Chapter 15: The Lake Awakens
After leaving the ancient ruins, Arion and his team pressed on, continuing their mission through the dense forest. As they ventured deeper, they encountered more monsters, each one falling to their coordinated efforts. Hours passed, and the sounds of wildlife grew louder as the forest thickened around them. Finally, through the breaks in the trees, they caught sight of a shimmering expanse of water.
"That must be it," Kira said, pointing ahead.
The group emerged from the trees and stopped at the edge of a massive lake. The water stretched out before them, calm and reflecting the sky above like a giant mirror. The surrounding area was lush with vegetation, and the air was thick with the smell of damp earth and blooming flowers.
"This is where we'll set up camp," Arion said, scanning the area. The others nodded and began unpacking their supplies, setting up tents and preparing a fire. Night fell quickly, the forest around them alive with the sounds of nocturnal creatures.
As they settled in, another squad emerged from the forest, their lights cutting through the darkness. One by one, more squads arrived at the lake, each setting up camp around its edge. By the time everyone had regrouped, a total of 14 squads had gathered. The area buzzed with activity as mercenaries exchanged stories of their journeys, their voices blending with the crackling of campfires.
Despite the camaraderie, Arion chose not to sleep. Instead, he sat by himself, closing his eyes and focusing on his breathing technique. He drew mana from the air, guiding it into his heart, feeling it circulate through his body in a steady rhythm. The night passed slowly, and as the first rays of sunlight pierced the horizon, the others began to stir, waking one by one.
After a quick breakfast, the squads contacted the mission commander, reporting the successful subjugation of the monsters in the region. About an hour later, the commander arrived in a transport vehicle, his presence commanding respect as he stepped out to address the mercenaries.
"You've all done excellent work," he said, his voice firm yet approving. "Thanks to your efforts, this area is secure, and the operation can proceed."
With that, the commander signaled the arrival of workers and soldiers from Khorad-7. The tranquil lake quickly transformed into a hive of activity as the workers began clearing the area. Trees were felled, bushes were cut back, and heavy machinery rolled in, their engines roaring to life. The mercenaries took the opportunity to rest, gathering in the camp cafeteria to share a meal and reflect on the mission.
The calm was short-lived. As the workers toiled, a sudden tremor shook the ground, causing cups and plates to rattle on the tables. A loud, guttural scream echoed across the lake, freezing everyone in place. Panic erupted as workers and soldiers began running in the opposite direction, their shouts drowned out by the growing chaos.
Arion and the other squads rushed out of the cafeteria, their weapons at the ready. What they saw left them speechless. In the middle of the lake, a massive monster rose from the water, its scaled body gleaming in the sunlight. Standing on four powerful legs, its elongated snout and four glowing eyes—two on each side of its head—made it a terrifying sight. Each step it took sent tremors rippling through the ground, its deafening roars shaking the very air.
The monster began wreaking havoc, smashing through machinery and sending workers flying with its immense strength. Bloodcurdling screams filled the air as the squads stared in shock and horror, the reality of the situation sinking in. The battle was far from over.
The creature's roar shattered the silence of the battlefield as it emerged from the lake, its colossal form breaking the water's surface in a surge of waves. Its black, armored scales glimmered in the fading light, and its red, glowing eyes scanned the mercenaries and Arion's squad with a chilling intensity. The beast's sheer size dwarfed them, casting a shadow over the land as it moved forward, each step sending tremors through the ground.
Korrin, leader of the 14th squad, took a deep breath. "Hold the line! We fight together—don't let it break our ranks!"
The mercenaries were battle-hardened, but even they couldn't help but be shaken by the beast's overwhelming presence. Each one of them knew that they were facing something beyond their strength, but they also knew they had no choice but to fight.
Arion Chronos, standing alongside his squad, felt the weight of the situation. His hand rose, his fingers splayed wide as he focused on the creature. Space and time bent around him, the air shimmering with the raw power of his abilities. No staff—just his hands, manipulating the very fabric of reality. His squad was composed of some of the finest warriors he knew: Torrak, Kira, Vespera, Kethar, and Damon. They had faced many dangers before, but none like this.
"We won't win with brute force alone," Arion said, his voice calm amidst the chaos. "We need to control the fight with magic. Time and space will be our allies."
Torrak, his massive frame towering over the others, cracked his knuckles, his greatsword resting on his shoulder. "I'll make sure it doesn't have time to retaliate."
Kira, her energy shield raised, stood ready. "I'll keep it busy for you. Just tell me where to strike."
