Chapter 185: Chapter 185: Taking the Offensive
In the control room of the Stormbringer, Feng Mo looked intently at the uniformed middle-aged man on the video feed. He remembered seeing this man in the Council—the Supreme Commander of the Snowhawk Fleet, Zheng Yi. An exceptionally skilled and talented fleet commander, Zheng Yi had earned the distinction of being the Federation's tenth commander to lead a T5 fleet before the age of fifty—truly a pinnacle in his career.
Zheng Yi, in turn, studied the much younger Feng Mo. Although Zheng Yi considered himself gifted, the young Storm Lord before him was not even thirty yet and matched, if not exceeded, his own talents in leadership and strategy.
Moreover, in starship design, few in the Federation could rival Feng Mo—only the most elite in the Federation's Starship Design Division might come close.
What kind of genius embodied all these talents—command, starship design, and more? Zheng Yi dared not think further, fearing it might sap his fighting spirit, just as Feng Mo's own battle-ready spirit intensified.
For three minutes, they locked gazes without a word. Then Zheng Yi seemed to realize something, abruptly ending the call. Turning to his fleet chatroom, he ordered loudly:
"All ships, prepare defensive interceptors, max out star shields, and fully charge primary and secondary cannons. Fire immediately upon detecting any cloaked bombers!"
It was the calculated move of a T5 fleet commander. These defensive measures significantly improved their survival rate against cloaked bombers.
However, an error in intelligence can make a substantial difference. Zheng Yi's defenses would have worked effectively against the T4 Scorpions—but the Snowhawk Fleet was facing T5 Mystic Birds.
"T5 Sword Dragons, launch 600 T5 interstellar missiles. Mello, you're clear to proceed!"
With two consecutive orders, Feng Mo initiated his offensive. The missile bays of the twenty Sword Dragon-class T5 starship escorts opened wide, firing a swarm of T5 missiles that streaked toward the Snowhawk Fleet.
The Snowhawk Fleet was battle-hardened, and as the wave of 600 missiles bore down on them, all interceptors activated, and primary and secondary guns remained charged, awaiting further instructions.
Even with all their preparations, the Snowhawk Fleet's interception rate against 600 missiles was unlikely to surpass 70%. Despite Zheng Yi's prior orders, the fleet's smart systems reported an interception rate of only 59%.
This meant that over 200 missiles broke through, striking the Snowhawk Fleet. T5 ships held steady with their star shields, able to withstand one or two missiles, but the quasi-T5 ships were in trouble; each missile hit took down about 60% of a shield's energy.
If a ship took three consecutive hits, it would likely be crippled. When the missiles cleared, three or four unfortunate quasi-T5 ships had already been taken out of action. Naturally, Mello and her sister seized the opportunity Feng Mo had set up for them.
"Mystic Bird One, proceed with the decapitation strike. Mystic Birds Two, Three, and Four, full saturation bombardment!"
Mello gave her orders immediately, with the Mystic Bird One bomber having already positioned itself close to the Snowhawk Fleet's T5 carrier. Its auto-targeting system locked onto the enemy flagship—a perfect spot for a bombing strike. At her command, a barrage of anti-matter annihilation missiles fired, followed by three neutron missiles in swift succession.
Seated in the flagship's control room, Zheng Yi's unease deepened as he observed Feng Mo's initial missile barrage. Such a move wasn't typical for the Storm Lord; Feng Mo rarely resorted to missile bombardment immediately. In fact, this was when a fleet's defenses were strongest, minimizing impact.
Feng Mo's usual tactic was to first deploy T4 Scorpions for a surprise attack, creating chaos and paving the way for massive missile strikes to secure a decisive advantage.
But Zheng Yi couldn't locate the stealth bombers, and his unease grew. Suddenly, an alarm blared in the control room.
"Alert! Flagship locked by enemy missiles. Confirmed: 23 T5 anti-matter annihilation missiles and three T5 neutron missiles incoming."
Facing this decapitation attempt, Zheng Yi made the right call:
"Deploy all drones around the flagship. Begin interceptive countermeasures."
This move successfully thwarted Mystic Bird One's decapitation attempt as the flagship was now shielded by drones, denying a direct hit.
Mello had no choice but to order Mystic Bird One to release its entire payload. The flagship was preserved, but the cloaked bombers remained undetected, blanketing the Snowhawk Fleet in a storm of missiles.
Even a seasoned T5 fleet like the Snowhawk Fleet couldn't avoid chaos. The Mystic Birds timed their assault masterfully, coinciding with the Snowhawk Fleet's efforts to intercept the Sword Dragons' missiles.
Explosions rippled through the Snowhawk Fleet, shattering T5 star shields. Then came the second wave of neutron missiles and proton torpedoes, which punched through hull armor, igniting fires that engulfed entire starships.
In a split second, Zheng Yi watched in horror as nearly a hundred of the Snowhawk Fleet's green indicators blinked out.
But Feng Mo wasn't finished yet. In battle, you strike when your enemy is down. Now was the time to inflict maximum damage on the Snowhawk Fleet.
"Sword Dragons, fire a second wave of T5 interstellar missiles! Orca, deploy all drones and initiate the third bombardment."
His orders followed swiftly as another 600 missiles launched, followed by a swarm of 1,100 combat drones from the Orca.
Missiles and drone-fired lasers formed a dense web of fire that enveloped the Snowhawk Fleet.
Despite Zheng Yi's best efforts, his countermeasures were largely focused on intercepting missiles and neutralizing drones. Little fire actually reached the Storm Fleet, and any stray laser that did was absorbed by star shields.
Feng Mo's release of the drones was a one-way mission; he hadn't intended for them to return. He continued to press the attack with another order:
"Sword Dragons, remove engine restrictions, enter full-speed mode. Lock onto Snowhawk Fleet coordinates—prepare for close-quarters combat!"b
Feng Mo knew that despite the relentless bombardment, the Snowhawk Fleet still had at least a hundred ships remaining. Instead of exchanging fire at a distance, where odds favored neither side, the time was ripe to capitalize on their disarray and unleash the Sword Dragons in a full-frontal assault.
Close combat was an old tradition for the Storm Fleet, and Feng Mo was confident that his twenty Sword Dragons could stand against the remaining Snowhawk ships.
As the Sword Dragons accelerated toward the Snowhawk Fleet, Feng Mo issued yet another command.
