Tales from the Moon: Dragon Legends

Chapter 21: XXI. The Pain of Loss

Commander Sur'Xhe with his group and the few survivors were celebrating their victory, despite the surprises and losses, they were the ones who were victorious in that battle. Fate was in their favor and fortune on their side, although some felt bad about having to eliminate friends and colleagues who had been zombified by the curse of the zombies, it was hard enough losing someone in the field of battle, but killing your partner, that was a kind of pain and loss that not everyone was used to or prepared to face. For some of the warriors, this type of combat would leave them marked for life, but for most this would be just one of many battles, living or dying was always the same in each mission, whether zombies or not; Alexandra looked around her, she was seeing how many had lost their lives and how only those who survived were happy to continue living and she could not blame them, even she was grateful for continuing to breathe and having avoided any attempt at death to take her life.

Alexandre's hand and some areas of the body hurt a lot from the cuts she had received from the enemy, she was already used to the injuries, but these were more painful than she had experienced in the past. A sword had pierced her hand and she even she felt that terrible pain as if there were a live fire in the palm of her bare hand. She handled this by bandaging her, even so, she had to evaluate and close the cut of her hand, however, she smiled proud of herself to fight with the courage and pride of a dragon.

"Alexandra, go get those wounds treated, you've earned a little rest" affirmed the dragon.

She doubts the idea, she was somewhat suspicious of any dragon that she did not know well, dragons like her mother, Ssaull and Kaipo, Alexandra could perfectly trust them and in the case of her commander a little of her for having her. protected. But if a healer, or if some other dragon who was there with her tried something from her, she wouldn't be willing to give him a chance to catch her off guard.

"Did you hear me, Alexandra? If you hope to heal her hand and the other cuts, you must go to the healers" he says again.

"Ah my commander, with all due respect to you and his order I would like not to go with anyone at this time"

"Does she worry about being betrayed and killed by someone?" he asked bluntly.

"You saw it yourself, one of us tried to kill me when he thought I was vulnerable"

"Certainly, but if you do not treat that wound that is on your hand, it can become infected and you would have to cut it to avoid the risk of spreading" she reacts worried about that possibility. "If you are so worried, I can accompany you at all times"

She still thinks about it and still doubts if she gave herself that opportunity to be cared for by another dragon that could be a potential threat to her life, she did not want to take another risk because of trusting the wrong dragon. However, she would have the support of the commander and certainly, she could not doubt in his confidence, if he had wanted her dead, had helped, or let them kill her.

"The truth is that I would rather have my mother or Kaipo close by, I don't want to offend him, it's just that I have known them for a large part of my life and I would feel safer with one of them around. But thank you very much for your concern" she said showing a lot of respect in his words.

"I understand it, I know that I cannot force you to trust me, trust is earned, it is not required," he says calmly and being very understanding.

"Thanks for understanding" she smiles gratefully that he understood.

"Alexandra!" An ocean dragon approaches where Alexandre and Sur'Xhe were.

"What happens?" she takes her sword even while on the defensive.

"It's Kaipo!" Hearing that name, her face quickly changed to one of concern.

She ran alongside the dragon and her commander who wanted to support her, and thus, to make sure that she did not fall into another trap of a dragon that wanted to eliminate her, Alexandra had forgotten that she had to be careful of traps or aggressions towards her person, she was more worried about that dragon whom he respected and loved very much. Upon reaching the site she saw her friend lying on the ground, she was vomiting blood and her veins seemed to turn a dark color, she was trembling a little.

"What happened?" she asks her on the verge of tears.

"He was bitten by a zombie and now it's only a matter of time before he turns" explains a healer looking at the human.

Nobody could do anything, nor could they approach the dragon for fear of the risk of becoming infected. She gets a little closer to seeing her friend who seemed to be suffering from the curse, she hurt seeing him in that state. The captain of Kaipo approaches the place wondering about the commotion, it seemed that he was not aware of the situation of some of the boys from his guild.

"What's going on here? Why is everyone gathered?" Upon reaching the center, that dragon did not need explanations because when he saw Kaipo agonize and writhe in pain, he understood everything. "Why didn't anyone run it?" he claimed to know.

"Because he saved me at the cost of his life, and as an act of payment he wanted to say goodbye to his friend before" Drigielix didn't even finish stating the obvious.

"Nonsense we must take care of him before ...." He was quickly stopped by Commander Sur'Xhe indicating with his head to let him have that farewell.

Alexandra seeing the approval of the commander of her approaches her as much as she can to Kaipo without touching him or being too close to her for her blood to touch her, the young dragon smiles when he sees her again although the vision of her he became weak. She just kneels taking off her helmet and returning the smile even though she felt sad inside.

"Hey, you were on time," he said glad to see his friend. "It seems that everything is over for me" the dragon laughs a little, but that caused him to cough up some blood.

