clear these debris before covering it with the tarp so it lies flat.

And I’ve done this kind of covering before, even in my past life.

Any man who served in the military would have done this at least once.

Covering supplies, vehicles, and facilities.  It’s similar to that.

After clearing the debris, I went back down, tucked the tarp, which was taller than me, under my arm, climbed the ladder, and hopped back onto the roof!

Now~ it’s time to cover it with the tarp~

I went to the edge of the roof and spread the tarp from the edge downwards along the slope so the rain and snow would naturally slide off.

Now, let’s secure it.

Do you all remember how in the military, we used to secure it with pins or nails and a hammer, and then block the gaps with stones or sandbags?

It’s almost the same.

I just need to tie the tarp’s grommets to the sturdy parts of the roof, like the pillars, with rope and tighten it.

Just repeat this process.

But the important thing is to overlap at least 2-3 layers at the seams, right? Otherwise, water will seep through the gaps, making the tarp useless~

It took about two hours? I almost finished covering it with the tarp… but it wouldn’t be satisfying to end it here.

Even if it’s secured with rope, it’s bound to flap in strong winds.

If the tarp flaps, water might seep in through the gaps.

So, what should I do?  Hercules Water Deer, Teacher Han Yuna!

I could put bricks on the edges of the tarp, but you never know.

What if it snows too much or the wind blows strongly and the bricks fall off?

If they hit someone, they’re dead!

Then, wouldn’t sandbags be better? The weight is distributed, so isn’t it safer than bricks?

Ugh! If we had those, I would have used them already!

This isn’t the military.  The community center staff might have them, but the elderly wouldn’t keep useless sand around, would they?

Then there’s only one answer!

“There’s~ more rope! Yes!”

I added more rope to the tarp’s grommets and secured them in an X shape.

That way, the rope presses down on the seams, making it more secure overall!

The downside is that it’s a bit bothersome and a little inconvenient to remove later.

But being inconvenient is better than being dangerous~

Just like that, I finished the roof repair, and since I didn’t want to use the ladder, I jumped down and landed perfectly… roof repair complete!

I put the ladder back in Grandpa’s storage and went inside the warm house. Grandpa with the tractor was taking out kimchi, and Grandma was diligently serving mussel rice.

“Grandpa~ Grandma~ I’m done~!”

“Oh? Already?  No. It finished that quickly? Old man?”

“Don’t be absurd. Even when I was young, it would have taken at least four hours.”

Correct.

It might not seem like much just reading about it, but the time varies greatly depending on the slope and size of the roof, and it’s quite laborious.

Even a skilled young person would take 3-4 hours to cover Grandpa’s roof alone.

If they took breaks, it would take even longer.

But who is Han Yuna! Not only do I have an invincible, blessed TS body, but I also possess the will of a water deer and the heart of a beast!

Overflowing stamina! Monstrous strength! The unstoppable drive of a child! These three elements combined to surpass human limitations and finish the job in just two hours!

“Even I think I did a great job! Come and check it out!”

Grandma and Grandpa, looking skeptical, put on their coats and went outside into the chilly wind…

“Oh my. Goodness gracious.”

“…I think she did a better job than I did in my youth.”

They were busy exclaiming in admiration at the fruits of my labor.

Hehe.  Even I think I did a pretty good job.

A skill that’s hard to believe was done for the first time… no, a skill you wouldn’t even imagine a 6-year-old could accomplish alone!

“If the bricks fall later, it’ll be a big problem! So I tied it with rope again! I’ll remove it all for you when the weather gets warmer!”

“Haha… Hahaha! Thanks to our Hercules, we won’t have to worry this winter! I should give you some allowance.”

“That’s right.  Sigh. She’s much better than our son on the mainland.”

“Oh, it’s nothing~ I did it because I wanted to!”

“Nonsense. I want to give it to you because you’re like our granddaughter.  All I can give you right now is allowance.”

It’s common courtesy to refuse once before accepting allowance.

Wouldn’t it seem too greedy to accept it right away? I need to smile bashfully, appeal to them, and make a good impression to be loved for a long time!

“That’s right. That’s right. It’s been a while since I’ve seen my old man open his wallet.”

Grandpa then took out his wallet and pulled out ten green bills… huh? Ten bills?

“I-Isn’t this too much?”

“It would cost more than this to hire someone. I’d like to give you three times this much… but it’s all in my bank account.  Darn it.”

Giving a child 100,000 won… hmm.  Is this right?

I did a great job covering the roof, but still, is this right?

The allowance I received for repairing the roofs of the supermarket grandpa and the houses of the elderly who look after me was at most 50,000 won.

Honestly, I thought even 50,000 won was excessive, but 100,000 won?

If it were 2024, I might say, ‘What’s 100,000 won? Shouldn’t it be a few hundred thousand won?’ but in 2008, a bowl of *jjajangmyeon* cost 3,000 won… or 2,000 won at cheaper places.

Considering that *jjajangmyeon* costs 7,000-8,000 won these days… it’s a huge amount of money.

“Oh my~ Grandpa must really adore Yuna. Yuna, when adults give you money, you just say ‘Thank you~’ and accept it.”

Hmm, even so, this is… Ah, whatever!

“Hehe. Thank you! Grandpa! Grandma!”

Wow! Allowance! Hehe~ I like it~

What can a 6-year-old do with money right now… but money is important.

I didn’t do it for the money, but as Grandma said, it’s important to gladly accept offered allowance!

I carefully received the allowance Grandpa gave me with both hands and bowed deeply, making him smile broadly.

Yep. That’s right.  If I’m happy, Grandpa’s happy, and Grandma’s happy, then that’s all that matters, right?

“Yes, yes. It’s cold, so let’s go inside quickly. Grandma made delicious mussel rice, so eat some before you go.”

“Wow! Mussel rice! It sounds delicious! Hehe. Give me a lot~!”

“Old woman. Take out the wild garlic pickles and bracken, too.”

Hehe. I already had five meals today while helping out at different houses… but maybe because I’m growing, I have the appetite of a water deer that can eat all day long. I jumped around excitedly.

The crimson autumn leaves fell, and the chilly yet cozy and abundant autumn scenery faded away, replaced by a desolate landscape. But because of that, the warmth of the countryside, where people help each other, laugh, and share, becomes even stronger.

A cold, harsh wind blew, and waves surged on the beach below.

I don’t know how cold and harsh this year’s winter will be… but I bet the hearts of the elderly will be warm like a burning coal briquette.

It’s a quiet and peaceful village… but because there are neighbors.

Because there are friends and family who laugh and chat together.
