The Demon of Desire: the rise of the slum rat

Chapter 15: Chapter 15: The Ambush

The forest was unnervingly quiet, its usual symphony of rustling leaves and distant wildlife replaced by an oppressive silence. Mikhael's crimson eyes scanned the trees, his body tense and ready to spring into action. Beside him, Shirone moved cautiously, her silver hair catching the faint moonlight that filtered through the canopy. Kael walked behind them, their sharp eyes flicking between the shadows, one hand resting on a pouch of enchanted tools.

The artifact's whispers were faint but persistent, urging Mikhael onward. Each step closer to their destination made its presence stronger, like a steady drumbeat in his chest.

"This silence isn't natural," Kael murmured, breaking the stillness.

"Rogues," Mikhael said flatly. "They're here. Waiting."

Shirone's claws flexed instinctively, her golden eyes scanning their surroundings. "How many?"

Mikhael activated Mana Sense, his vision sharpening as he reached out with his perception. A dozen faint signatures flickered at the edge of his range, surrounding them like a noose.

"Too many," Mikhael replied. "We're surrounded."

The Ambush Springs

Before Mikhael could issue a warning, the first rogue struck. A hulking devil burst from the underbrush, its claws glowing with dark energy as it lunged for Kael. Mikhael moved instinctively, activating Shadow Step to intercept the attack. He reappeared in front of the rogue, his blade flashing as it carved through the creature's arm in one fluid motion.

The devil roared in pain, but its cry was drowned out as more emerged from the shadows. Mikhael counted at least ten, their forms twisted and grotesque.

"Shirone! Kael!" Mikhael barked. "Don't hold back."

The rogues charged in unison, their movements unnervingly coordinated. Mikhael stepped forward, his body blurring as he activated Phantom Dash to close the gap. His first strike—a devastating Muay Thai knee—crushed the ribs of the nearest rogue, sending it crumpling to the ground.

Another rogue came at him from the side, its claws slashing through the air. Mikhael ducked low, sweeping its legs with a fluid capoeira kick before flipping backward to avoid a third attacker.

Kael's Expertise

Kael moved with surprising precision, their hands darting into their pouch to retrieve small, glowing orbs. With a flick of their wrist, they tossed the orbs into the air, and they exploded into nets of crackling energy that ensnared two rogues.

"You're welcome," Kael called over their shoulder, grinning as Mikhael dispatched the trapped devils with a series of quick Jeet Kune Do straight punches.

"Don't get cocky," Mikhael shot back, spinning into a Tornado Kick that sent another rogue flying.

Shirone's Instincts

Shirone was a blur of silver and gold as she leaped onto the back of a rogue devil, her claws raking across its thick hide. The creature howled, twisting and flailing to throw her off, but Shirone clung tightly, her small frame deceptively strong.

When the devil finally managed to dislodge her, Shirone landed lightly on her feet, her golden eyes gleaming with determination. She darted forward again, her movements fast and unpredictable, delivering a flurry of strikes that left the rogue staggering.

"Not bad, kid," Mikhael muttered as he stepped in to finish the job with a powerful Rising Dragon, launching the devil into the air before slamming it back to the ground.

The Artifact's Temptation

As the battle raged on, Mikhael felt the artifact's influence growing stronger. Its whispers were no longer faint—they roared in his mind, urging him to unleash its power.

"More... use more..."

The energy pulsing against his chest was intoxicating, a raw, unrelenting force that promised victory. Mikhael clenched his jaw, trying to drown out the voice, but the temptation was overwhelming.

One of the larger rogues charged at him, its claws glowing with dark magic. Mikhael activated Charge, his own energy surging in response. His next strike—a spinning back fist infused with the artifact's power—obliterated the rogue in a flash of black light.

For a moment, the clearing was silent. Even the remaining rogues seemed hesitant to attack.

Then Shirone's voice cut through the stillness. "Mikhael... your eyes."

Mikhael blinked, his breathing ragged as he looked at her. The fear in her expression sent a cold chill down his spine. He raised a hand to his face, feeling the faint warmth of the artifact's energy radiating through him.

A Desperate Push

The rogues recovered quickly, their hesitation replaced by renewed aggression. Mikhael forced the artifact's whispers to the back of his mind, focusing on the fight.

Kael's traps bought them precious seconds as Mikhael and Shirone worked together to dispatch the remaining devils. Mikhael's movements were precise and deadly, his strikes landing with calculated efficiency. Shirone's nekoshou instincts allowed her to outmaneuver her opponents, her claws finding weak points in their defenses.

As the last rogue fell, Mikhael stood in the center of the clearing, his chest heaving. The artifact's whispers had quieted, but their presence lingered like a shadow.

The Aftermath

Kael approached cautiously, their sharp eyes studying Mikhael. "You almost lost it back there," they said. "The artifact's power is growing—and so is its influence over you."

"I'm fine," Mikhael replied, his tone curt.

"Are you?" Kael pressed. "Because from where I'm standing, you're one slip away from losing control completely."

Shirone stepped forward, her golden eyes filled with concern. "Kael's right. You're strong, but this thing... it's dangerous. What if it takes over?"

Mikhael looked at her, his expression unreadable. "It won't."

The tension between them was palpable, but before anyone could speak further, Mikhael turned away, his crimson eyes fixed on the horizon.

"We keep moving," he said. "If the artifact's drawing this much attention, we're running out of time."

Kael and Shirone exchanged a wary glance before following him into the shadows.
