Chapter 18: Azel The Dark Dragon
Max returned in a puddle of blood, was questioned, and then responded. Going to bed, he had a strong sense of guilt. If only he had kept his mouth shut. The next day, he was awakened by five guards who were about to arrest him.
For what reason? Killing the Dragon Watchers.
'I did not do such a thing!'
"Kid, we located your drive at the location, lying will just make it worse, oh, and don't attempt to blame a dragon again."
Max would discover that the Dragon Watchers were adored by the people there, they always aided and protected them, so heading approaching the courthouse, people yelled at him, flung objects at him, and even tried attacking him.
...
He was sent to the lowest tier of the prison after receiving his sentence.
"Are you certain I should be here? They were just E-ranks."
"Was it possible for someone with bad stats to murder a group of E-rank individuals who only were E-ranks because they preferred it that way? I call bullshit."
Apparently, they now believed that he was falsifying his statistics.
Max should have been furious, but he wasn't because he was responsible for their deaths, so this was acceptable. Additionally, Fay will save him, she had to.
...
Three weeks have passed and no sign of escape. His life had gotten on a worse path than he thought, there was no way he could complete his oath after staying twenty years in jail, not being able to use his drive because of his cuffs.
That would lead to such a horrible conclusion.
The days in jail were boring, eat work sleep, and repeated, there was the occasional fight but that would be quickly interrupted by the guards. The food tasted spoiled and the bed was straight stone. The nightguards talked all night and disturbed any sleep. It was truly horrible.
"Hey, can you hear me?"
At first, he thought that was a guard, but he knew that voice.
'Azel? Why haven't you said anything in so long.'
"I had some work to do, planning my future in your body."
'Yeah well, you're going to have to wait twenty years until that.'
"But why."
Max was confused by such a dumb question.
"Can't we just escape?"
'I don't want to, it was my fault. And even if I did we couldn't escape.'
"You want to know what I think. It's that you have grown weak. You smiled after brutally killing your best friend, and now you blame yourself for not protecting some damn party while being injured."
'But that was different.'
"Aw boo hoo, did the little child want a family, you were doing progress until this whole family thing, it's like whenever you hear about being part of one you focus all your attention on it It was better when you weren't a slave for looking for its master."
'What does slavery have to do with this.'
"A lot, you're acting just like one, but your worst, slaves want to be released, yet for you, it's like you like being one."
'Maybe you're right.'
"Of course I'm right!"
Max sighed.
'Still, we aren't leaving we're waiting for Fay to prove to people that I'm innocent.'
"And let's say she does, what makes you think this won't happen again, or if they really are going to trust you, if they are going to show their real faces to you?"
Max's face darkened a bit.
"So they want to take you to jail, give them a reason to do it."
...
A guard was having a snack while playing games with his friends.
"UNO!"
"+4 Card."
"Damn it."
This was the sole reason he still had this job, for moments like this. His boss came into the room.
"Andrew, it's your turn to watch those monsters."
'Sir yes sir!'
He said while running out of the room. He was quite new here so he had to make a good impression, arriving at his destination, he stood against the wall watching the cells in his area.
When it came to the lower tiers, they had different guards guarding three cells at a time because of how dangerous the people there were.
On his left, he saw a beautiful woman around his age. He blushed, the girl seeing this smiled and started talking, what he didn't expect was for her to send him a kiss.
Finally, his day had come.
But then his face turned to horror, as he saw the girl get crushed by a flying cell door, he screamed and rushed to her. But there was too much smoke, it was too dangerous.
As the smoke dissipated, he noticed a boy with black hair that resembled the hollowness of space, some clothes that were burned and bloodied, and most markedly, his eyes. They were the eyes of a dragon. However, while the other pupil had the white filled in, the first pupil only had a white outline. He saw his foot on the woman's head, which was covered in blood. He had her sword in his hands as well.
...
Escaping did not seem like a horrible idea anymore, but it seemed impossible. He didn't just have restraints that prevented him from using his powers, his soul was also damaged. He couldn't go past a prison with so many guards.
"I'll make you a bargain, I'll give you my power in return for a portion of you. Even if it leads to my taking over your body later, it's still better than spending nearly twice as long as you've lived so far in here."
Max stood motionless, without uttering a word, but his response was evident.
His oath came first, regardless of what could happen in the future.
...
He studied the sword, disappointed. It was a cheap sword that could be purchased at any store. However, it was still better than nothing. The sword didn't matter much given the strength Max felt coursing through his body at the time.
It was his first experience being completely awake when this power was operating, and it seemed even more strong. When dragon eyes appear on vessels, a filled pupil indicates the dragon's control, whereas an empty one indicates the vessel's control. This indicated Max was still not completely in charge.
He shifted his gaze to the guard, who shook as he looked into the boy's eyes. Dragon eyes were uncommon, especially for those of a powerful dragon.
But he couldn't just stand there, he was an officer, and this kid ruined his chances for love!
But as he prepared, he felt half of his head drop to the earth.
The other detainees saw this and yelled at the child to unlock their doors as well, which he did at a price, their lives. He was not going to stop for just guards, everyone was going to suffer the price for this injustice.
There was supposed to be one more guard on this floor, but Max couldn't find him, so he presumably fled away. But who wouldn't? He looked like a grim reaper wandering calmly through the hallways.
But you can't escape a dragon. Max wiped the final guard's blood on his blade before heading upstairs.
It was a genocide, no life was left in sight. Before they were enjoying games together, and now they had all died.
But Max felt no sorrow, no matter what. The guards may well have perished as their children hugged and cried, and he still wouldn't feel a thing.
This is exactly how things operate, this is fate.
Fate, he has despised that term his entire life, and he will find a method to eliminate it eventually, even if it means fighting gods. But for now, he had to let fate take its course.
...
Hearing the disturbance, the jail co-head went to investigate. What he saw was a corridor filled with blood and dead people, with a kid walking through it, his eyes shining in the darkness.
"Were you the one who did all of this?"
'Isn't it obvious?'
"Damn you, they had children waiting at home for their fathers to return."
'Should I care?'
Max lifted his sword in the air, pointing at the co-head, a dragon head ran over the blade, and when it reached the end, it stared at him and let out a scream before leaping at him. What was left were merely bones, which it disliked because they tasted bad.
Walking down the corridors, murdering every convict and guard he encountered, he noticed someone in a cell. It was a female around his age. She had white hair that would blend in with snow, and her eyes were like emeralds. She was dressed wretchedly. So the prison wasn't very nice to her.
She was the only person Max let go for free, and the only one who would make it out alive. He needed to complete three more levels before reaching the conclusion. He easily got through the following one. No one could touch him, but not for the reasons you believe.
Even if someone managed to score a strike on him, it would be useless due mainly to the black matter Max had assigned to blanket his body and absorb the impact of each attack. Climbing up, he just had one floor left after this one. But this would not be simple, as he was confronted by the jail's chief, a lieutenant...Isaac Lotus.
