Skyrim System In Westeros

Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Three Years

Three years later, in the 287th year after the Conquest, Wright and Gunthor traveled by carriage to Highgarden to attend the tournament hosted by House Tyrell. Of course, they weren't there to compete but to discuss matters with Renly.

Since Highgarden lay between Storm's End and Oldtown, Wright and Renly had been handling day-to-day affairs via ravens. For more significant matters, they often met at Highgarden. This was also a way of strengthening ties with House Tyrell, something that Robert hoped to see. Many families in the Reach still privately supported House Targaryen, and stabilizing the South, including the Reach and Dorne, was a task mostly entrusted to Wright and Renly.

Over the past three years, Wright first studied ravenry. Ravens were a low-level magical beast, and with his innate magical power, he was able to master the subject quickly. After crafting a black iron ring to represent his study of ravenry, he considered that discipline completed. He then began exchanging letters with his three brothers.

Robert and Cersei had a golden-haired prince named Joffrey in 286, living a blissful life.

Stannis remained unmarried, though it was unclear whether he had any mistresses. His letters were brief, mostly asking for ways to increase the betting income from the tourney. It seemed his ambitions lay in becoming a betting magnate.

Renly mentioned that Robert had sent a bastard daughter named Mya Stone to Storm's End for him to raise. Wright found this quite surprising, as Mya was already a few years old.

Wright also wrote frequent letters to Nymeria, expressing his longing. She was still his betrothed, and considering Dorne's more open customs, he feared that if he wasn't careful, he might lose her to another. In modern times, there were many stories of people falling for others online without ever meeting, sending money, only to discover later that the person was much older than expected. Wright wanted to avoid such a fate, focusing on building a strong relationship with Nymeria to minimize the risk of being betrayed.

Nymeria's younger sister, Tyene, had taken up the role of Nymeria's personal knight and was also learning the art of poison-making from their father, Prince Martell. Tyene even joked that if Wright ever wronged Nymeria, she would poison him. Wright, amused, thought the young girl still had much to learn.

They also heard that Oberyn had gone to the East as a mercenary and hadn't been seen in a long time. Whether this was true or not, Wright thought, it seemed difficult to imagine the Red Viper staying in one place for long.

The second subject Wright mastered was the red copper ring: medicine. Using knowledge from the modern world, he amazed the scholars of the Citadel. Techniques like using alcohol for sterilization, suturing with catgut, blood type testing, and disease isolation began to take root. By the end of the year, maesters across the Seven Kingdoms started keeping alcohol and surgical supplies in stock, greatly reducing the mortality rate among the injured.

The third was the golden ring: economics. The world's economic system was quite simple, and Wright model for the tournament's economic structure fascinated the maesters. Teaching others how to make money was no easy feat.

The fourth was the white steel ring: metallurgy. With the bonus from his system's forging skill, Wright improved his ability, crafting the white steel ring while significantly boosting his skills.

He had also created a treadle-operated leather wheel mechanism, similar to a modern sewing machine but less precise. This could be used for jewelry making. The Citadel and Storm's End produced a small quantity, though the demand was still low.

The fifth ring crafted was the bronze ring: astronomy. Wright had studied mechanical engineering in the modern world. He introduced the 24-hour timekeeping system and time measurement methods, then combined this with his knowledge of mechanics to design a large 24-hour clock. The timekeeping method in Westeros was still primitive. Apart from the maesters who could measure large seasonal changes, people still lived by the daily cycle of sunrise and sunset.

Wright generously donated his design blueprints to the Citadel. They immediately set the Citadel's location as the standard meridian time and used their connections to get local lords to fund the construction of clock towers in their cities. A maester from the Citadel was assigned to each tower to perform daily time calculations and synchronize the clocks.

Soon, clock towers were built in the capitals of all the regions, and the idea began to spread to other cities. The Citadel profited from the construction and operation of the towers, leading to a high level of enthusiasm among them. Apprentices studying architecture, metallurgy, and astronomy frequently brought Wright meat as a token of gratitude.

However, the large clocks were the most basic mechanical structures, otherwise Wright would not have sent the drawings to the Citadel. His real plan to profit was by creating Watch's that could be placed in homes.

These devices would eventually require a quartz calibration system, but since this wasn't yet available, it was more feasible to first spread clock towers and grandfather clocks across the land. It would take many years for Wright to make Watch's on his own, but the Citadel had the resources to make it happen faster.