The beast, enraged by their presence, let out a deafening roar and charged forward, its claws tearing through the earth with each step. It was a juggernaut—unstoppable, relentless. The mercenaries scrambled to avoid the beast's destructive onslaught, but Korrin was quick to direct them.
"Move! Don't let it corner you!"
Torrak, with his greatsword held high, charged headlong at the beast. His blade slammed into its thick scales, but it barely left a scratch. The creature's eyes flickered with irritation as it turned its massive head toward Torrak. Without warning, it swiped its massive tail, sending Torrak flying backward into a pile of rocks.
"Is that all you've got?" Torrak growled, pulling himself to his feet, blood dripping from his side.
The beast roared again, its mouth opening wide as it unleashed a burst of fire toward Kira, who quickly raised her shield to block the attack. The flames danced harmlessly against her shield, but the sheer force of the explosion sent her flying backward, crashing into a boulder.
"Get up, Kira!" Arion called, his eyes narrowing. With a flick of his wrist, Arion altered the flow of time, slowing the beast's movements. It was disoriented for a brief moment, its massive claws swiping at nothing as it tried to adjust.
"Now!" Arion shouted.
Torrak, his greatsword gleaming, leapt forward, delivering a powerful strike to the beast's side. The blow left a deep cut, but the creature's tough hide absorbed much of the damage. It let out a deafening roar of pain, staggering back for a moment. But it wasn't finished.
With surprising speed, the creature retaliated. Its claws slashed at Torrak, sending him tumbling away once more. Kethar, from the shadows, darted toward the creature's legs, trying to find an opening, but the beast was too quick. It stomped its massive foot down, sending Kethar flying into the air before he landed heavily on the ground.
"Dammit!" Vespera cursed, trying to get a clean shot from her perch. She fired a high-powered round aimed at the creature's eye, but it missed as the beast whipped its head to the side, narrowly dodging the attack.
Arion's eyes flared with power as he extended his hands toward the beast. "Chrono Flux!" he shouted, and time slowed around the creature once again. It staggered, unable to move as quickly as before, but even in its disoriented state, it still posed a threat. Its tail swung wildly, crashing into the ground near Kira, knocking her shield out of her hands.
The creature was growing more enraged, thrashing against the slow-motion effects Arion had imposed. It let out a terrible screech, and suddenly, the ground beneath the mercenaries cracked open. The creature's massive claws tore through the earth, creating a shockwave that blasted the mercenaries backward, knocking them off their feet.
"No!" Korrin shouted, scrambling to regain control. "Stay focused!"
Arion's squad was still standing, but the creature's strength was overwhelming. "We need to finish this, and fast," Arion muttered, sweat trickling down his forehead as he poured more of his energy into controlling the beast.
With a deep breath, Arion raised his hands to the sky. "Temporal Rift!" he shouted.
The air around the creature twisted and warped as a tear in the fabric of time itself appeared, distorting the monster's form. The beast staggered, unable to move as its body flickered in and out of existence, its enormous size becoming unstable.
"Now, Torrak!" Arion shouted, his voice filled with urgency.
Torrak, gripping his greatsword with both hands, charged forward and struck the creature with a devastating blow, this time cutting deep into its neck. Blood sprayed from the wound, but the beast let out a bellow of pain, still not collapsing. Its eyes burned with fury, its tail sweeping across the battlefield.
But before Torrak could strike again, the creature unleashed a final burst of energy, sending a massive shockwave that sent everyone flying backward. The blast knocked Arion's rift out of alignment, and time seemed to return to normal. The creature's movements became more erratic as it swiped its claws at everything in range, taking down mercenaries one by one.
Korrin was thrown to the ground, unable to react in time. The creature's claws scraped through the air, and with a final, brutal swipe, he was gone.
"Damn it!" Damon shouted, his hands glowing with magic as he created a barrier to shield the remaining mercenaries from the beast's attacks.
"Stay alive!" Arion barked, still focused on the creature. He was exhausted, but his magic was the only thing holding the beast at bay. Time around the creature began to slow again, and Arion reached out with his hands, attempting to manipulate space once more, but the creature's resistance grew stronger. It was no longer just a mindless beast—it was fighting back against Arion's magic with a ferocity he hadn't anticipated.
The creature roared in defiance, its body writhing with power. It wasn't just a beast—it was a force of nature, and it wasn't going to die that easily.
"We can't stop it like this," Arion muttered, barely able to keep up with the creature's violent movements. "We need a bigger strategy—something that can break it once and for all."
But as the dust settled and the creature's enormous form loomed over them, it was clear: the fight was far from over. The monster was not dead. Not yet.
