Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Midnight Encounter
Ryan stood frozen in place, the cryptic message from the cloaked figure echoing in his mind. The guild hall's lively atmosphere returned quickly, as if the mysterious stranger had never appeared. Max gave him a curious glance but didn't comment, and Mia simply shrugged as she moved toward the quest board.
"Midnight outside the village gate?" Ryan murmured under his breath. He couldn't shake the feeling that this encounter could change everything, though whether for better or worse, he wasn't sure.
The hours until midnight felt like an eternity. Ryan spent some time wandering Briarwood Village, acquainting himself with the shops and stalls. He managed to trade some of his loot for a sturdier pair of boots and a few extra health potions. As the sun set, casting long shadows over the cobblestone streets, Ryan found himself drawn back to the Adventurer's Guild.
Mia was still there, poring over the quest board. She glanced at him as he entered, her eyes narrowing slightly. "You look distracted," she said. "Something on your mind?"
Ryan hesitated. Should he tell her about the stranger's message? He decided against it, not wanting to involve her in something he didn't fully understand. "Just tired," he said instead. "Long day."
She didn't look convinced but let it drop. "Get some rest. You'll need it if you're planning to keep up with the guild."
Ryan nodded and made his way to the inn. The small room he rented was modest but clean, with a single bed and a small window overlooking the village square. He tried to sleep, but his thoughts kept returning to the stranger. Finally, as the clock in his interface ticked closer to midnight, he got up, equipped his gear, and slipped out into the night.
The village was eerily quiet at this hour, the only sounds coming from the faint rustling of leaves and the occasional hoot of an owl. Ryan made his way to the gate, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. The shadows seemed to stretch unnaturally long under the moonlight, and he couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched.
When he reached the gate, the cloaked figure was already there, leaning casually against the wooden frame. They straightened as Ryan approached, their hood obscuring most of their face but not the faint smirk on their lips.
"You showed up," they said, their tone laced with approval. "Good. I was starting to think you didn't have the guts."
"Who are you?" Ryan demanded, his grip tightening on his sword. "And what do you want from me?"
The figure chuckled. "Straight to the point. I like that. You can call me Shadowfang."
Ryan stiffened at the name. Shadowfang was infamous in Soulbound Odyssey—a rogue player-killer who had terrorized countless adventurers. His exploits were the stuff of both fear and grudging admiration.
"You're a long way from your usual hunting grounds," Ryan said warily.
Shadowfang tilted his head. "True. But I'm not here to hunt. Not tonight, anyway. I've been watching you, Ryan. You're... different. And I think you might be worth my time."
"Why?"
Shadowfang stepped closer, and Ryan fought the urge to draw his sword. "Because this world isn't what it seems," he said, his voice low and serious. "The system is broken, and the rules you think you know? They're just the surface."
Ryan frowned. "What are you talking about?"
"You've seen the glitches," Shadowfang continued. "The anomalies that don't fit the game's design. Those aren't accidents. They're clues. Signs that this world is hiding something much bigger."
Ryan shook his head. "And you expect me to believe you?"
Shadowfang shrugged. "Believe what you want. But if you're interested in surviving—and I mean really surviving—you'll need to learn how to play outside the system's rules."
"And you're going to teach me?"
"If you're willing to take the risk," Shadowfang said. "Meet me at the abandoned watchtower in the Dark Forest tomorrow night. Midnight. Bring your wits, because if you don't impress me, you won't get another chance."
Before Ryan could respond, Shadowfang stepped back into the shadows and vanished, leaving behind only a faint swirl of dark particles.
Ryan stared at the spot where he had stood, his mind racing. The Dark Forest was dangerous enough in the daytime, let alone at night. But the promise of answers—and the chance to understand the game's secrets—was too tempting to ignore.
As he turned to head back to the village, his interface chimed with a new notification:
Quest Unlocked: The Rogue's Offer Objective: Meet Shadowfang at the abandoned watchtower. Reward: Unknown.
Ryan exhaled slowly. He had a feeling this was only the beginning of something far bigger than he had anticipated.
