Chapter 20: The dryads endgame
The group struggled against the relentless vines that bound them, the thick tendrils tightening with every movement. mia's breath came in sharp gasps as she twisted her body, trying to wriggle free. Tom strained against his restraints, his face contorted with frustration. Nearby, Emily fought desperately, her hands slipping as she tried to pry the vines from her wrists.
Amid the chaos, something cold slipped from her grasp. "The stone!" Emily gasped as the precious artifact tumbled from her fingers, hitting the ground with a dull thud.
Ryan's eyes snapped to the stone as it skittered across the ground, and the dryad's voice slithered into his mind. "Pick it up, Ryan. Smash it, now!" The command was irresistible, pressing against his thoughts like a vice. He moved as if in a trance, his fingers closing around the smooth surface of the stone.
"Ryan, don't!" Emily's voice was filled with desperation, but it was too late. With a swift motion, Ryan brought the stone down hard against a rock, shattering it into a thousand pieces. An unnatural, green light flared from the fragments as the dryad's presence flooded into him, taking control.
Ryan's body jerked, his movements no longer his own. His eyes, once filled with confusion and regret, now glowed with a malevolent green hue. The dryad's voice, now spoken through Ryan, was cold and full of malice. "Now, let's deal with the rest of you before I tear that seed out of Alex and devour it, so nothing can ever seal me again."
Hidden in the bushes nearby, Alex clenched his fists, heart pounding in his chest. He had heard everything, the dryad's words chilling him to the core. His body was still weak, but adrenaline surged through him, pushing him to act. He couldn't let the dryad's plan succeed.
Emily's eyes scanned the surrounding area, hoping against hope. Then, she spotted a flicker of movement—Alex, creeping through the underbrush. Relief and worry washed over her in equal measure. Keeping her voice steady, she began speaking, trying to draw the dryad's attention. "You're making a mistake, Dryad. Even if you kill us, do you really think you can just take over this world?"
The dryad, through Ryan, sneered. "Foolish girl. None of you can stop me." But the dryad's focus had shifted, just as Emily intended. It didn't notice Alex creeping closer, mantis blades in hand.
With a sudden burst of energy, Alex launched himself from the bushes, his hand darting out to snatch the artifact necklace from around Ryan's neck. The dryad recoiled in shock, losing its grip on Ryan's body momentarily.
"You think this little trinket can stop me?" the dryad hissed, regaining control of Ryan and sending a barrage of thick, thorny vines at Alex. "You won't even get close enough to use it!"
But Alex was ready. With the mantis blades, he sliced through the oncoming vines, the sharp edges cutting through the plant matter like butter. He fought his way forward, step by agonizing step, his body taking hits from the dryad's wooden shards, leaving bruises and cuts across his skin.
Realizing its vines were ineffective, the dryad staggered back, panic creeping into its voice. "Stay back! You won't—" But before it could finish, Alex surged forward, determination blazing in his eyes. He rushed toward the group, intending to free Kenji and mia to help in the fight. But the dryad was quicker, raising a thick wall of wood around them, sealing them off.
"Enough!" Alex shouted, turning his full focus on the dryad. Bruised and battered, he pushed through the dryad's final defenses, ignoring the searing pain as wooden shards cut into his skin. He was close now, close enough to end it. But how? The artifact was circular, not sharp. It couldn't be used like a weapon.
Then, it struck him. The dryad's mouth—the source of its voice, the origin of its control. With a final, desperate lunge, Alex forced the artifact into the dryad's mouth. The dryad's eyes went wide with shock as the artifact activated, sealing its power. The vines holding the group fell limp, and the wooden walls crumbled to the ground.
For a brief, terrifying moment, the artifact remained lodged in the dryad's mouth. Then, suddenly, it was coughed up, falling to the ground. Alex's heart sank. "Is it still…?"
But as he looked closer, he saw tears streaming down Ryan's face. "I… I'm so sorry, Alex," Ryan choked out, his voice trembling with guilt. "I let it get to me… I almost…"
Alex, exhausted but resolute, placed a hand on Ryan's shoulder. "Don't worry about it. We're in this together. We always have been."
The tension broke as Alex's body, finally succumbing to the stress and injuries, went limp. He collapsed, unconscious, as the rest of the group rushed to his side.
