Supernatural: Reincarnated into the Hunt

Chapter 28: 28. Burn them all

The sun had dipped below the horizon, leaving the sky dark and heavy. James and Ash stood outside the dilapidated building, staring up at its rotting walls and broken windows. It looked more like a set from a bad horror movie than a real place.

"You ready for this?" James asked, glancing at Ash.

Ash adjusted the strap on his bag and smirked. "Hell yes. Dr. Badass is locked and loaded."

James snorted, shaking his head. "You're really sticking with that nickname, huh?"

"Damn right I am," Ash shot back, grinning wide. "Now let's go. I don't want to find out what happens if those spirits get bored while we're out here chatting."

With that, they stepped forward, the creak of the manor's porch welcoming them like the opening act of a bad dream.

James glanced at Ash as they stepped through the creaking threshold of the old manor. The air was thick with dust and carried a faint, nauseating scent of decay. Their boots echoed on the warped floorboards as Ash's flashlight swept over faded wallpaper and cobweb-laden corners, casting eerie shadows.

"This place smells like death," Ash muttered, wrinkling his nose. "If I end up as a ghost, James, promise me I won't be stuck in a dump like this. A nice sports bar would do."

James smirked, keeping his voice low. "If you end up a ghost, I'll stick you in the men's bathroom at Ellen's. That way, every time someone takes a leak, they'll think of you."

"Real nice," Ash shot back with a glare. "Remind me to haunt your ass specifically."

They ventured deeper into the house, the oppressive silence broken only by the occasional creak of wood and faint, indistinct whispers. James felt a familiar simmering warmth beneath his skin—the Essence Flame, ready and waiting.

Ash stopped abruptly, frowning. "You feel that? The air's... heavier then before. Like it's pressing on us."

"Yeah," James muttered, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the hallway. "They're here."

Although James couldn't see anyone in his ability's radius, but he felt that the ghosts were definitely near.

"Awesome," Ash said, voice dripping with sarcasm. "Nothing like a bunch of creepy dead assholes eyeing us like we're their next goddamn meal."

The oppressive air thickened as they reached the grand staircase. James rested a hand on the icy banister, his senses heightened.

Ash scoffed, pulling out his flask of holy water and shaking it like a bartender. "The plan is we don't let that happen. And if it does… we run like hell or pray your freaky magic fire does the trick."

"That's not a plan, Ash. That's a shitty excuse for a plan."

Of course James and Ash weren't stupid to talk about the plan in their current situation, and that too after coming to the manor. They were just trying to ease themselves in the growing oppressive atmosphere of the manor.

Ash shrugged unapologetically. "Hey, you're the big bad ghostbuster. I'm just the pretty face with the brains."

"Yeah the one that my emptied my wallet," James added.

"Details," Ash said dismissively, motioning up the staircase. "Now, come on. Let's find Eleanor's ghost and get this over with."

As they climbed the stairs, faint whispers turned into low, eerie murmurs. James stopped, straining to make out the voices.

"You hear that?" he asked.

"Yeah," Ash replied, his flashlight darting nervously. "If I hear nursery rhymes, I'm out."

James smiled but didn't reply, focusing instead on the door at the end of the hall. As they moved closer, the oppressive energy spiked.

Suddenly, a deafening wail echoed through the manor, and ghostly figures began materializing around them—dozens of them.

"Shit," Ash hissed, stepping back.

James acted fast, his Essence Flame roaring to life in his palms. "Get back!" he barked, thrusting his hands outward to form a ring of blue fire. The flames kept the spirits from reaching Ash, their flickering forms recoiling from the heat.

"You've got their attention," Ash muttered, fumbling in his bag. "Now hold it!"

The spirits hissed and shrieked, swirling like a storm as they tried to break through the fiery barrier. James focused, the Essence Flame burning brighter as he began to burn the spirits and absorbing their essence energy at the same time. Each one vanished in a flash of blue light as he pulled them into himself.

The process was quick but draining. Sweat beaded on James's forehead as more and more spirits dissolved. He felt an unnatural heaviness spreading through his body, like he was overfilled with raw energy. Almost thirty spirits had surrounded him and charging at him, trying their best to harm in every possible way. Even though they were afraid of the fire, they didn't stop.

James wondered as to why they weren't using Telekinesis like most spirits do, or whether they weren't able to do so. But he was glad that they were charging at him like a mad bull.

Ash, meanwhile, was working on setting up salt lines and throwing holy water at any spirit that dared to stray near him. "You've got this, right?" Ash called, as he was dealing with more than five spirits.

"Working on it!" James shot back, gritting his teeth. "Destroy as much as you can and watch out for Eleanor too!"

Meanwhile, Eleanor's ghost appeared at the edge of the room, her hollow eyes fixed on Ash. She shrieked, the sound piercing and filled with hatred, before rushing at him.

"Oh, fu*k me," Ash growled, firing his salt-loaded shotgun. The blast slowed her down, but it wasn't enough.

She growled at him, throwing him into the wall. He groaned in pain, fumbling for his flask of holy water. He splashed it on her, making her scream and recoil.

But Eleanor wasn't done. She threw him again, his head slamming against the floor. "James! Little help here, man!" Ash shouted, coughing as he struggled to aim his shotgun.

James, having absorbed the last of the thirty spirits, turned just in time to see a massive cupboard hurtling toward Ash. "Ash, duck!" James yelled, thrusting his hand out. The Essence Guard flared to life, creating an invisible barrier that stopped the cupboard midair.

"Holy shit!" Ash gasped, staring wide-eyed at the barrier. He quickly crawled away from there, getting behind James.

James didn't waste time. He stepped forward, flames lighting up in his palms, growing hotter as he focused. He threw the fire at Eleanor, aiming directly at her. She screamed, her ghostly form flickering as the flames burned at her essence. But even through the fire, she held on, twisting and warping in the air like a specter trying to fight the flames.

With a hiss of frustration, Eleanor lifted her hands, her eyes glowing with dark energy. She used her Telekinesis to send a strong wave of force at James, trying to push him back with everything she had.

But James was prepared. He called up Essence Guard, an invisible shield of energy that surrounded him. When the Telekinetic wave hit, it bounced off the shield, unable to break through. James stood firm, not moving, as the wave hit him but didn't knock him back.

Before he could even move, Eleanor threw everything she could find at him. Chairs, bookshelves, glass, even paintings were all lifted into the air and shot toward him by her power. But the Essence Guard held strong. Each object that came near him collided with the shield and shattered, falling harmlessly to the floor.

The barrier absorbed the impact, but the sheer number of objects pushed James back.

Ash quickly jumped to the side, barely dodging a flying chair that almost hit him.

James winced, feeling the strain of keeping the shield up against the attack. Sweat beaded on his forehead, but he didn't back down. "Ash!" he called out. "I need a distraction, now!"

Ash was already prepared and threw the flask of holy water at Eleanor. The holy water splashed against her form and sizzled, making her shriek as it burned her. Meanwhile he also spread salt around her, trying to limit her reach.

Eleanor flickered and staggered, her form wavering as the water burned through her. The salt trapped her in a place, giving her no chance to recover.

James saw the opening and acted fast.

He gathered all his energy and shot another blast of Essence Flame right at Eleanor's heart. This time, the flames tore through her, burning her away in an explosion of blue energy.

Her screams echoed throughout the manor and both James and Ash had to cover their ears due to how loud it was.

As the screams stopped, James called back the flames with a wave of his hand. The blue fire disappeared and Eleanor's spirit was destroyed, nowhere to be seen.

Ash groaned, as he dropped to the floor and rubbed the back of his head. "I fuc*ing hate this job, man."
