The Antarctic Expedition

Chapter 13: The mantis hunt

The group gathered around the small campfire, its flames crackling softly in the early morning light. The air was thick with tension as they discussed their plan. Alex, though still weak from his injury, sat propped up against a tree, his voice steady as he addressed them.

"We're low on options," Alex began, his eyes moving across the group. "That naga won't go down without a fight, and we can't use fire without risking our own lives. So, the only choice we have left is to make those blades and cut our way through its vines."

Ryan nodded, taking in Alex's words. He had been thinking about the hunt all night. The image of the giant praying mantis Lena had described kept flashing in his mind—its sharp claws, its speed, and the way it effortlessly sliced through everything in its path. If they could harness that power, they might stand a chance.

"I'll lead the hunt," Ryan said, stepping forward. "Kenji, mia, Tom, Lena—you're with me. Rebecca, Mark, you two stay here and set up the forge. We'll need it ready as soon as we get back."

Kenji gave a nod, cracking his knuckles. "Let's bring down those mantises."

Emily, who had been quiet up to this point, handed Ryan a small pouch filled with medical supplies. "Just in case," she said softly. Ryan took it with a grateful nod, appreciating the gesture. The group began to gather their gear, preparing for the hunt. Alex, despite his injuries, spoke up once more.

"Remember," Alex said, his voice firm. "Work together. Watch each other's backs. We can't afford to lose anyone else."

With those words, they set off into the dense jungle, leaving Alex and the rest behind to prepare for the next stage.

The Mantis Hunt Begins

The jungle was alive with sound—chirping insects, rustling leaves, and the distant calls of unseen creatures. The group moved carefully, weapons ready, eyes scanning the dense undergrowth for any sign of their prey. Ryan led the way, his senses heightened by the danger that surrounded them.

They soon encountered various oversized insects—centipedes the size of dogs and beetles with armored shells. But these creatures, though intimidating, weren't what they were after. As they moved deeper into the jungle, the signs of mantis activity became more apparent.

Ryan crouched down, examining a set of massive footprints embedded in the soft earth. Nearby, a half-eaten carcass of a large rodent lay discarded, its body sliced cleanly in two. The sight sent a chill down his spine.

"They're close," Ryan whispered, standing up and motioning for the others to stay alert.

First Encounter

After another twenty minutes of careful movement, they spotted it—a giant praying mantis perched on a low-hanging branch, its body blending seamlessly with the surrounding foliage. Its claws were as long as swords, and its eyes, unblinking and alien, scanned the area.

Kenji was the first to move, stepping forward to draw the mantis's attention. As he did, mia and Tom took aim from a distance, their weapons trained on the creature.

The mantis reacted with lightning speed, leaping from the branch and landing in front of Kenji with a ground-shaking thud. Its claws slashed through the air, forcing Kenji to dive out of the way.

"Now!" Ryan shouted, signaling mia and Tom.

They fired in unison, their bullets striking the mantis's exoskeleton with little effect. The creature hissed, its eyes narrowing as it prepared to strike again.

Teamwork and Victory

Realizing the mantis's exoskeleton was tougher than they anticipated, Ryan quickly formulated a new plan. "Kenji, keep it busy! Lena, try to find a weak spot!"

Kenji nodded, grabbing a nearby fallen branch and using it to fend off the mantis's strikes. He moved with surprising agility, dodging the creature's lethal claws. Meanwhile, Lena circled around, her eyes scanning for any vulnerabilities.

"There!" Lena shouted. "Its underbelly looks softer!"

Kenji, hearing this, took a risk. He let the mantis close in, then at the last second, he dropped to the ground, rolling beneath it. The mantis, momentarily confused, exposed its underbelly.

"mia, now!" Ryan called out.

mia fired a shot that hit the mark, causing the mantis to screech in pain. Kenji seized the opportunity, rising to his feet and plunging a makeshift spear into the creature's vulnerable underbelly. With a final, desperate screech, the mantis collapsed, its body twitching before going still.

The group took a moment to catch their breath, the adrenaline still pumping through their veins. They had done it—they had taken down their first mantis.

Forging the Blades

Back at the camp, Rebecca and Mark had set up a makeshift forge using the materials they had scavenged. When the hunting party returned with the mantis parts, the two immediately got to work.

The process was grueling. They had to carefully strip the mantis's claws of their outer shell, revealing the dense, sharp bone beneath. The fire roared as they heated the mantis bones, hammering them into shape. It was exhausting work, with the group taking turns to keep the forge going.

Despite the intense focus required, the atmosphere around the camp was lighter than it had been in days. As they worked, the group found moments to joke and laugh, the camaraderie bringing them closer together. Even Kenji, usually reserved, couldn't resist joining in as he flexed his muscles and made exaggerated poses while lifting the heavy mantis parts.

By the time night fell, they had forged several sharp blades. They tested them on nearby vines, watching in satisfaction as the blades sliced through effortlessly. The group felt a renewed sense of hope, knowing they now had a weapon that could give them an edge against the naga.

Ending with a New Threat

As they celebrated their success, Emily, who had been keeping watch, suddenly froze. In the distance, barely visible in the dim light, a shadow moved through the trees—a massive figure, larger than anything they had seen before.

"Something's out there," Emily whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

The group fell silent, the joy of their recent victory quickly fading into tension. Whatever was out there, it wasn't friendly.
