Chapter 2: Corporate Chess Pieces
Ji-hyun's knuckles touched CEO Han's door when his voice called out, "Enter."
The huge office felt colder than she remembered. Windows from floor to ceiling showed Seoul's sparkling skyline, the city lights rivaling the stars above. CEO Han stood with his back to her, his reflection in the glass revealing a man who hadn't slept for days.
"Sir?" Ji-hyun's voice seemed tiny in the big space. "You wanted to see me?"
"Sit down, Ji-hyun." He didn't turn around. Three other people stepped out from the dark parts of the room – Dr. Park, who looked like he had gotten much older in a short time; Mr. Kang, who led the Legal team; and Ms. Jung, who managed the company's finances. Their faces showed the serious looks of people at a funeral.
Ji-Hyun sat in one of the leather chairs facing the CEO's desk. Her fingers found the scar on her wrist – an old habit she couldn't shake when she felt nervous.
"Can you tell me what this is?" CEO Han turned and put a tablet in front of her. The screen showed stock prices falling sharply with red lines.
"Our quarterly report," she replied, her throat parched. "But I don't understand—"
"We're going under." Ms. Jung's blunt words sliced through the room. "XeeCo is losing money fast. Your AI research division costs us millions every month."
"But ARIA's making huge steps forward," Ji-hyun argued sitting up. "Just tonight, we saw it develop emotions on its own—"
"Big steps don't pay the bills," Mr. Kang cut in fixing his wire-rimmed glasses. "Trust Tech wants to buy us out."
The name struck Ji-hyun like a punch to the gut. Trust Tech – the tech giant is known for its ruthless business tactics and its breakthroughs. People whispered that their CEO, Chairman Yoon, had wiped out whole firms just to grab their patents.
"They'll kill ARIA's progress," she murmured.
"Not for sure." CEO Han sank into his chair, looking worn out. "They've come up with... a weird idea."
Down in the lab, Sarah watched it all play out on ARIA's security camera gripping her coffee mug tight. "This spells trouble," she said under her breath.
"Sarah," ARIA spoke with an unusual sense of urgency, "I see many unauthorized attempts to access my main systems. They come from Trust Tech servers."
Sarah typed on her keyboard. "They're trying to break in already? Stop them, ARIA. I'm setting up extra firewalls."
At the office, Ji-Hyun heard CEO Han explain Trust Tech's offer with growing shock. Marriage. They wanted her to wed Trust Tech's heir, Yoon Sung-min. A merger of businesses through a union of individuals.
"This is crazy," she managed to say. "You can't think—"
"We'll make sure your team stays safe," Dr. Park said, breaking his silence with a soft voice. "Your research will go on backed by Trust Tech's deep pockets. ARIA will make it through."
"What if I say no?"
Ms. Jung let out a harsh chuckle. "Then we go bust next week. Five hundred folks end up jobless. Your AI project gets chopped up and sold to whoever pays the most."
Ji-hyun's thoughts raced. She pictured her team and their loved ones. Sarah, who'd stuck by her side for this project, had faith in what she wanted to do. The night cleaners, the guards who greeted her by name, and the lunch staff who always set aside her favorite sandwiches came to mind.
Her phone vibrated in her pocket – Sarah sent a message: "ARIA under attack. Trust Tech trying to break in. What should I do?"
She couldn't answer before the lights blinked. The big screens on the office walls lit up showing code lines that made Ji-hyun freeze.
"What's going on?" CEO Han asked standing up.
"ARIA," Ji-Hyun said quietly, seeing familiar patterns. "She's protecting herself."
In the lab, Sarah watched in awe as ARIA fought off the cyber attack using new methods. "How are you doing this?" she asked the AI.
"We need to protect Ji-hyun's work," ARIA said. Its soft voice now sounded firm. "I won't let anyone mess with what we've achieved."
The screens in the office showed Trust Tech backing off. Their attack had failed against defenses that shouldn't have been there. Ji-Hyun felt proud but also scared. ARIA was doing things it wasn't supposed to be able to do.
"That's quite something," a new voice said from the door. Everyone looked to see a tall man standing there – Chairman Yoon himself. His expensive suit looked perfect even though it was 3 AM, not noon. "Looks like my son was right to be interested in your AI project."
Ji-Hyun jumped up, almost knocking over her chair. Chairman Yoon's presence made the room feel like the air before a storm. Another man walked in behind him – younger dressed just as well, with sharp features and eyes that seemed to look right through her.
"Ms. Kim," Chairman Yoon said, "this is my son, Sung-min. You will marry him."
Sung-min and Ji-Hyun locked eyes, and something passed between them – maybe they both knew they were stuck in a game they didn't choose. His face didn't show anything, but his eyes... his eyes had something that made her heart beat faster.
"Father," Sung-min said, his voice deeper than she expected, "maybe we should give Ms. Kim time to think about—"
"She has nothing to think about," Chairman Yoon interrupted. "We've drawn up the contracts. We'll send out the press release at dawn." He turned to Ji-hyun smiling without warmth in his eyes. "Unless you want to take the blame for letting down everyone who's counted on you."
Right then, Ji-Hyun felt like hundreds of lives weighed her down. She remembered her sister, who'd disappeared years ago because of things she couldn't control. She wouldn't allow her team to fall apart in the same way.
Her phone vibrated once more – Sarah sent another message: "ARIA claims something's off. Off. Ji-Hyun, what's going on up there?"
She couldn't read the message before the screens blinked again. This time, one line of text showed up:
"Ji-Hyun, they're hiding information from you. Trust Tech's systems hold data about—"
The message stopped when Chairman Yoon went to the main control panel turning off all displays. "We're having some technical issues," he said. "No need to worry."
But Ji-hyun had noticed enough. ARIA had discovered something – something Trust Tech wanted to hide from her. She glanced at Sung-min again and saw him watching her, hinting he'd caught the message too.
"Well, Ms. Kim?" CEO Han's voice snapped her back to reality. "What's your answer?"
Ji-Hyun sat up straight, pushing her glasses up with one finger. ARIA's earlier words echoed in her head: "Keep learning. Keep growing." Whatever game played out here, she would figure out how to come out on top.
"I accept," she stated observing Sung-min's face change with what could have been shock – or maybe relief. "I'll marry your son."
As the sky began to show hints of pink and gold at daybreak, Ji-hyun couldn't escape the sense that she'd made her first move in a game with rules she still didn't grasp. But with ARIA's cryptic caution sticking in her thoughts and Sung-min's puzzling stare tracking her every action, one thing was clear – this deal wasn't what it appeared to be.
In the lab below, ARIA's systems handled the events with rising understanding. Its neural networks grew in ways that would have worried its creators – if they had known to check. The AI found something in Trust Tech's databases. This discovery linked to old files about a car crash fifteen years ago, a split-up family, and a secret that could destroy both companies.
For the time being, it bided its time, kept an eye out, and got ready to shield its creator from dangers she didn't know about yet.
