Chapter 12: 12: Ark Maxim
The first thing Eren did after returning to Birka was to tell the people that he and Enel would be away for a while. During this time they wouldn't have to pay any taxes.
This news caused the citizens to rejoice, which hurt Eren's ego a bit. He hadn't thought of himself as a bad ruler, but his constant fights with Enel had disturbed the public order during the last years, so that might have been a reason for the celebration.
After that, Eren and Enel packed a few things like kitchen utensils as well as large amounts of food to keep them full during their journey.
Next came the most important thing: their ship. Of course, they wouldn't use just any ship, no. Eren had planned to create a flying ship similar to the Arc Maxim that Enel had built in the original anime.
For that reason, he had taught Enel the basics of physics that he still remembered from his past life. Even though he didn't remember too much, Enel was much smarter than he let on, so he had already developed a working blueprint with the little knowledge he had access to.
And the materials for the ship? They simply took them from the ruins of Shandora. There was more than enough gold there for them to use, so they even took a little something for their travel expenses.
Using his teleportation ability, Eren brought a huge block of pure gold to an empty field of island clouds. Here, Eren was supposed to assemble their boat.
"Are you ready?" Eren asked Enel for the last time. But the God of Thunder was confident and just nodded his head. Then he laid his hands on the gold block and directed his lightning into it. This would create enough heat to melt the gold, allowing him to shape it to his liking. He had already used this ability in their spar yesterday to shape his staff into a shield.
Finally, the gold turned slightly orange and liquid. Enel moved enormous masses of this liquid and formed it into the shape of a ship. It became a large boat without a mast. Instead, there were propellers on its left and right sides.
The boat was also much smaller than the original. Since Eren planned to create only a small elite crew, similar to the straw hats, he didn't want to waste energy by making it bigger than it needed to be.
Eren estimated it to be about the size of the Thousand Sunny, but much uglier. Eren hadn't expected how ugly a ship made of gold would really be. It glowed all over and reflected the sun so that it was almost blindingly bright.
While Eren hated it, Enel looked at it with drool coming out of his mouth. This guy really loved gold. Unfortunately, Eren would have to destroy his dreams. The ship in front of him was just an eyesore and there was no way he would be seen on it.
"There will be a slight change of plan," Eren informed Wyper. "We will not leave until tomorrow, because the ship has become too ugly and needs to be repaired." Wyper was a little confused, but he wouldn't complain about an extra day with his tribe.
After that, Eren transported the ship directly to Birka, surprising every citizen nearby. He told them that it had to be completely covered with wood by tomorrow, otherwise he would double their taxes for the next 5 years.
Hearing his threats, everyone quickly got to work. Enel, on the other hand, lay on the ground crying as his beautiful golden ship was completely ruined.
Eren spent the rest of the day relaxing, trying to heal the last of his wounds, and also cooking a huge dinner for himself.
The next day, the ship was completely finished. It looked like a real ship now, instead of the golden metal abomination it had been before. Eren had also told the Birkans to cover the main deck with clover, because he really liked green and thought that the constant blue of the sea would be a bit boring.
He would have liked to use grass instead, but he wasn't sure if Franky had already secured the patent for that. Eren didn't want to risk any copyright infringement.
But the most beautiful thing on the whole ship was its figurehead. It was the head of a Chinese dragon with long whiskers and antlers. It was made entirely of gold and was the only golden detail left on the ship besides the turbines.
It also seemed to crackle with electricity, as it was made by Enel, who wanted to put a bit of himself into his artwork. Eren would have liked to see his power represented in some way as well, but it was hard to incorporate portals or compressed space into a work of art.
For the rest of the ship, Eren had also placed some island clouds on the deck and in each room, as they were the perfect material to make beds out of. They were soft and comfortable.
When Eren had finally seen all the rooms, he turned to the still depressed Enel.
"Start the engine, battery boy!" It was finally time to test the flight capabilities of their ship.
Enel's mood suddenly changed for the better, as he was excited to finally test his own creation. He channeled his lightning into the deck, which in turn would power a complicated process that was too difficult to describe now.
[A/N: Definitely too hard to describe. It's not the fact that I have no idea how something like this would even work.]
The turbines on the side began to spin. Slowly at first, but then they got faster and faster until their motion was just a blur. Finally, the ship lifted off the ground and moved upward.
The Birkans who were still nearby were completely shocked, as they had never imagined that such a thing was possible.
As the ship slowly moved away from the island, Eren stood on the railing and waved to the citizens below. After six and a half conscious years on this island, it was finally time to leave.
As they made their way to Shandora, Eren thought of an extremely important detail they had forgotten.
"What do you want to call the ship?" Eren asked Enel. Being its creator, he should have the right to name it.
"How about..." Enel thought for a moment. "Ah, that's it, The Ark Maxim."
"Hahah, that's great, let's call it that." It seems that some things really can't be changed, no matter how much he influenced a character. Does destiny really exist in this world?
After some time, they finally reached Shandora, where they picked up Wyper under the eyes of some completely stunned Shandians. To be honest, Wyper didn't fare any better, as he was just as surprised as his tribe members.
Eren could have teleported him away, but he wanted to flex with his new ship. As their ruler, he had to have a certain amount of swag. Who wanted a lame king?
Finally, the ship made its way to the edge of Sky Island, from where it finally descended into the blue sea. Their quest was about to begin.
"By the way, Enel, how long do you think you can keep the ship flying?" Eren asked his brother, since he probably wouldn't be able to keep it afloat forever.
"Probably about 4 hours I would say. After that the engine would overheat and the turbines would start to smoke. The wood on the deck would probably start to burn as well. But if we're talking about power output, I could probably go for a couple of days. It really doesn't take that much energy."
With that, Eren was mostly satisfied. For him, the ability to levitate was more of an accessory. If he needed to get away from his enemies really fast, he could always just teleport away or change the properties of space.
This reminded Eren of something he had almost forgotten. While Skypiea was still within the range of his Observation Haki, he set a spatial anchor point somewhere there. This was basically like a landmark that would allow him to always sense the location of the island. When he was near it, he could even teleport there directly.
This was one of his overwhelming abilities that came with the Beginner II mastery of his fruit. Even though it didn't sound that great, he could even attach these anchor points to people as long as he was within 5 meters of them. This would make it the perfect tracking device.
While he was at it, he also put a marker on Enel and Wyper. Who knew if one of them might get lost or caught one day. Better safe than sorry.
As they approached the surface of the water, Wyper became excited. This was the first time he had seen the real Blue Sea up close. He could even see the island of Jaya in the distance.
"By the way, Captain, what are your next plans?"
