Chapter 4: 03Meet Kenichi Uesugi: The Unexpected Newcomer Who’s Winning Everyone O
Kenichi Uesugi didn't expect Taoka Moichi to arrange a game for the newcomers on the first day. He remembered that in the plot,
it seemed that newcomers could join the team directly at Shohoku. Now, it seemed that Taoka Moichi's requirements were more stringent.
This was no wonder. After all, Shohoku was a public school, and the treatment was poor.
The Shohoku Basketball Team had not performed well over the years. Last year, it was swept by Ryonan. For Akagi, it was good enough that someone joined the basketball team. He didn't have the right to be picky.
Just when Kenichi Uesugi tied his shoelaces and prepared to go on the court, a voice suddenly sounded behind him.
"My classmate, our team is relying on you!"
Kenichi Uesugi looked back and saw a man whose head was only as high as his chest, looking at him seriously. Kenichi Uesugi was also very familiar with his face.
Isn't this Aida Hikoichi? The younger brother of the famous basketball reporter Aida Yayoi. I almost forgot that he is also a first-year student at Ryonan. It seems that he's on the same team as me.
Looking at Aida Hikoichi, who looked serious, Kenichi Uesugi smiled and said, "Don't worry! With me here, we will definitely win!"
"That's good! Let's cheer together! We must keep both of us here!" Aida Hikoichi responded.
In fact, in this selection, Coach Taoka mainly looked at whether the individual abilities of the players were suitable for the high school league, not which team could win. It was just that Aida Hikoichi was someone who took the game very seriously. He believed that as long as it was a game, he should try his best to win it.
However, his physical condition was too poor. He was only 165 cm tall and had no confidence in winning the match by his own strength. So, he set his sights on the tall Kenichi Uesugi. Maybe he could do it!
As the players on both sides stepped onto the court, the match was about to begin. Kenichi Uesugi, Aida Hikoichi,
and three other newcomers they didn't know were assigned to the red team. The two players recruited from other counties by Taoka Moichi were assigned to the blue team.
After some discussion among the red team members, Kenichi Uesugi,
who was the tallest, was arranged as the center. Although Kenichi Uesugi didn't like this position very much, he was too lazy to refute them. After all, these guys didn't have anyone over 180 cm tall. It was really too difficult for them to compete with the opponent for the ball.
Kenichi Uesugi went straight to the center circle.
The person standing opposite him was a man named Masao Masa. He was one of the individuals Taoka Moichi had recruited from other counties. As a player invited by the coach to join the team, Masao Masa was not very satisfied with Taoka Moichi's request for
them to participate in this rookie-level competition. After all, he was a core player on his junior high school team.
The people on the opposite side, from what he had just seen in the coach's information, seemed to not have a single player who had been a main player in junior high school.
The guy standing opposite him, named Kenichi Uesugi, was even more outrageous. He hadn't even started playing basketball until the second year of junior high school.
No wonder Coach Taoka shook his head after merely looking at his information.
How could such a person with no competitive experience be his opponent?
Basketball games depended on skill. Being tall was useless. In his opinion, this big guy who had played basketball for less than two years could not possibly be his opponent. He had even thought about how he would play tricks on Kenichi Uesugi later.
After seeing the smug look on Masao's face, Kenichi Uesugi roughly knew what he was thinking. He would certainly not take an inexperienced newcomer like him seriously. However, he was afraid that he would disappoint him.
Outside the court, the veteran players of Ryonan also discussed the game with great interest. After all, some of these individuals would join the basketball team and compete with them in this year's county competition. They eagerly hoped that another player like Sendoh would emerge among the newcomers this year, although such a situation was not very realistic.
"What do you think of the abilities of these guys?"
"I think the guy named Kenichi Uesugi is impressive. He is about the same height as Sendoh and seems very promising!"
"That's not necessarily true. I believe the players the two coaches recruited should be quite good. The coaches' judgment should not be wrong!"
These veteran players did not see the information on these newcomers as Masao had, and still held hope for them. Only Yuzumi, who was beside Taoka Moichi, noticed that the coach's brows were furrowed, indicating he was not very pleased. Looking at these newcomers on the field, Yuzumi also understood the reason for the coach's dissatisfaction. It must be that the newcomers of this class did not meet his expectations.
It seemed this year's Ryonan still had to rely on him and Sendoh.
When he thought of this, Yuzumi suddenly felt the pressure on his shoulders was much greater.
On the court, both sides were ready. With Koshino Hiroaki, who was temporarily acting as the referee, blowing the whistle to start the game, the competition among all new players officially began.
"Ah!" Masao shouted and jumped high to get the ball for the blue team. But just as he was slowly preparing to grab the basketball, a big hand suddenly appeared in front of him and struck the basketball first.
After landing, Masao looked at Kenichi Uesugi in front of him with a surprised expression. He did not expect to lose the jump ball to this inconspicuous newcomer. Although he was slightly shorter than him, Kenichi's jumping ability was impressive. In junior high school, his coach often praised his outstanding leaping skills. Even the current coach, Taoka, chose to bring him onto the team because of this advantage.
Ryonan, but he actually lost to the guy in front of him in the jump ball just now, and he didn't just lose a little—he was almost outperformed by him. Just now, Kenichi Uesugi jumped a whole head higher.
"I was careless. It must be my carelessness," Masao muttered to himself. "It should be that I didn't jump as hard as I could just now. Yes, it must be like that. Otherwise, I would definitely not lose to him!"
Still looking for excuses for his performance, Masao didn't realize the gap between the two.
Outside the court, seeing Kenichi Uesugi easily win the jump ball, Yuzumi, who stood next to Taoka Moichi, looked at Kenichi running on the court and said softly, "This guy named Kenichi Uesugi seems to be pretty good!
