Chapter 25: The escape
The crackling campfire threw flickering shadows across the faces of both groups, casting an eerie glow on their tired expressions. Ryan's team, still on edge from the day's battle, listened cautiously as Zara's team spoke in low tones about their journey to the island. Ryan exchanged a wary glance with Emily, noticing the careful way Zara's gaze lingered on him. There was something unsettling about it—an intensity that made his skin crawl.
"So, you knew about the temple?" Emily asked, trying to keep her tone casual.
Zara nodded, a cryptic smile playing on her lips. "Oh, there are legends about this place. Powerful legends. And artifacts—like that one you found in the temple—that supposedly hold the key to 'unlocking paths that others can't see.'" Her gaze sharpened, zeroing in on Ryan. "I imagine it's quite a burden, carrying something so… significant."
Ryan tensed, feeling his pulse quicken as he realized Zara wasn't as unaware as they'd hoped. She seemed to know more about the naga's artifact than she let on. But why? And what exactly did she want?
After a few more strained minutes around the fire, Ryan took a chance to step away, claiming he needed some air. The cool night air hit his face as he wandered toward the edge of camp, but his brief moment of relief vanished when he heard footsteps following him.
Turning, he saw Zara's figure silhouetted in the firelight, her eyes glinting with interest. "Ryan," she called softly, her voice smooth and confident, "I wanted to have a word."
He stopped, careful to keep his expression neutral. "What about?"
Zara stepped closer, her gaze unreadable. "The artifact. The one you took from the temple. I'm sure you've noticed… it isn't just any relic." She paused, as if testing his reaction. "Some say it holds a power that can reveal things hidden in the island's heart."
Ryan forced a calm nod, keeping his responses measured. "I hadn't heard that," he lied.
Zara's eyes narrowed, a slight smirk tugging at the corner of her mouth. "Interesting. Well, I'm sure you'll figure it out soon enough." She gave a slight nod and walked back to the camp, leaving Ryan with a mix of frustration and unease. There was no mistaking her curiosity—Zara's team was after something specific. Something they believed was linked to the naga's artifact.
Returning to the fire, Ryan pulled Emily, Kenji, and mia aside, their faces tight with worry as he recounted Zara's words. "I don't think they're just here by coincidence," he finished, his voice a tense whisper. "They know something about the artifact, and they're clearly interested in what it can do."
Emily clenched her fists, her voice barely above a murmur. "If they're interested in the artifact, then there's something more to it. Maybe it can unlock something inside the temple."
The group fell silent, the weight of that possibility sinking in. Ryan could feel the intensity in each of their gazes; they all understood what needed to be done. "Tonight," he whispered. "We're going back to the temple. And we're finding out what this artifact really does."
When the camp quieted and Zara's team seemed settled, Ryan's group slipped into the darkness. They moved silently, navigating the jungle's thick foliage until the temple loomed before them in the moonlight, its stones worn yet somehow menacing. In the shadowy silence, they made their way to the hidden gate, the artifact pulsing faintly in Ryan's grip.
With a steadying breath, he held the artifact against the gate, feeling a strange energy course through his hand. Slowly, the stone began to glow, illuminating symbols they hadn't seen before, and with a low rumble, the gate slid open, revealing a dimly lit passageway beyond.
Emily shot Ryan a glance, her voice hushed. "Are we sure about this?"
He nodded, taking a step forward. "It's now or never."
The passage was narrow, lined with worn murals depicting ancient creatures and symbols that seemed to tell a story, though none of them could fully understand it. They pressed on, the air thick and ancient, until they reached a grand chamber bathed in a strange blue light. At the center of the room stood a statue holding an empty, circular socket—one that looked like it could perfectly fit the naga's artifact.
Ryan's fingers tightened around the artifact as he glanced at the others. They were so close to understanding the island's mysteries, but the nagging suspicion of Zara's presence loomed over him. The hair on his neck prickled, and he gestured for the group to stay alert.
Just then, a faint echo of footsteps from the passageway behind them sent a shock through their group. Ryan whipped around, his heart pounding as they listened in tense silence, realizing they weren't alone.
"Come on," he whispered. "We need to get out of here—now."
In hurried, hushed movements, the group retraced their steps, hoping to avoid a confrontation. The artifact pulsed in Ryan's hand as they pushed through the temple's twisting corridors, finally breaking free into the jungle once more. The night air felt thick, filled with tension as they made their way back to camp, hoping they hadn't been followed.
As they settled, Ryan looked back toward the temple's shadowy silhouette, his mind racing with thoughts of what they'd uncovered—and the uneasy feeling that Zara and her team wouldn't be far behind.
