Chapter 15: Chapter 15: Pride and Recklessness
In the Katakiel Empire, at the heart of Nordia Castle Prince Niolz, a demon with dark skin piercing yellow eyes and a humanoid form aged 29 strode briskly toward the throne room, satisfied with the recent news delivered by his subordinate.
Upon entering, he noticed several demons standing guard at the door, who promptly opened it for him. However, the throne was empty.
— What are you doing here, Niolz?
A playful voice broke the silence. He turned his head to find Ilphina, his 32-year-old elder sister, standing near one of the columns.
With an enchanting charm, she had cascading violet hair, lips of the same hue, an average build, and dark skin that accentuated her commanding aura.
Her long, pointed ears and piercing gaze exuded a calm strength, reinforced by an overwhelming presence.
Although Niolz was three years younger, he always found himself at odds with her their relationship was a mix of reluctant admiration and constant irritation, as Ilphina had the annoying habit of not taking him seriously.
— I'm looking for Father, Niolz declared, his tone exasperated. I have news about the progress of the subjugation of the Ednia kingdom.
Intrigued, Ilphina gave him a skeptical look.
— You know, neither Father nor I thought you'd go so far as to create an army and to engage the mercenairie orcs for dominate that island.
Her tone was calm, but her amused expression betrayed her lack of faith in her brother's ambitions.
In truth, Niolz had long aspired to seize the throne. Yet their father still considered him too young and inexperienced.
One day, during an intense discussion, Niolz had proposed a bold deal: if he could conquer the island kingdom of Ednia, his father would abdicate in his favor. Against all expectations, their father had agreed.
Niolz chuckled, a shadow of a smug smile on his lips.
— Power grants privileges to the strong, he said confidently. Father should have subdued the humans long ago. They're no more dangerous than dragons.
His words were laced with arrogance. He turned to leave the room.
— I'll return when he's present, he added, crossing the doorway.
Ilphina watched him go, thoughtful. She had never seen the point of this conflict with the humans. To her, the dragon kingdom posed a much greater and more strategic threat.
She reflected on recent battle reports, noting that while the demons had indeed occupied part of the island, everything seemed too easy. A thought occurred to her: The humans must be preparing a counteroffensive. No nation allows itself to be subjugated without fierce resistance.
A sly smile formed on her lips.
— It seems you're headed for a crushing failure, dear little brother.
She silently relished the thought, eager to hear the next reports from the conflict, savoring in advance the impending downfall of the one who fancied himself a future king.