The main purpose of their trip to Highgarden was to sell the first batch of grandfather clocks produced in Storm's End to House Tyrell. This was Wright and Renly's business venture.

Wright and Renly had come to realize the high costs of practicing magic. Wright advanced magic and Renly's intermediate magic were no longer simple tasks of reading books; they required practical equipment to properly channel magical energy. To craft such equipment, it needed to be made from Valyrian steel.

While Wright forging skills couldn't yet produce Valyrian steel, he could still reforge it. Magic-supporting equipment wasn't considered magical items but rather devices that facilitated the flow of magic, similar to modern-day physics and chemistry apparatus.

According to his research, during the later years of the Valyrian dynasty, it was estimated that thousands of Valyrian steel weapons, such as swords and daggers, were produced. Of those, 227 were known to be in Westeros, and the rest had either been destroyed or repurposed into items like forks, knives, and jewelry.

Renly began to send people to search the continent for any broken pieces of Valyrian steel. These were collected and sent to the Citadel for Wright to reforge into magic-supporting equipment. Wright would write his observations after testing the items and then send them back to Storm's End for Renly. It wasn't until one day, when the household staff mentioned that the monthly stipend had run out, that Wright and Renly realized they needed to start finding ways to make money.

Highgarden, the capital of the Reach, was surrounded by the most beautiful scenery. The white castle was nestled among fields and flowers, with many golden roses. The walls were built in a three-layer concentric circle structure.

Inside the first and second layers, there were various homes and meticulously designed plant mazes. Without a guide, it would be impossible to find the gates. Many fortresses in this era used such maze structures to complicate siege attempts.

As they ventured deeper, they entered a massive garden. Courtyards, painted walls, artificial waterfalls, and marble corridors and sculptures could be found, truly making it the most beautiful castle in all the Seven Kingdoms. In comparison, Storm's End, the Baratheon stronghold, felt like a large prison.

However, House Tyrell's rise to power was not without its problems. Many of their vassals were dissatisfied with them.

Around 300 years ago, during the Conquest, King Aegon burned the ruling family of the Reach. House Tyrell, then the steward, opened the gates and surrendered. Aegon appointed their steward as the Lord of Highgarden and the protector of the Reach. This caused much discontent among the other noble families, who questioned why a mere steward should hold such a title. But due to Aegon's overwhelming power, they couldn't openly oppose it. Since then, House Tyrell had relied on strategic marriages and the distribution of favors to solidify their power.

Garlan Tyrell was waiting at the door of the hall. The once chubby boy had slimmed down a bit, and his brother had given him a nickname: "Garlan the gallant."

"Ser Wright, Uncle Gunthor," Garlan greeted them both.

After eating some pieces of bread and salt from a nearby servant's plate, Wright asked, "You've gotten stronger, Garlan. How much does your training sword weigh now?"

Wright was now strong enough to rival any adult, and every time he visited Highgarden, he would easily knock Garlan to the ground. Garlan was quite respectful of him.

"I can now wield a 5-pound sword for a whole morning's training."

"Where are Lord Mace and the Old Lady?" Though they were family, proper etiquette required a guest to visit the host first. Gunthor looked around the hall, noticing a large group of Reach nobles gathered in a corner but not seeing the two. He asked Garlan.

"Father and Grandmother are in the hall. Renly's also already here. Grandmother sent me to bring you to them," Garlan said as he led them through the crowd.

After squeezing through the crowd and reaching the inner circle, they saw a standing clock about one and a half meters tall, placed against the wall. Next to it stood the finely dressed Renly, who was introducing its features to Mace and Olenna. "This entire clock is made of high-quality sandalwood, with a 12-inch diameter silver dial. Each number on the dial is inlaid with pearls, truly magnificent."

Renly then opened the side of the clock, revealing a mechanical structure that, for the time, was extraordinarily sophisticated.

"The real masterpiece is inside, designed and crafted entirely by Wright. It can run continuously for twenty days with an error of no more than one second."

At every detail Renly mentioned, the nearby nobles gasped in admiration.

When Olenna and Mace saw Wright and Gunthor approaching, they merely gave them a brief greeting. "We'll speak later in the study," they said, clearly still absorbed by the clock.
