Chapter 20: Chapter 20: In the Darkness
Night had fallen cloaking the Kiot family Manor in the heart of this imposing yet Big residence Philippe Kiot a stocky bald old man with a malevolent demeanor with his older son Roy in the opulent confines of his office.
The room richly adorned with heavy wooden furniture and golden chandeliers seemed prepared for a celebration fine wine exquisite dishes and desserts were meticulously arranged on a long table.
Yet this feast was nothing more than a façade, concealing Philippe's bitterness.
With a sudden violent motion he overturned his goblet of wine the crimson liquid splashed against the wall leaving a scarlet stain reminiscent of blood.
In a fit of rage he swept the table clean with his arm sending utensils and plates crashing to the floor in a metallic clatter.
"Cursed Ednia family!" he roared his eyes bloodshot with fury. "They survived, those wretches! Their victory over the demons is an insult to my ambition!"
Roy his calculating young son, put his hand on his should to attempt his anger.
"Father calm yourself, it would be foolish to draw attention to us we must be patient and discreet when the time is right we will contact our allies among the demons.
Together we will strike at the heart of the kingdom and claim what is rightfully ours."
Philippe breathing heavily eventually nodded.
"You're right, my dear son. Why waste energy on anger? It's only a matter of time before this island, this kingdom belongs to us."
A cruel smile twisted his face Father and son laughed together their sinister mirth echoing through the room.
But their triumph was short-lived.
Downstairs a sudden crash shattered the silence of the night the sounds of a struggle followed—muffled cries and a heavy silence. Philippe and Roy exchanged worried glances before hastily leaving the office and descending the staircase.
To their shock ten masked figures dressed entirely in black stood in the grand hall. The atmosphere was heavy almost suffocating. Philippe's men renowned for their loyalty and skill—lay unconscious or dead on the floor.
Philippe puffed out his chest, attempting to mask his fear with arrogance.
"Do you know who I am?" he sneered. "I am a noble! How dare you trespass into my home? I will have you all executed for this insolence!"
Roy his younger son and more impulsive stepped forward try to throw a punch to one of the intruders but was immediatly killed.
Philippe screamed in rage and horror as his son collapsed, his eyes lifeless.
The leader of the masked intruders stepped forward. His deep voice resonated through the hall:
"Philippe Kiot by the authority of the Kingdom of Ednia you are sentenced to death for high treason collusion with the enemy and conspiracy with a foreign power."
Philippe's eyes widened in panic.
"Impossible! How… how do you know? No one knew!"
He attempted to run away, but another masked figure blocked his path. In an instant get killed Philippe Kiot was a dead body. The leader of the intruders issued his command:
-Retrieve all documents and burn everything.
The masked figures gathering letters, maps, and hidden documents.Once their task was complete they set the manor ablaze.
Flames consumed the estate lighting up the night sky as the wind carried the ashes of the Kiot family into the darkness.
Meanwhile at the royal castle of the kingdom of Ednia Princess Raelia savored a moment of calm on the balcony of her chambers.
The cool night breeze brushed against her face as she drink a tea.
Without a sound a black-clad figure appeared kneeling before her.
The intruder handed her a dossier.
"Your Highness the documents you requested."
Raelia put down her glasse of tea and took the papers with measured grace.
"Thank you. You may go."
The figure bowed and vanished into the shadows as silently as they had arrived Raelia examined the documents her eyes scanning the damning evidence of the Kiots' treachery.
A satisfied smile briefly illuminated her face.
"So the pieces fall into place" she murmured.
She closed the dossier and gazing out at the starry horizon felt a sense of reassurance that the kingdom's future was a little safer that night.
