Chapter 18: Way to the Trees
10 Days later..
At the outer forest of Monoghriad..
The sun is high, shimmering through the thick leaves, with a gentle gust blowing into every corner and holes, everything around it came to life as the forest is brimming with movement.
Among that intricate beauty, a group of knights and mercenaries can be seen walking forward into the unknown, where many mysteries are waiting for them, they cautiously took a step and occassionally checks everything around them while holding their weapons tightly.
"Hold!— 2 Orcs at your right! Prepare for battle!" Carfeld Said to his fellow comrades.
"There's another one here too! 10 Goblins from Behind!"
At the back of the expedition group, Rezio took the role of the leader for people in the back, where it was mostly the mercenaries.
The Orcs and Goblins both made an appearance on them and they launched an attack simultaneously, the goblins brought slingshot and stone sword on their hand while the orcs uses a wooden club as their weapon, as they charged forward to Carfeld's group, the mercenaries and knights are already on their position and is ready to strike, with one swing of their swords, the goblins are defeated one by one, some of them got beheaded, some were slashed on their stomach, while others died to a bash on their head by the swords that the mercenary have.
GROAAGGHH!!
One of the orcs screamed and he swung his club in a horizontal line, forcing the knights to either dash backward or crouched onto the ground, when the knights are about to attack the orc because of its vulnerable position after the swing, the other orc stepped in to stop them and attacked the knights again, both of the orcs worked together to keep eachother alive as they are now being cautious since they didn't expect their prey to be this strong.
"Get back!!" Carfeld said, instructing the knights to back off.
Then, he ran towards the two orcs with his sword in hand, Carfeld dashed in a zig-zag pattern, confusing the two orcs with its complexity, then with a slight opening that were created because of the confusion, Carfeld jumped from behind the orcs and swung his sword with a lot of force, the sword made a deep cut on both of the orc's body and they fall to the ground as they screamed in pain.
GOAARRGHHH!!
GROOARRGGH!!!!
THUD!!
THUD!
Despite having a face of a pig, orc's noise are very different from a normal pig, they usually communicate using small grunts and growl, and when one of them are on the brink of death because of a predator, they will let out a final screech that most of the time alert other orcs in the vicinity, so when someone is facing against an orc, it is recommended to kill them instantly without causing them too much pain, like beheading their head or stabbing their brain.
Since Carfeld's attack was not enough to instantly kills the two orcs, they manage to call out for other orcs in the area, if he and his group stayed in this area any longer, it will be troublesome.
"Look out for the injured if there are any, and quickly treat them to the best of your ability!"
"Captain! We need to get out of here quick! Before the orcs found us!"
"Yeah you're right, come on! It seems like the goblins has been defeated too, follow me."
The expedition group then ran away from the scene, just in time before other orcs started to appear on the area where they've killed the two orcs from before, Carfeld's group went deeper into the forest as he have intended, this time however, their surrounding would be much more dangerous.
"Carfeld, why did you hold yourself back when battling with those orcs earlier? Im sure even the knights could've killed them without alerting the other orcs." Davira asked to Carfeld, back then she was just watching the battle and helped the knights with their next best move.
Since orc's are a common monster that isn't very strong, many people especially adventurers and knights should be able to defeat them with not that much of an effort, but when there's more than one orc that is working together, that's when it gets a bit more challenging.
"Orc's intelligence are somewhat not that different from a human, although in the end they're still a monster, they also bond connection with other orcs, they formed tribe, create families, and most importantly friendship, i purposefully let them call for help so that we would no longer meet any orcs again on the way— Because you know, they're all too focused on that place, and we're gonna enter the inner forest soon, it's going to be way more dangerous, we need to save up our energy for more dire situations."
"Aahhh– Is that so, i guess that makes sense, but i never knew Orcs were that smart?"
"Haha, you should read the monster encyclopedia book, it contains many informations about monsters that not many people know."
"Hooo... I see, i'll read it sometimes later, that book was sold in Adventurer's Guild right? i thought only adventurer was able to buy them."
"No way, anyone can buy it as long as you pay the money, it's a great book if you like to go hunting, we knights don't really need it since we barely have monsters problem inside the city, so i can understand why you think that."
As the expedition group kept walking along the forest path, their surrounding gradually began to change, from the trees to the insects and plants, at some point to which they couldn't remember exactly when, the trees started to become way larger than before, and the insects that is sticking to the leaves and tree trunks are no longer the same one that they used to see in the outer forest, in there they saw some poisonous beetles, colorful yet spiky caterpillars, and butterflies that roamed the place with glowing green light and falling debris.
"Careful everyone, we've arrived at the inner part of Monoghriad... From here on out, no one is allowed to stay more than 3 meters away from one another."
Every person in the area nodded at the same time since they don't want to alert whatever inside the forest with their loud noise, although their iron armor still makes a lot of rustling sound, they can only hope that it's not enough to draw attention.
"Captain, where are we going after this? Do you have a map?" Said one of the special knights beside Carfeld.
"Don't worry, Finance Minister Julian gave me a map before we left Larim, although it's not that clear where we are or what's the next direction we should take, i think i can manage this."
"— Alright then if you say so."
The map in Carfeld's hand was not an ordinary map, instead of showing a somewhat detailed structure of the forest, the map only had a few black lines and words of description about a particular tree, the whole map itself looks like it was made by a random person who has no knowledge how to make a map.
Behind that confident face of him, Carfeld was panicking in his mind about what he should do about the map that he received.
'Ahh, shit.. Im screwed, i never opened the map when we were on the way to here, because i thought this would just be a normal map!! I mean who in the right mind would send a whole platoon of knights, mercenaries, and special knights to an an unknown place without a proper map?! Also why is this horrible map have a fancy seals and thread on it if the content is just shit?— Fuck, i can't tell where to go, what is this!?'
It seems like, Carfeld's journey would still be a long way before they reached their destination, today is almost over, and the expedition group could possibly be stuck in there for god's know how long.