"Kaipo .." was all she said, she didn't know what to say to her friend who died.

"Easy friend there is nothing we can do, even so, I am satisfied to have fought here and endured long enough to see my best friend one last time" when saying that, the human could not help but shed her tears for her friend. I always imagine that it would be her to die first than Kaipo, at the end of her account, everyone hated her and as a result of that hatred, I always imagine that she would die for some treacherous dragon. "Commander Sur'Xhe would like my reward to go to her," he said, pointing weakly at the human.

"How? Kaipo that money should be from the guild!" growled the captain.

"Not!" the captain is surprised at this outburst "After paying fifteen percent of my profit to the guild fund, I want the rest of it to go to her"

"I will make sure that she receives your reward until the last coin," Sur'Xhe directs his gaze to the captain of Kaipo "and to you, do not worry I will take care of paying you that fifteen percent of it so that there are no losses to the fund of the guild.

Many dragons whispered about what they just heard, the human would receive double the reward than the rest of them, it did not seem fair to them, for their eyes an insect-like her did not deserve the juicy reward that she had in the first place herself and much less Kaipo's bounty. Even if many died, their rewards would be donated to the guild fund or a family member of their choice so that their death would not be felt in vain, and now Alexandra had more of a resource for herself thanks to her friend, but that did not matter to her. She was not interested in winning more or less or the same as the others if it meant losing her best friend.

"I know you'll be sad, but hey friend, this is part of being a warrior" he began to cough again and each time his cough sounded worse and his eyes began to spill blood, completely losing his ability to see, even so, he would continue to resist until told her friend what she had to say. "Promise me ... promise me that you will never give up and that you won't let any other dragon make you feel less Alex...andra, promise"

She only nods sadly and not being able to contain any more tears inside her, the dragon no longer being able to see indicated with a hand a signal for a female of the terrestrial to give Alexandra a memory of her friend, it was her lucky necklace. The same one that he received from the human when they first met, that female dragon gives the necklace to the human and you could see that he was as sad as she about the situation. Kaipo says goodbye with an I love you to her friend which she responded the same only for him to convulse and cough one last time before remaining completely still, he had finally died and now they had to take care of him.

"Alexandra it is time to take care of him before he begins to be dangerous for all of us," Sur'Xhe said in an understanding and kind way to which she nodded sadly. Alexandre was grateful to have known him and to be friends with such a good dragon, she moved away from her so that the terrestrial dragons burned her body. "You can burn it now" he indicated to the dragons who only spat fire at Kaipo's body.

"Am, do you need me to help you with your injuries?" asked the same dragon, but Alexandra seemed not to be listening because she did not react to her question.

"Alexandra tends to your wounds first and then takes a little time to cry for your friend," said the commander to the human.

"Commander I appreciate the concern, but I .."

"I don't want to repeat it by making it a direct order, I want to respect your pain and loss, but I can't ignore your wounds"

Sur'Xhe recites the same spell that he applied to the dragon that wanted to kill Alexandra, he wanted to find out if the terrestrial dragon had intentions to kill or betray the human, but the terrestrial dragon responds without fear that he only wanted to help the friend of Kaipo. The female dragon appreciated Kaipo and was as good a friend to him as Alexandra, she would do anything for her friend and one of those was to treat the human's wounds if she had any of her.

The human girl obeyed, downcast and unwilling to oppose the commander, she wanted to be alone to continue crying for her friend, but she went to a camp with the healer to tend to the wounds. That female was kind to her, she was able with a spell and some potions to heal the terrible cut and close the wound in such a way that it seemed that it had never happened, Alexandra was surprised at the level that the healers could treat the wounds, she clenched her fist several times and he felt no pain at all. Once everything was in order with her injuries, that female says goodbye and leaves to leave Alexandra alone in the camp to vent, she thanked her for that and asked the name of the healer so that her gratitude would be better to which the female replied with Rulu. Now being able to be alone, the human covers her face with her hands and cries louder than ever for losing her friend, it was difficult enough to make friends being the only human in the different kingdoms and Kaipo was undoubtedly the best friend than her. she had found and now without him around, she felt devastated and in a way a little lonely.

Commander Sur'Xhe thanked Rulu for her services and her support, pointed out that she should rest, that he would be in charge of guarding the human's tent to make sure she was not in danger during that moment of weakness. He could hear her cry, he could hear every time her nose ran into a runny nose and how her voice was torn, in part every warrior understood it hurts to lose a loved one in combat and by putting himself in her place, he could better understand why the loss of his best friend was more painful, not so much the fact that Kaipo was the human's best friend, but possibly losing one of the few dragons who saw her as his equal. She did not imagine that he must feel hated by many, but if she understood what it must feel like to lose someone who made you feel valued and loved.
