The Crown Of Tears

Chapter 14: 14-A noteworthy thorn

Prince Angelus returned to the castle, ready to navigate the treacherous political waters of the royal family. As he was facing opposition from all sides, he had to think and act wisely.

With the fate on his right on the throne in the balance. He needs to prove to everyone that he is a force to be reckoned with.

Prince Angelus sneaked around the castle to find his mother. They had their differences but when it came down to his birthright, the woman proved an ally.

He ran into Captain Davon in the halls of the king's palace. Captain Davon's eyes went wide with surprise at noting his surprise. In a split second, he managed to compose himself and approach Prince Angelus.

"Davon, I need to meet my mother. It's urgent! " Prince Angelus informed him.

"You can see your mother later. Come with me, I'll escort you back to your chambers, " Captain Davon ushered calmly.

Prince Angelus shook his head to refute his plan. He had evidence of his father's cruelty and needed to discuss it with his mother. To find a solution as soon as possible and stop the king from naming his bastard son as the next ruler of Sevigoria.

"I must meet my mother. It's important! " he emphasized the urgency. "Consider it your birthday gift to me, " Prince Angelus added when he noted the reluctance in Captain Davon's eyes.

"The best gift I can give at this point is to send you back to your chambers, " Captain Davon let out in a pained voice. His eyes failed to meet Prince Angelus's eyes.

Prince Angelus blinked his eyelashes in confusion. Captain Davon's words made no sense to him. He figured the man acted so because of the royal decree from the king.

"Listen, I'll take responsibility for this. I won't let the king hurt you, " he assured.

Captain Davon bit his lower lip. His heart squeezed in pain; the Prince was worried for his safety when he hurt the male more than he could bear. He didn't know how to break the news to Angelus.

He tried to look out for the prince and avoid him falling into a scandalous path. I'm doing so, he told Queen Rosalyn of Prince Angelus's attraction to Lord Gael Vondrak, which cost the prince his first love.

Captain Davon was relieved when he found that the prince snuck out of the palace. At least he wouldn't be in the palace to witness the dreadful event the king threw in place of his birthday party.

Unfortunately for him, Prince Angelus came back in the nick of time to witness everything.

"Let me lead you to your chambers. I promise I'll get the queen to see you soon, " his voice shook betraying his panic.

The prince narrowed his eyes at him. It puzzled his mind, the reason Davon wasn't letting him through to meet his mother.

"What are you hiding from me?" he questioned.

Davon went blue. He erred in finding an answer to the prince. Captain Davon had no words to express what all went down when the prince was out of the palace and what was still happening.

Thoughts we're running through the prince like water. "Where's my mother?"

Prince Angelus pushed passed Captain Davon and stepped into the throne room. He was taken aback by the grand decorations around the room. The King refused to celebrate his birthday, so he wondered what the reception was about.

He ambled into the room, the event was ongoing and the important people of Sevigoria gathered in the throne room to bear witness to it. Prince Angelus pushed passed the guests, one by one, his steps bringing him closer to seeing the sight that captivated everyone's eyes.

"I now pronounce you man and wife, " he heard the priest's voice before the scene came into his visage. "In the eyes of God, society, and the law, Princess Rose and Lord Gael Vondrak are now one in marriage, " the priest added.

His words echoed around Prince Angelus's head. He shot his gaze to the throne where the couple stood. Donned glamorously, as they exchanged their first kiss to officiate the marriage in front of the witnesses.

Prince Angelus stared blankly at them. His body was frozen in place, while his body shook with vexation.

All he'd given to his first love tumbled down to the ground like it was stone. Without making a single sound. Silent tears flowed down his cheeks as he watched the man he loved marry his sister in the presence of everyone.

Prince Angelus didn't think his birthday could get any worse. But it seems he underestimated his family, they stole the joy Cassiel returned to his eyes with more tears.

Cassiel made a few hours of his birthday memorable but he didn't hold a candle to his father.

The King put a permanent noteworthy thorn on his birthday. He made certain that the anniversary of Prince Angelus's birthday would be the anniversary of Gael's marriage. A constant pricking reminder of his loss.

He gritted his teeth and held back the scream knocking at his throat to be let out. A broken heart was all he had left; the pieces were scattered everywhere, and Prince Angelus barely recognized them.

Everyone gave him an unforgettable birthday gift. One he knew he'd remember for the rest of his life.

Queen Rosalyn saw him in the crowd from her throne. Her heart shattered at the sight of her broken son.

She rose from her seat, tears rolled down her eyes; it devastated her to see the apple of her eye in tears.

Everyone was attracted by her sudden movement. They followed her line of sight and caught a glimpse of Prince Angelus in the crowd.

King Edmund, Mistress Diane, Princess Rose, Lord Gael, Princess Runa, Princess Elveryn, and the guests registered shocked expressions on seeing him.

"Congratulations, Princess Rose, " Princess Elveryn let out. "You and Lord Gael make a perfect pair, " She spoke, throwing a smirk at Angelus to rub salt in his wounds.

Gael went pale at the sight of the tears flowing down Prince Angelus's eyes. Ever since he met the prince, the man always held his head high and smiled. Prince Angelus was confident and stubborn with what he wanted, but now Gael failed to spot that confidence in his eyes.

When the king suggested a flash marriage, Gael agreed instantly to save Prince Angelus from breaking apart at each ceremony. He figured it wouldn't hurt the prince as much if it happened quickly. But he was wrong, and it hurt him to be.

"Brother! " Princess Rose called. "I thought I'd get married without you. I'm glad you are... "

Captain Davon turned Prince Angelus away from the throne. He held the prince by the shoulders, "The prince is unwell. I'll help him back to his room, " he announced.

He led Prince Angelus out of the throne room. Prince Angelus offered no resistance, the priest's words and the kissing scene haunting his mind.

"This is all my fault. If I hadn't told the Queen about your affection for Gael. The events that followed wouldn't have occurred, " Davon spoke out. "From the bottom of my heart, I am truly sorry for the part I played in the pain you feel, " he apologized.

"Too late," Prince Angelus yanked Davon's arm off and walked away.
