Tangled in Desire

Chapter 2: Chapter 2: Fractured Reflections

The night wrapped itself around the city, its silence broken only by the distant honking of horns and the occasional rush of wind. Zara sat by her window, gazing out at the glittering skyline, but her mind was far from the present. The memories surfaced unbidden, pulling her into a past she rarely allowed herself to revisit.

It was a rainy night, years ago, when she first realized the fragility of the life her family had built. Zara was ten, Jade only five. They had fled their father's cold, oppressive house with nothing but a hastily packed suitcase and their mother's whispered promise: We'll be safe.

The relative they stayed with was kind but poor, and life was far from easy. The house was a cramped, two-room apartment that barely held the weight of their hopes, let alone their growing fears. Zara had stepped into the role of protector early, shielding Jade from the brunt of their struggles. She'd distract her sister with made-up bedtime stories, silly jokes, and dreams of a life where the two of them would conquer the world together.

But even Zara couldn't shield Jade from everything. She remembered the night their mother broke down in the kitchen, the bill collectors pounding on the door. Zara had tried to comfort her, but at ten, she could only do so much.

"It's my fault," her mother had whispered, clutching Zara's hands tightly. Her once-bright eyes were dull with exhaustion. "I should've left him sooner. I should've—"

"Mom, stop," Zara had interrupted firmly, her voice stronger than she felt. "We're going to be fine. We'll figure this out."

Her mother had nodded, but Zara knew the weight of their circumstances crushed her. The next morning, their mother left early, claiming she had a job interview. She didn't return until well after midnight, her clothes soaked from the rain. Zara didn't ask questions, but she noticed the sudden influx of groceries and the paid rent.

For months, her mother kept them afloat through whatever work she could find, but the strain began to show. Her laughter became rarer, her smiles forced. Zara took up odd jobs herself, sneaking out early before school and returning late at night. She never told Jade the extent of their struggles, even when the other kids at school mocked her for wearing the same worn shoes or for skipping lunch because they couldn't afford it.

One night, as the rain poured outside, Zara had come home to find Jade curled up on the couch, clutching a torn piece of paper. It was a letter from their father, demanding they return or face legal consequences. Jade's face was streaked with tears.

"I don't want to go back," she had sobbed. "I don't want to."

Zara knelt beside her, wrapping her in a tight embrace. "We won't," she promised fiercely. "I'll never let that happen."

And she didn't. Zara fought for years, taking on every challenge, every hardship, just to make sure Jade had a shot at a better life. It wasn't until she was twenty that Zara finally broke free of her father's reach, using the little savings she had to move to a different city. Jade was fifteen by then, full of the dreams Zara had helped keep alive despite everything.

Zara's gaze returned to the city lights, a small, bittersweet smile tugging at her lips. She had built an empire from those struggles, turning every pain into fuel for her success. But no matter how high she climbed, the shadows of her past lingered, reminding her of the girl who had promised her sister a better life.

A knock at the door startled her from her thoughts. "Zara? You okay?" It was Mia, her other assistant.

"I'm fine," Zara replied, quickly wiping away the tear that had escaped down her cheek. She turned, her expression cool and composed once more. "Just… thinking."

Mia hesitated, sensing there was more to Zara's mood but knowing better than to press. "Alright. Let me know if you need anything."

As the door clicked shut, Zara leaned back in her chair, letting out a slow breath. The memories had their place, but this wasn't the time to dwell. She had a deal to close, a world to conquer, and a sister's promise to uphold.
