Chapter 25: Ambushed From Behind
The smell of ash, the pools of blood, and the rivers of despair permeate the surrounding area. Explosions, the clashing of steel and flesh, and screams of anguish and horror echoed through the still crimson night.
Twilight of the Red Moon, its name was, and the illumination turned into the hue of a rose as monsters of bygone eras came lusting for the flesh of the living. There is not a single thing in this world that a name would fit so well. Increased strength it was, but the most dangerous was the possession of complete sentient intelligence.
Many theories surfaced, but none was able to prove it. After all, what kind of insane person would dare prove what they have thought up? Especially when death is evident the farther you venture from the footsteps of your own home.
As the fire spread from neighborhood to neighborhood, more families became desperate, and they felt the need to get out as soon as possible. Thus, even though they knew it was a bad idea, they packed up their stuff and moved out, for them to only be killed in cold blood. Unfortunately, even in death, they were not able to rest as they started to rise up from the dead.
With that, they lost all their memory, and the new consciousness took over. The dead members rose up and attacked their very own families, from their own mothers and fathers to even their younger siblings, and those so young were also not spared.
Their fears have now turned into a complete horror, as their once loved ones soon assault them, even to the point of death. Such a romantic vow, they say. "Till Death Do Us Part," was taken quite too literally in this sense. Nowadays, in this world, such a romantic vow in the church usually brings bad or unfortunate karma. Which, unfortunately, was true for this family that perished.
The situation was desperate; by this time, the guards and soldiers that were stationed on other fronts were now relocated once again to defend the entire city at this point.
A young man of short stature was about to leave the place that he was designated to him. He was planning on moving over to where the battle was happening to help with the defense. With that in mind, he glanced from left to right to check his surroundings, trying to make sure that everything was still all right and that they would not be fighting with their backs open.
Upon seeing that there was nothing to fear, he brought his sword that he brandished earlier back in his hilts and proceeded to move onto the ladder and move down. However, as he was moving down, a loud, fiery explosion came above him; he was shocked and trembled in fear.
As he went down, he lost control and stumbled down the stairs. Confused, he tried to make out the situation, and when his eyes darted to the opening above the staircase, he was shocked beyond death; there were multiple shadows moving about. He was only able to see shadows, as the movements were a little too fast for him to make out with his own eyes.
His eyes darted around in a panic, and when he regained his footing, he strode outside and brandished his sword. He looked up, trying to see where the ghouls were heading. He was planning on chasing them down. Unfortunately, a ghoul saw his movements and jumped from atop a structure.
The man was able to sense the danger and was able to dodge in time. With a firm grip on his sword, he swung it with precision, which the ghoul ignored. Confused by the ghoul, he began to swing with anger, which the ghoul ignored. Fortunately, something broke him out of his fury, as a scream echoed through his ears.
He glanced from left to right, all the while holding his sword pointed at the ghoul. The ghoul took advantage of this and countered, but he was not deterred as he merely jumped back as the ghoul swung its hands towards him, intending to stab his open area, which the armor did not cover.
It seemed like the intelligence of the ghouls was increasing; they had not acted this much intelligently, even from a year ago. Luckily, the red moon only appears a year; if it appears monthly, then they are in for a hell of a ride.
Even when he looked from side to side, he was not able to determine the location of the scream; with a heavy heart, he swung his sword with precision, silently thanking the girl who had screamed earlier for bringing him back to reality. Even though she does not know she saved him by screaming, she is most likely dead now, so he silently prayed for her soul.
Even when he was praying, he never left reality. He was still engaged in an intense battle with a ghoul. In the past, a soldier like him could kill multiple ghouls, but now he was having a hard time killing a single one? How shameful can one be? Thus, he swung his sword with more dedication and precision.
Fortunately, his time came when the ghoul was suddenly caught off guard, and he was able to stab his sword in the chest of the ghoul. It might not kill it, yes, but he had a secret weapon, and that was a dagger.
He plunged his sword inwards so that the ghoul would not be able to move; the ghoul was confused but was not able to react properly when he moved his hands to his back and swiftly brought out a knife and stabbed its head.
With grime and blood splattered all over him, he pulled both of his weapons from the ghoul as it fell lifelessly onto the ground. He brought the sword back in its scabbard and moved on. Unfortunately as he was about to move, an explosion rocked far from his sides, and with it, it threw a gigantic wood piece and struck him in the head. He fell down to the ground and fell unconscious, and soon as if fate was favoring him, a building near him collapsed, and various amounts of materials fell on him, but was not enough to crush him, thereby saving him from this fateful night.
