Surrounded by the darkness of the past

Chapter 1: Prologue

Poland, 1944.

A young woman runs down a dark corridor and looks back sometimes, to make sure no one is following her.

People trapped behind bars are screaming and begging for help, but there is nothing she can do. As much as she wants to save them, she must protect herself and the unborn child who is the fruit of her forbidden love.

She should never have fallen in love with this man, but her love for him made her save herself from death. She acted selfishly, but at the time, no one thought of playing the hero. Everyone was trying to save his life — at the expense of others.

She stops around the next bend, hearing voices coming from afar. She clings to the wall with her whole body and covers her mouth, trying to silence the heavy breathing caused by the long run. Furthermore, she knows that what she is trying to do now is very risky and could take her life. If he found out that she was attempting to escape from him, then he would have no mercy on her. Even if she is carrying his child in her belly.

She longs to escape from here and free herself from him once and for all. Even love for him can't stop her. The woman can no longer bear to look at the injustice of innocent people.

From under her dress, she takes out a black and white photo showing a handsome man dressed in uniform. It is the only photograph she managed to take from his office.

She runs her finger over the slippery photo, then applies it to her heart. She looks out from behind the wall to make sure she can continue her escape. The voices quiet down, so he moves ahead with a nimble step. She knows perfectly well which way she can get out. Several times she suspects the plan of the building, lying in the General's office. She did it without any suspicion.

She stops in front of the metal door and looks over her shoulder to make sure no one is around. Likewise, she opens it and plugs her nose as an unpleasant smell wafts toward her. Furthermore, she bravely runs down the stairs and looks around. She tries to recall the plan of the underground.

She is shocked to see what is hidden behind the bars. Bloodied people lie tied to chains, struggling to catch their breath. Many of them are moaning in pain and begging for help.

Her attention is caught by a young girl, she is tied to the cords and hangs helplessly over the floor.

She cannot pass by her indifferently. She decides to take a chance and help her get out of there.

Furthermore, she looks around to make sure there is no guard nearby. On the floor, she places the photo has been holding so far in her hand and with deft movements unties the young woman, who falls directly on top of her out of helplessness.

She grabs the beaten girl around the waist and freezes when she hears the sound of a metal door. She leads the semi-conscious woman out as quickly as possible, completely forgetting about the photo. Furthermore, she wants to get out of there as soon as possible to save both of their lives.

And finally, she breathes a sigh of relief when she sees a giant door behind the next wall that leads to freedom. Despite her extreme exhaustion, she doesn't give up. She knows that this is her only chance...
