Shh, she can hear me

Chapter 98: It's All They're Good For

People have roles, that they're good at, which makes them special. Without these roles, what are we? What is our purpose and what is the point of our existence?

Being by her side was all he was good for. He smiled through the pain even when it stung deep within his core.

Even though he didn't die that day, a part inside him was never going to be the same and it never will. The pain that the hatred gave him was more than enough to break his soul and the kindness that he did do, never seemed like enough.

Even before the curse, he tried to become someone better than what they described him to be, to push through the boundaries of man and monster even when his ancestors failed to do so. He wanted to be better, and he wanted to believe he could be. So, he pushed himself even when he was tired—breaking bones just so others could be happy and see joy when it seemed like it was fading.

All this to try to change how he felt and to have a better ending yet it didn't happen that way. When the curse came, everything changed and his mind felt like it was turning on itself. Whispering words of evil and death, he began developing a HUNGER like no ever, and no matter what he ate it was never enough.

Until he met the witch from then on he knew what he had to do even if it stung like a million eels. This would be worth the pain, the suffering, and all the useful work he did up until this point.

After all, this is what they claimed he was good for.

He looked up at the witch and she gave a sorrowful smile. "What is it?" "Nothing you just, seem neutral." "Neutral?" She questioned as he nodded, "Yeah, neither happy nor sad." She shrugged at the statement, "I don't know, guess I was just thinking. Lost in my head of sorts, partly enjoying your company and grateful and the other part not sure."

"Grateful? Not sure of what?" "Yeah, like I guess I don't know how to answer the second part but I think that whatever happens to us. We couldn't fully hate each other at least not the same hatred the humans had for us."

The wolf was stoic, "Do you truly believe we couldn't hate each other?" "Yes?" "Even if we weren't on good terms or friends? What if the bad memories overlapped the good?" The witch laughed, "Pftt, what's up with the what-ifs? Now, you're just talking. Truly like I said, I'm sorry but I can understand if you would still hate me because of what happened to you. It was devasting, but deep in my heart I know you have some good in you. Even if you don't think so."

She kicked her feet up and put her hands on her knees, "Plus, I wasn't there when you needed me to protect you and I saw an evil spirit in you weep. Guess that's why part of me tried to think it was for the greater good. I mean I wasn't going to let you die but part of me did give up on you. Just for a second."

She fiddled with her curly hair and glanced at the wolf, "Do you understand what I'm saying? Neither of us was in a good place but I'm not going to quit on you so easily. Especially since you've been following, around for a while now. I feel like you're some sort of spirit guide or familiar in a way. Don't think I had a familiar so..."

The wolf raised a brow. "Really?" The witch clenched her teeth. "Yeah." He rolled his eyes. " I can't believe you laughed at my what-ifs, but you never had a familiar before. Aren't you a witch?"

She blushed, "Of course, I am a witch; I'm just a different kind of witch. I'm mostly a healer, but no creature has ever shown interest in me, no one's wanted to help. I've always been by myself, with occasional visitors, but no one has stayed like you. Suppose that's why I'm internally grateful and why I couldn't hate you even if I tried. You are the only one to stay with me truly."

The wolf's anger eased, and something in him felt touched. Even when she speaks without thinking, she has a love for him, a care that he can't ignore. This feeling made him question all that he felt because part of him cared, too, and was grateful to be by herself even if she wasn't the most perfect person.

She was enough, enough for him and enough for...

The wolf clutched at his heart. The feeling he had was changing and molding into something else. The love was becoming greed. It was becoming hunger. His claws became sharper, and the being within started to mess with his head. His vision swirled as the witch no longer looked like herself but something more wicked.

He glanced up at her with bulging brown eyes, changing from its original color and she turned her head. "What's with that look? Are you okay? You almost look as if you're going to-" He slashed at her, blood dripping from her face and her heart shattered.

"You scratched me." Her eyes watered, "You actually-" she backed up as the wolf changed to a deep auburn. Fire in his eyes as he grew closer to her, "I am not who you think I am." She started to shake, "T-then who are you?"

The wolf launched at her and this time she barely dodged, her adrenaline quickly rising. "W-what the fuck is wrong with you?" "I'm hungry and tired of waiting for you to snap." "Snap?" "So I'll make you!" He went for her arm, digging at the flesh and she screamed. Hit the side of his eye and he didn't flinch until he took a piece of her, chewing it like fresh game. "This is not enough." He muttered with a laugh, sounding completely different from the Leo she knew.

"S-stay back." "Or what? I already slashed you twice and took a bite of your flesh. You might as well accept your fate. Just as Leo did, just as they all did."
