Skyrim System In Westeros

Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Before the Final Battle

Barristan and Stannis launched their attack on Old Wyk. Wright, along with several other ships tasked with delivering important prisoners and messages, set sail to rendezvous with Robert. By the time they joined him, Robert had already taken Great Wyk and was preparing to assault Pyke.

Pyke was home to both Pyke Castle and Lordsport. Lordsport, though it had a grand name, was mostly made of wood with only a few buildings constructed from stone. It was the residence of House Botley and the nearest major port to Pyke Castle, the seat of House Greyjoy. Capturing the rebellious King would mark the end of the rebellion. Even if Balon Greyjoy fled, his forces would have lost their spirit, and there would be no chance to regroup.

Wright's ship docked alongside Robert's flagship. After boarding, he found Robert in a heated discussion with nobles and commanders about their attack plans. Despite the impressive name, Lordsport was a modest place, with the majority of its structures made of wood, including House Botley's keep. The preparations for this attack included a large amount of fire-starting supplies.

Upon seeing Wright, Robert inquired, "We're planning to use fire in this attack. I heard you burned over two hundred of Balon's ships at the Battle of Fair Isle. Is your magic restored?"

"Not fully restored yet. I can only manage self-defense at this point," Wright responded, noticing the noblemen and generals nearby. Even if his magic had recovered most of its strength, he had no intention of revealing that. At this point, he could easily burn Lordsport to the ground, but these men had come here to make a name for themselves. If Wright took all the credit, it would only breed resentment. Robert, no doubt, was getting carried away with his own ambitions. He sought to be invincible, not to make enemies of everyone, but his brother wouldn't mind to not make a mess.

Robert didn't overthink it and addressed the nobles and commanders. "Then we'll proceed with our original plan. The warships will directly attack the port to hold off the enemy forces, and the landing troops will attack from the land once they make landfall. Wright, you'll join the landing troops."

Wright accepted the command, thinking to himself: This time, I'll hold back and let the others do the work. When we reach Pyke Castle, I'll make my move. Hopefully, I can take down a few members of House Greyjoy, preventing Robert from claiming all the glory.

Robert wasn't skilled in naval warfare, so his focus was on the landing, as most of the men from the North were also inexperienced at sea, with many unable to even swim. As a result, they were all heavily armored.

Wright had Renly assigned to protect Robert personally, while he himself boarded the landing force's ship. The battle soon began, with the naval forces holding the enemy back at the port. The landing troops were able to land without much difficulty. Wright, along with his guards, hurried through the ranks but didn't recognize anyone familiar. He simply followed the main force toward the port.

Since Wright intended to take a backseat in this attack, he found himself moving slower and slower, gradually falling to the rear of the army. Soldiers, seeing him dressed in noble robes with a sword but without armor and accompanied by guards, assumed he was just a noble seeking to take credit for the battle. They shot him disdainful looks as they passed.

Wright paid them no mind, continuing at a leisurely pace. It wasn't until the entire port was engulfed in flames that he finally entered the city.

Though his magic was powerful, it was no match for the tactics of large numbers. Using the bodies of fallen allies as shields to charge forward was all too effective. Once the fighting got close, he would be vulnerable to being cut down by a flurry of blades.

The attack went smoothly, mainly because the enemy's defenses were too weak. Once the Iron Islands fleet was destroyed, the land defenses consisted only of a few fortresses; everything else was made of wood, which might have been enough to defend against pirates but couldn't withstand a proper army's assault.

The battle ended quickly. All members of house Botley of Lordsport was captured, and the port itself was practically ruined. The soldiers began dismantling the buildings to use the timber for constructing siege weapons.

The logistics team also landed, sending out several squads of scouts to monitor Pyke Castle. The rest of the soldiers started setting up camp, lighting fires to cook, and it would take another two or three days to finish building the siege equipment.

Wright made his way to Robert's tent, where he found Robert, along with Eddard Stark and other northern commanders, drinking. Many of them were old friends of Robert's from the rebellion years ago, and some hadn't seen each other for several years. They were all catching up and chatting happily now that they had gathered together on the same side.

Wright greeted the familiar faces, poured himself some wine, and found a place to sit down. Robert spoke up and introduced him to the group:

"This is my fourth brother, Wright Baratheon. Some of you may not have met him, and some of you might have seen him as a child a few years ago. Now he's grown and ready to join the battlefield."

