Chapter 383: Chapter 383: Thor Meets His Companions
"Roar!" Upon witnessing the swift disposal of the super soldiers, the beast warriors grew enraged. Though unable to speak, their minds were clear, and they did not need further commands from Hydra to roar angrily and charge toward the Immortal Palace group.
Some of the beast warriors even took flight halfway through their charge, a new type Robert had not seen before—flying beast warriors.
These warriors could fly not because of any special power but because they were avian in nature, adding a new variety to the ranks of the beast warriors.
"Be careful, these creatures are no ordinary foes!" Sif warned her companions with a serious look as she spotted the flying warriors. These creatures radiated no energy, but Sif keenly sensed a menacing aura emanating from them.
The three brave warriors of the Immortal Palace were no pushovers, hardened by countless battles. They too sensed the power of the beast warriors, tightening their grip on their weapons as one of them commented, "Is the Central Court this dangerous? We've dealt with warriors comparable to Asgardian civilians, but what are these creatures? Isn't the Central Court supposed to be inhabited only by humans and animals? These don't seem human..."
"Who cares what they are, let's kill them!" Sif charged forward with valor, taking the lead towards the beast warriors.
Sif could be considered one of the few female warriors of Asgard, and had the Valkyrie corps not been disbanded, she might well have been one of them.
Sif first engaged the hawk-men in the sky, as their ability to fly posed a significant threat, especially since dangers from above were harder to counter.
"Swipe!"
"Swipe!"
However, Sif hadn't expected that while her blade wounded the hawk-men, their talons also posed a threat to her. Had it not been for her armor, she might have been as bloodied as the hawk-men.
This meant the hawk-men were indeed a threat to Sif! And after being wounded by Sif's blade, they didn't recklessly press the attack but swiftly retreated, increasing the distance between them.
It was evident that although Sif could jump high, there was a gap compared to those who could truly fly, especially since Sif herself could not fly.
It was a somewhat awkward fact that most Asgardians couldn't fly; even Thor could only fly with the aid of Mjolnir, which wasn't an ability of his own but a power of the hammer.
In a sense, Asgardians were not true gods but rather more powerful life forms. Even Sif, who could harness some divine power, could not fly, unlike the hawk-men who simply needed their wings.
Yet, Asgard had its strengths, especially when Sif realized that her ordinary attacks with her blade did little to harm the hawk-men. Her divine power surged, and she unleashed the energy within her blade.
"Hisss!" With a flash, a beam of light pierced through the retreating hawk-man's head, instantly killing it. Despite their speed and ability to fly, the hawk-men could not evade this burst of light.
Unfortunately, while Sif's blade was sharp, it couldn't set itself apart from earthly metals in sharpness. However, when it came to enchantments of strength, earthly metals were no match for Asgardian craftsmanship.
Sif's blade was no artifact of Frigga's caliber, but the energy it contained was formidable, far beyond anything Wakanda could compare.
"Roar!" As one hawk-man fell, the other beast warriors grew even more furious. McCarthy, observing from afar, also grew angry. While the loss of super soldiers was painful, it was within acceptable limits. Beast warriors, however, were different. Their success rate was much lower than that of super soldiers, not to mention their lifespan issues.
Thus, the preciousness of beast warriors far exceeded that of super soldiers. Even if McCarthy wanted to brainwash the Immortal Palace group and recruit them, he hadn't prepared for the loss of so many beast warriors, considering them the pinnacle of Hydra's combat power.
Despite being an undercover agent from another Hydra branch, McCarthy's ambition led him to view this Hydra line as his own property. A significant loss was something he could not afford, especially since this branch of Hydra had not managed to acquire the technology or remains of the Ivan mech suit to enhance its combat capabilities like other Hydra branches.
For this Hydra line, beast warriors were their strongest asset, at least until Baron Strucker's lineage re-emerged.
"Should I send Thor on a mission?" McCarthy pondered as he saw the beast warriors getting injured, his eyes flickering with hesitation but not yet making a decision.
After all, Hydra's brainwashing was potent, but not infallible—Bucky Barnes was a prime example. Now, Thor seemed fine because he hadn't been overly stimulated, and to McCarthy, who saw Thor's mind as somewhat abnormal
, any significant issues arising from the appearance of the Immortal Palace group would be unacceptable.
"I don't believe it; so many beast warriors can't handle just one person!" After some hesitation, McCarthy decided not to seek out Thor but sent more beast warriors instead, even though only one hawk-man had died.
McCarthy didn't want the beast warriors to suffer more injuries, and the best method seemed to be overwhelming the Immortal Palace group with sheer numbers.
