Chapter 41: Weight of the Battlefield

The fight began with an explosion of movement. Furōkawa lunged forward, Onamazu shifting seamlessly into its whip-like form, Basilix, with a crackle of cursed energy. The whip lashed out, its edges gleaming dangerously as it sliced through the air, aiming for Sigrun's exposed flanks. She met the attack with a flick of her massive sword, Excalibur, the impact reverberating like thunder across the battlefield.

Sigrun's golden eyes widened briefly, a glimmer of surprise crossing her face. "You're stronger than I expected," she said, her voice calm yet tinged with amusement. "Good."

Furōkawa said nothing, his focus razor-sharp as he maneuvered around her. With a swift motion, Basilix curled around Sigrun's sword arm, but before he could tighten its grip, she twisted her body, her massive golden bladed wings unfurling with a burst of radiant energy. The whip was deflected as the wings snapped back into place, protecting her in a brilliant display of strength and precision.

Sigrun launched her counterattack. She swung Excalibur in a wide arc, the blade moving with terrifying speed and precision. The sheer weight of the slash forced Furōkawa to shift Onamazu into Oryx, its axe form, to block. The clash sent shockwaves rippling through the ground beneath them, and Furōkawa gritted his teeth as his knees buckled slightly under the force.

"You can barely stand against me," Sigrun teased, her tone gleeful. "But you're still standing. Impressive."

Furōkawa pushed back, his cursed energy flaring as he shifted into a new tactic. He thrust his hand into the ground, summoning Spears of Putrefaction, blackened spears erupting in a circle around Sigrun. They shot toward her from all angles, their corrupted energy hissing through the air.

Sigrun's wings spread wide, and with a sharp motion, she spun in place. Her wings glinted with cursed energy, slicing through the incoming spears like paper. She followed up with a rapid movement, one of her golden wings snapping forward and firing a barrage of smaller blades at Furōkawa.

Furōkawa activated Haze and Catalyst, his cursed energy condensing into a swirling mist that surrounded him. The golden blades tore through the haze, but their trajectory was thrown off, narrowly missing their target. Using the cover, Furōkawa dashed to her side, Onamazu shifting back into Basilix. The whip lashed out, wrapping around her ankle, and with a grunt of effort, he pulled her off balance.

But Sigrun recovered almost instantly, her wings propelling her upward as she slashed downward with Excalibur. The radiant energy of the blade cut through the haze, dissipating it in an instant. Furōkawa raised Oryx to block, but the force of her attack sent him skidding backward, his boots digging deep furrows into the earth.

"Still holding back?" Sigrun asked, her voice lilting with excitement. "Don't. Show me everything you have!"

Furōkawa snarled, flipping Oryx in his grip before charging again. The massive axe swung in a wide arc, forcing Sigrun to dodge. He feinted, shifting Onamazu mid-swing into Basilix, the whip snapping toward her exposed side. She deflected it with her wings, but Furōkawa was already moving, closing the distance with a precision strike.

Their weapons clashed repeatedly, the sound of steel on steel echoing across the field. Sigrun's movements were fluid and relentless, a seamless blend of her sword and wings that left little room for Furōkawa to breathe. Still, he fought with everything he had, weaving between offense and defense, his cursed techniques pushing her more than she had anticipated.

After nearly thirty minutes of intense combat, Furōkawa felt something—a shift in the atmosphere. The air grew heavier, colder, and an indescribable weight seemed to press down on his chest. He faltered mid-strike, his cursed energy flickering for a moment as his senses screamed in alarm.

Sigrun noticed immediately, her golden eyes narrowing as she deflected his attack and stepped back. "You feel it too, your perception is incredible," she said, her voice quieter, her excitement momentarily replaced by solemnity.

Furōkawa straightened, his brow furrowed. "What is it? What's happening?"

Sigrun's wings folded slightly as she studied him. Then she said, almost as if to herself, "The Six Eyes… has vanished from this world."

Her words hit Furōkawa like a freight train. His mind raced, confusion and dread twisting in his mind. "What do you mean? Vanished? That's not possible—"

Sigrun raised her voice, cutting him off. "Focus, Furōkawa! You're here to fight me, not to dwell on matters beyond your reach." She stepped forward, Excalibur glowing faintly. "If your resolve falters, you will fall."

But Furōkawa couldn't shake the unease that clawed at his mind. The weight of her statement bore down on him, distracting him as they clashed again. His movements became sloppy, his strikes lacking the precision they had before.

Sigrun's wings flared outward, creating a blinding light that forced Furōkawa to shield his eyes. She stepped back, lowering Excalibur, her expression sharp with annoyance.

"Enough."

Furōkawa blinked, disoriented. "What—?"

She pointed her blade at him, her voice cutting through the haze of his thoughts. "Get a hold of yourself, warrior. I agreed to a glorious battle, not whatever this is. If your mind is elsewhere, you'll only disgrace yourself with death."

Her words stung, but they brought Furōkawa back to the present. He took a deep breath, steadying himself. "You're right," he admitted. "I'm sorry. I let it distract me."

Sigrun tilted her head, her expression softening slightly. "Good. Now stop holding back. Show me the strength you ended my sisters with."

Furōkawa's eyes hardened, his resolve reigniting. He took a deep breath, and his cursed energy flared to life, stronger and brighter than before. With a thought, he broke the Binding Vow that limited his power, unleashing his full strength for five minutes. The air around him shimmered with raw energy, his aura pulsing with a renewed intensity.

Sigrun's eyes widened slightly, and the silhouette of a smile spread across her face. "That's more like it."

Onamazu glowed in his hand as it shifted seamlessly between Basilix and Oryx, Furōkawa testing the limits of his unleashed power. His stance was steady, his focus absolute. The tension between them grew, the battlefield crackling with their combined energy.

Without a word, they charged at each other, their respective weapons colliding in a burst of light and sound that shook the ground beneath them.
