Chapter 16: Chapter 16 : Threads of Power
Kael stood frozen as Calder Venric stepped further into the artifact chamber, his dark robes trailing across the stone floor. The golden crystal pulsed faintly on its pedestal, its light reflected in Venric's piercing silver eyes.
"I'll admit," Venric said smoothly, his voice as sharp as a blade, "I didn't expect such boldness from you. But boldness without power is nothing more than foolishness."
Kael's chest tightened. The golden thread pulsed in his chest, its energy steady but faint compared to the oppressive aura radiating from Venric.
"I'm not leaving without the crystal," Kael said, forcing his voice to remain steady.
Venric's lips curled into a smile, though there was no warmth in it. "You don't even know what it is, do you? The power it holds? The secrets it keeps? You're like a child playing with fire, boy."
Kael clenched his fists, the weight of the crystal's energy pressing down on him like a storm. "Maybe I don't understand it yet," he admitted. "But I know one thing—you're not the one who should have it."
Venric's eyes narrowed, and the shadows around him seemed to shift and writhe. "Such conviction," he said softly. "Let's see if it lasts."
With a flick of his wrist, Venric unleashed a wave of energy that tore through the room, the air crackling with arcane power. Kael barely had time to react. He raised his hands instinctively, and the golden thread flared brightly in response.
The energy struck an invisible barrier, shattering into sparks that dissipated into the air. Kael stumbled back, his chest heaving as the golden thread pulsed wildly.
"You've been touched by something… unusual," Venric said, his tone laced with curiosity. "A connection to the arcane unlike anything I've seen before. How fascinating."
Kael didn't respond. Instead, he focused on the thread, willing its energy to guide him. The warmth in his chest spread through his limbs, steadying his trembling hands.
"You're not taking another step," Kael said, his voice firm.
Venric chuckled darkly. "We'll see about that."
He raised his hands, and the shadows surged forward like living creatures, their tendrils snaking toward Kael with terrifying speed.
Outside the chamber, the battle raged on.
Ember growled as she dodged another swipe from the metallic beast, her flames blazing as she counterattacked. The guardian roared, its glowing eyes flaring as it absorbed the energy from her fire.
"This thing is relentless!" she snarled, her paws skidding on the stone floor.
Umbra darted around the creature's legs, his tendrils of shadow lashing out in an attempt to bind it. "I'm trying to slow it down!" he shouted, his small body trembling with effort.
The guardian roared again, breaking free of Umbra's restraints with a violent shake. Its claws raked across the floor, leaving deep gouges in the stone.
Lira appeared from the shadows, her daggers flashing as she struck at the creature's side. The blades glanced off its metallic hide, leaving only faint scratches.
"Great," she muttered, dodging a swipe from the beast's tail. "It's a walking fortress."
Ember growled, her flames dimming as she darted toward Lira. "We can't keep this up. Kael needs more time."
"Then we give it to him," Lira said firmly, her eyes narrowing.
The rogue leapt onto the guardian's back, her daggers plunging into the joints of its metallic armor. The creature roared, twisting and bucking in an attempt to throw her off.
"Now!" Lira shouted. "Hit it while it's distracted!"
Umbra let out a bark, and his shadows surged forward, wrapping tightly around the guardian's legs. Ember followed, releasing a burst of fire that struck the creature's head.
The guardian faltered, its movements growing sluggish as the combined assault began to take its toll.
"Hurry, Kael," Ember murmured, her fiery eyes glancing toward the chamber.
Inside, Kael dodged another wave of shadows, his pulse hammering in his ears. Venric's attacks were relentless, each strike more precise and powerful than the last.
"You're persistent, I'll give you that," Venric said, his voice calm despite the battle. "But persistence without strength is meaningless."
Kael gritted his teeth, the golden thread pulsing wildly in his chest. He could feel the crystal's energy resonating with the thread, its light growing brighter with each passing moment.
Focus, he told himself. Trust the thread.
Venric raised his hands again, and the shadows coiled around him like a living storm. "This ends now," he said, his voice echoing with power.
Kael closed his eyes, reaching for the golden thread with everything he had. The warmth spread through him like a tidal wave, and he felt the connection between himself and the crystal deepen.
When he opened his eyes, the crystal's light flared brightly, filling the room with a golden glow. The shadows recoiled, and Venric staggered back, his eyes wide with surprise.
"What…?" he murmured, his voice faltering.
Kael stepped forward, his hands steady as he reached for the crystal. "This doesn't belong to you," he said, his voice filled with quiet determination.
The moment his fingers touched the crystal, a surge of energy shot through him, brighter and more powerful than anything he had felt before. The golden thread pulsed in perfect harmony with the crystal, and Kael felt its power flood his senses.
Venric snarled, his composure slipping as he raised his hands to strike. But before he could attack, the crystal's light flared again, and a wave of golden energy erupted from the pedestal.
The force sent Venric crashing into the wall, his shadows dissipating into the air.
Kael staggered back, clutching the crystal tightly. The energy coursing through him was overwhelming, but he forced himself to focus.
"Ember! Umbra! Lira!" he shouted, his voice echoing through the chamber. "Let's go!"
Outside, the guardian faltered, its glowing eyes dimming as the wave of golden energy washed over it. Ember growled, darting forward to strike a final blow.
The creature let out a low, metallic groan before collapsing, its massive body still.
Lira slid off its back, breathing heavily. "That… was too close."
Umbra padded toward the chamber, his glowing blue eyes filled with urgency. "Kael's calling for us."
The group rushed toward the chamber, finding Kael standing at its center, the crystal clutched tightly in his hands. The golden light still pulsed faintly, illuminating the room with a warm glow.
"Let's move," Kael said, his voice firm. "Venric won't stay down for long."
Ember nodded, her flames flaring. "Agreed. We need to get out of here—fast."
As they fled the chamber, Kael couldn't help but glance back at the golden crystal in his hands. Its energy was unlike anything he had ever felt before, and he knew their journey was far from over.
But for now, they had won.
