Chapter 7: A Friend
Zara's POV
I walk out of the room, tears streaming down my face. My sister had forgotten me and all the memories we had. I sit in a corner and begin to mope about my life, lost in my misery. I don't even notice someone crouching beside me.
"You're really not pulling off the whole 'tragic hero' vibe, you know," Damian says bluntly, looking at me. I glance at him before mumbling, "Go away." He actually considers it for a moment before saying, "Nah. Why are you crying, anyway?" I glare at him before staring back at the ground. He pauses, then pats my head awkwardly.
Damian's POV
I walk into the hallway and see her crying in a corner. "Dramatic much?" I think as I approach her. She's cute, though. I quickly stop myself.
"You're really not pulling off the whole 'tragic hero' vibe, you know," I say, crouching next to her.
"Go away," she mumbles, avoiding eye contact.
"Nah," I reply. "Why are you crying, anyway?" She glares at me but doesn't answer. I pat her head and say, "Yeah, your sister forgot you, but this is a chance to have a fresh start with her."
I stand up and extend my hand toward her. She hesitates but takes it, and I help her up. Then, to my surprise, she hugs me and calls me her friend. I feel flustered but quickly regain my composure.
"Whatever you'd like to think," I say, trying to sound calmer than I feel. She smiles at me, but I quickly look away and start walking toward the door.
Kara's POV
"Wait a minute—you're saying I have a sister? And no one thought to tell me sooner?" I say, frustrated.
Clark has a guilty expression on his face. "I wanted it to be a surprise. I didn't know you wouldn't remember her," he says, avoiding my eyes.
I smack my forehead. "Clark, if I did remember her, wouldn't I have said something?"
"Don't be too hard on him. It sounded like a good idea," Diana says, trying to keep the peace.
Suddenly, the door opens. Robin and Zara walk in. "But… I thought you were here just now?" Diana says, confused.
"Don't ask. You'll just end up more confused," Bruce says, patting her shoulder. I quickly run up to Zara and apologize frantically, but she smiles and says, "I should be the one apologizing. I expected you to remember every detail of your childhood, which is technically impossible. So I'm sorry."
She's too nice. I can't have that.
"No, I must make it up to you. We will do something together, like… shopping!" I say, waving my hands in the air.
"She can't," Bruce says.
"Why not?" I say defiantly.
"First off, look at what she's wearing. Secondly, I don't think she'll be able to converse comfortably with anyone other than us," Clark says.
"I'll just say she's a cosplayer, and I'll talk to whoever needs to be spoken with," I respond, already leading Zara toward the door.
"How will you explain the fact that her clothes look exactly like the statue from the exhibit?" Robin asks.
I stop moving, then remove my extra jacket and put it on her. "Doesn't this look better?"
Bruce still isn't convinced. "Damian, go with them," he says.
Damian, confused, says, "Why me?"
Bruce just looks at him. The Justice League members leave the room, and I decide to listen to what they're saying as they walk away.
"Why did you make Damian go with them?" Clark asks.
Bruce shrugs and says, "He should go out more often."
I smile. "Okay, let's go!"