McCarthy's plan proved effective. The first batch of beast warriors didn't continue their attack but began entangling the Immortal Palace group, buying time for more of their comrades to arrive.
The Immortal Palace group quickly sensed something was amiss, but the sheer number of enemies, and their superior physical strength, posed a significant challenge. If not for their Asgardian weapons, they might not have stood a chance against the beast warriors.
The beast warriors' plan to stall for time was quickly succeeding. A large group of beast warriors soon faced the Immortal Palace group, not as numerous as the super soldiers or Hydra soldiers, but still enough to shock and even despair the hearts of the Asgardians.
Surrounded by dense ranks of beast warriors, the Immortal Palace group was quickly split and encircled. They initially tried to fight side by side, but sometimes fighting together wasn't so simple, especially against a larger, nearly equally powerful enemy.
Moreover, the Immortal Palace group couldn't just defend passively without striking back, for being surrounded and worn down was inevitable.
After several bouts, although the Immortal Palace group had successfully killed some beast warriors, they were separated and each faced attacks from all sides.
"This is getting difficult; we've been surrounded before, but either Thor was there to help us out, or Heimdall would manage to bring us back. But this time, it seems a bit dire..." Fandral commented, wounded and holding his sword with resignation.
"Let's give it our all; these guys don't seem to want to let us go..." Volstagg shook his head, his axe bloody, his eyes gleaming coldly.
"That's right! Asgard has no warriors who fear battle!" Hogan, gripping his mace covered in gore, spoke fiercely, "If they want to kill us, they'll have to pay a hefty price!"
"Hisss!" On the other side, surrounded, Sif didn't speak. She clenched her teeth, her blade releasing powerful energy once more, killing several beast warriors, though it drained much of her divine power.
Among Thor's friends, Sif was arguably stronger than the three brave warriors, and even Loki, without his illusions, wouldn't be a match for her.
But now, with overwhelming enemy numbers, Sif's divine power wasn't inexhaustible. Releasing energy from her blade came at a cost, and not every weapon could store endless energy like Mjolnir.
While the situation was dire for the Immortal Palace group, McCarthy's expression was no better. Having sent all the beast warriors to capture the Immortal Palace group while also trying to avoid excessive casualties was his plan.
However, the current battle, though highly disadvantageous for the Immortal Palace group, had still consumed a vast number of beast warriors—his future assets.
But McCarthy no longer had the luxury to worry about assets, as Ah Fu had become aware of the situation.
In this Hydra lineage, McCarthy, though undercover, had risen to a high position, being one of the few capable of commanding beast warriors and even Thor.
The problem was, this wasn't McCarthy's Hydra to command freely. When the beast warriors suffered significant casualties, someone would inform Ah Fu, whose power was indeed greater than that of a beast warrior. But that didn't mean Ah Fu could ignore such losses; after all, as the boss, he couldn't possibly handle everything himself.
Though this time, Ah Fu did need to take matters into his own hands.
"Thud!" As McCarthy worried about the losses, Ah Fu appeared before him and kicked him away.
McCarthy was a super soldier, perhaps strong among them, but compared to Ah Fu, he was significantly weaker. He crashed to the ground, bleeding profusely, unable to speak, looking far worse than the Immortal Palace group outside...
"I'll settle accounts with you when we get back!" After kicking McCarthy away, Ah Fu glared at him and headed outside.
Following Ah Fu was another figure, none other than Thor, summoned to obey.
"Clear the battlefield, make way for me!" Soon, Ah Fu entered the fray, ordering the beast warriors.
The beast warriors quickly reacted to Ah Fu's command, exposing part of the battlefield to allow Ah Fu and Thor to reach where Hogan was fighting.
"Hmm?" Hogan, realizing the attackers were lessening around him, paused to catch his breath and recover a bit of his strength.
The battle had been fierce, and Hogan hadn't heard Ah Fu's voice or perhaps heard but didn't register it.
Now,
Hogan's body was covered in wounds, his Asgardian armor tattered, unable to withstand the attacks of so many enemies. Even the relatively intact parts were scratched...
"Hmm? Thor?!" But Hogan soon noticed Ah Fu and Thor approaching, his eyes lighting up with surprise as he called out loudly to Thor, "You're here, quick! Help us fight these monsters!"
"Hmm?" Thor and Ah Fu paused at Hogan's words. Thor's expression didn't change much, having been brainwashed and unaware of who Hogan was, merely puzzled as to why Hogan knew his name.
But Ah Fu's reaction was different; he frowned, looking at Hogan and the other battle areas, obviously unaware of McCarthy's speculations about the Immortal Palace group's identities...
"Since he calls your name, you take action!" But Ah Fu quickly regained his composure, glanced at Hogan, and instructed Thor.