The looks he received were mixed. Eddard Stark, being an old friend, looked at him with a familiar gaze, while others, likely having heard the rumors, viewed him with disdain. Wright, a young noble, was seen as nothing more than someone who wandered the rear lines of the battle. The Northerners weren't ones for pretense, and had Robert not been present, there was likely some mockery that would have been voiced.

Wright had anticipated this reaction and quickly offered an explanation.

"I've been storing up magic for the upcoming siege of Pyke Castle. I'll use my magic to destroy the city walls. Robert, you can order the halt of the siege equipment construction. We can march at dawn tomorrow."

Robert, skeptical, responded, "I've seen your magic before at the Red Keep—fire, frost, lightning. I'm sure no one would survive if it hit them. But when it hit the walls of the Red Keep, it didn't seem to do much, did it?"

Robert expressed his doubts, sharing his understanding of Wright's magic, while also wanting him to clarify things for the group. After all, this was a major military matter. While he trusted his brother, abandoning the construction of siege weapons and marching to the city without them could affect morale if things went wrong.

"Brother, you've forgotten—I can do more than just fire, frost, and lightning."

With that, Wright cast a spell, and a glowing orb shot from his hand, circling his body as it rotated.

For everyone in the tent, except Robert, it was their first time witnessing real magic. The previous time Robert had been on Great Wyk, Wright had not had the chance to demonstrate his abilities with the guard around, and Renly hadn't been able to observe. The others gathered around, intrigued by the display.

"Alright, issue the order to halt the construction of siege equipment. At dawn tomorrow, we will gather the entire army and march on Pyke Castle."

With the king's official command given, the others knew it was time to get back to work. No one else stayed to drink, and soon the only ones left were the Baratheon brothers.

Robert, curious, asked, "You've been researching magic all these years, and new forms of magic keep appearing. But tomorrow, what magic are you planning to use to destroy the city walls?"

Wright replied, "It should be one of the most difficult types of magic—High Valyrian magic."

"High Valyrian?" Robert's attention sharpened upon hearing the mention of Valyria.

Wright understood his concern and reassured him, "High Valyrian is completely different from ordinary Valyrian, and to use magic is an even higher stage. I believe the Targaryens lost their magic when they were on the Eastern continent. It became nothing more than a language. By the time of Prince Rhaegar, even the High Valyrian language had been lost, and they could only use the common Valyrian, which is widely spoken on the Eastern continent."

Only then did Robert feel relieved. "I actually dreamt of the Targaryen heirs reclaiming King's Landing."

Wright, a bit amused, responded, "As far as magic goes, I'm probably the most qualified to speak on it. I taught the full High Valyrian magic and incantations to Renly, and even he couldn't use them. So, there's no need to worry, brother."

Robert turned to Renly, who confirmed, "It's very complex. I've been studying it for half a year with no progress. It feels like a completely different magic system."

Wright thought to himself: That's to be expected. High Valyrian magic is essentially Dragon's Roar; without a dragon soul, it's impossible to use.

"By the way, brother, you could have your spymaster keep an eye out for magical events across the continent, including people and items. If they can't figure something out, they can pass it on to me."

Robert took a sip of wine and raised an eyebrow. "What are you suggesting?"

"There are too few magicians," Wright lamented. "The revival of magic is irreversible. In the future, there will be more and more people with magical abilities. The Green Seers, Skinchangers, the Faceless Men from the Eastern continent, the Lords of Light, and other hidden factions will all make their moves. They'll each recruit potential seeds for their own factions. Magic is a treasure, and with only Renly and me, even if we spent our whole lives on it, we wouldn't see the end. So, if we come across suitable candidates, I'll take them as apprentices. Renly can already teach healing magic, and in a few years, he'll be able to take on apprentices too."

Wright looked at Robert seriously.

"Of course, before taking an apprentice, we still need to check their background. I don't care about their origin—whether they're commoners, nobles, or even slaves, I'll accept them as my disciples. But if they're enemies, brother, it's better to deal with them first."

Robert understood, "The Baratheon family might not have dragons, but we have magicians." He realized that dealing with potential enemy magicians in advance was wise. Any magicians trained by the Baratheons would be crucial for the kingdom's legacy.
