The broken path

Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Sophie's Support

After another rough day at school, Mary found herself at Sophie's doorstep. Sophie had invited her over for a quiet evening, sensing Mary needed a break from the pressures of home and school.

Mary hesitated as she stood in front of the door. She wasn't sure what to expect, but before she could second-guess herself, the door opened. "You're here!" Sophie exclaimed, pulling her inside. "Come on, Mom and Dad are dying to meet you."

Mary stepped into the warmth of Sophie's home. The smell of fresh-baked cookies filled the air, and laughter echoed from the living room. Sophie's mother, Mrs. Lyam, appeared with a welcoming smile. "You must be Mary," she said, her voice soft and inviting. "It's so nice to finally meet you. Sophie talks about you all the time."

Sophie rolled her eyes. "Mom, don't embarrass me!" she said, but her tone was playful.

Mr. Richard, Sophie's father, was lounging on the couch with a book in hand. He looked up and grinned. "So, you're the friend who's keeping Sophie out of trouble at school. Thank you for that!"

Mary smiled shyly, feeling a bit out of place but comforted by their warmth. As they all sat down for dinner, Mary couldn't help but notice how Sophie's family was exactly like her own. Mr. Richard and Mrs. Lyam teased each other, sharing stories about their day. They asked Mary questions about her interests and school, making her feel seen in a way she hadn't felt in a long time.

After dinner, Sophie took Mary up to her room. The walls were adorned with photos, posters, and string lights, giving the space a cozy and inviting feel. Sophie flopped onto her bed, patting the spot next to her. "You okay?" she asked, her tone serious now.

Mary hesitated. She wanted to open up but didn't know how to explain everything she was feeling. "Yeah, I'm fine," she said softly.

Sophie studied her for a moment but didn't push. "You know, if you ever want to talk, I'm here," she said, her voice gentle.

Mary nodded, grateful for the offer even if she couldn't take it yet.

The chapter ends with Mary walking home that evening, her heart a little lighter. Sophie's family had shown her a glimpse of what love and support could look like, and for the first time in a long time, she felt the faintest spark of hope.
