Spectral Love: Laughing Through Multiple Worlds

Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Origins of the Duo

Xu Yunfei and Lan Zhihao were not ordinary people. They had come from a world that teetered perpetually on the brink of collapse, a place where supernatural horrors roamed freely, and survival often depended on wits, strength, or sheer luck. Their paths had crossed by chance—or perhaps by fate—but their stories began long before that fateful meeting in the ruined temple.

---

Xu Yunfei: The Chaotic Genius

Yunfei hailed from the chaotic Jiangnan Province, a region infamous for its frequent supernatural outbreaks. His childhood was a blur of mischief, ghost encounters, and desperate attempts by exorcists to keep their world from unraveling. He discovered his powers at the age of seven when, during a particularly intense game of hide-and-seek, he accidentally banished a wandering spirit to another dimension.

"Oops," the young Yunfei had said, holding a glowing sigil in one hand and a lollipop in the other.

The exorcists who found him were horrified, not because of the banishment but because the sigil he had drawn was a forbidden spell known to cause catastrophic backfires. For most, attempting such a spell would lead to instant obliteration. Yunfei, however, had managed it with the casual air of a child doodling in the dirt.

From then on, he was a curiosity—and a headache—for every exorcist in the region. Despite their best efforts, no one could train him properly. Yunfei was too unpredictable, too reckless, and far too interested in turning everything into a joke.

"Why take life seriously?" he'd once said during a particularly disastrous training session. "We're all just living in someone else's ghost story anyway."

By the time he reached adulthood, Yunfei had earned a reputation as both a genius and a walking disaster. His unique ability to manipulate chaotic energy made him a valuable asset, but his refusal to take anything seriously ensured that he was often a last resort for even the most desperate clients.

Lan Zhihao: The Reluctant Savior

Zhihao, on the other hand, came from the northern Wuling Empire, a stark contrast to Jiangnan's chaos. His homeland was cold, disciplined, and unyielding—a reflection of Zhihao himself. Born into a family of renowned ghost hunters, he had been trained from a young age to wield a blade and face the horrors that plagued their world.

Unlike Yunfei, Zhihao's childhood was devoid of laughter. His father was a harsh man who believed in discipline above all else, and his mother was a distant figure whose attention was reserved for those who met her impossibly high standards. Zhihao learned quickly that failure was not an option and that weakness was unforgivable.

By the time he was sixteen, Zhihao had surpassed most of his mentors. His swordsmanship was unmatched, and his ability to channel spiritual energy into his blade made him a force to be reckoned with. But for all his skill, Zhihao was haunted by a sense of emptiness—a gnawing void that no amount of victories could fill.

He was a protector, a savior, and a hero to his people. But he was also alone.

---

The worlds Yunfei and Zhihao came from were connected by a fragile web of dimensional barriers. These barriers kept their respective supernatural horrors contained, but they were far from indestructible. Over the years, countless scholars and exorcists had warned of the consequences of tampering with the barriers, but their warnings often fell on deaf ears.

It was during one such incident—an ill-advised experiment by a group of rogue exorcists—that Yunfei and Zhihao's fates became intertwined.

---

The experiment took place in the neutral city of Xingtian, a melting pot of cultures, practices, and egos. A group of rogue exorcists sought to merge the energies of Jiangnan's chaotic spirits with Wuling's disciplined spiritual power, believing it would create a new form of energy capable of solving their world's problems.

Instead, it ripped a hole in the dimensional barriers.

Spirits and horrors from countless other worlds began to pour through the rift, and the city quickly descended into chaos. The exorcists were overwhelmed, their hastily constructed wards crumbling under the onslaught.

Yunfei had been in Xingtian at the time, not because he cared about the experiment but because he'd heard rumors of a street vendor selling the best dumplings in the region. He'd been halfway through his second plate when the first rift opened.

"Seriously?" he'd muttered, dodging a spectral claw that shattered the table in front of him. "I can't even eat in peace?"

Zhihao, meanwhile, had been sent to Xingtian by his family to investigate the rogue exorcists. He arrived just in time to witness the rift expand, its swirling energy threatening to consume the entire city.

The two met amidst the chaos, their paths colliding as they fought to contain the rift. Yunfei had been the first to speak, greeting Zhihao with his trademark grin despite the carnage around them.

"Hey, Ice King!" he'd called out, dodging a bolt of dark energy. "You here to join the party, or are you just here for the snacks?"

Zhihao had ignored him, focusing instead on slicing through a wave of shadowy creatures that surged toward them. But Yunfei was persistent, his chatter continuing even as he summoned chaotic sigils to trap the creatures.

"You know," Yunfei had said, flashing a sigil that disintegrated a particularly nasty spirit, "you're pretty good with that sword. Ever consider doing this full-time?"

"I am doing this full-time," Zhihao had replied, his tone clipped.

"Well, aren't you just the poster child for professionalism?" Yunfei had teased. "Let me guess—you're one of those 'lone-wolf' types who thinks teamwork is for suckers?"

Zhihao's glare had been answer enough.

Despite their differences—or perhaps because of them—the two found themselves working together to close the rift. Zhihao's discipline and precision balanced Yunfei's chaos and unpredictability, and together, they managed to seal the rift before it consumed the city entirely.

---

In the aftermath of the battle, they were approached by a mysterious figure draped in shadow—a Traveler, one of the enigmatic beings who moved freely between worlds.

"You have potential," the Traveler had said, its voice echoing with otherworldly resonance. "Your world is but one of many. If you wish, I can show you the others."

Yunfei had been intrigued immediately. "You mean there are more places like this? Count me in!"

Zhihao had been more cautious, his hand instinctively moving to his blade. "What's the catch?"

"No catch," the Traveler had replied. "Only opportunity. Your skills are wasted here. There are other worlds that need you."

It was Zhihao who ultimately agreed first, his sense of duty outweighing his distrust. Yunfei, of course, followed without hesitation, his grin as wide as ever.

---

And so, their journey began. Guided by the Traveler, they moved from world to world, each one stranger and more dangerous than the last. For Zhihao, it was a chance to fulfill his duty on a grander scale. For Yunfei, it was a new adventure—and a chance to irritate Zhihao on a daily basis.

By the time they arrived at the Haunted Academy, they were seasoned world-hoppers. But even they weren't prepared for what awaited them there.
