Chapter 21: God Has a Sense of Humor
Noah, picked up a bouquet of red roses that lay on his bed. They had arrived earlier than he had expected but it was a good sign, that everything was going as planned.
It wasn't as though he was superstitious and believed that some occurrences meant either bad luck or good luck but, on a day as special as this he was willing to believe in anything.
"Noah, can I come in?" A voice called from outside his room.
"Sure." He absentmindedly replied.
A young girl, entered into his room and shut the door behind her. "Mom said I should check up on you."
"And were you supposed to tell me, Valerie?" He eyed his younger sister, slightly amused at her honesty.
Valerie, shrugged and sat on his dressing table. "I don't think so but lying feels stressful. So are you? I gotta report back to the commander of the ship."
"I'm more than fine, why would she ask such a question?" Noah, turned to look at his reflection in one of the many mirrors in his room.
"How am I supposed to know? Ask Mom if you're so curious." She answered automatically.
"Valerie, talk."
"Isn't it obvious? Even I am worried about you."
"Why?"
"Noah, you always try to avoid hosting parties and suddenly you wake up one day and tell Mom you want to host one?"
"Maybe I'm finally maturing?"
"Then why did you ask Mom to lie to the invitees that she's the organizer and not you? Valerie further questioned, not having his excuse.
"Just because I wanted to, I decided to be different."
"Or was it someone that made you want to be different?"
Noah, smiled at the accuracy of his sister. "Ding ding, you hit the jackpot."
"I knew it! Spill!" She practically yelled.
"Have you noticed that I always frequent that amusement park for cotton candy?"
Valerie, nodded excitedly. "Of course I do. I knew something was up when you always went to that creepy place. I just concluded that you'd fallen into the life of crime, who knew you were having a passionate affair." She giggled, happy that someone made her brother want to try.
"Passionate affair seems like a stretch. We're just friends right now and she has no idea about my feelings."
"Oh, so it's one sided? That's sad."
"I guess so." Noah muttered.
"So basically you planned a party for her without her knowledge, invited her as though it was Mom's event, and now you'll give her those flowers on the bed?"
"Yes, that's a simple summary."
"So how would you hand it over? Wouldn't she find it weird if you shove it in her face the moment she comes?"
Noah, chuckled at the slightly tempting thought. "No I won't. At the end, I'll tell her how I feel and offer the flowers."
"And what if she rejects you?"
Noah, remained silent. He had thought that far but, he didn't want to imagine the possibility of her turning him down outrightly.
But if he didn't tell her now, then when would he?
"Then I'll accept it that way."

"Tell me this isn't a dream." Alice whispered as she stared in awe at the ballroom. "This is amazing Noah." She turned to look at Noah, who beamed at her compliment.
"I know right? I knew you'd love it here."
"Thank you for inviting me." She said absentmindedly as she admired the chandeliers, the flowers that adorned the room, the wine pyramid, and the beautiful dresses worn by the most stunning women.
Alice, had initially questioned her attendance and wanted to call in sick. But now that she was here, she was glad she came.
She was probably just overthinking the whole party. She had even questioned whether it was a date.
Alice, thanked God that no one could read minds because Noah would probably laugh if he knew what she had thought about.
"Did I tell you that you look stunning?" Noah, stretched out his hands for her to grasp it.
"Yes you have, but it's still nice to hear it again." She replied as she gripped his outstretched hand. "You look good in your tuxedo. Did you get a haircut?"
Noah, placed his free hand on his hair and laughed awkwardly. "You noticed? Mom couldn't have me looking unruly this night."
Alice nodded in agreement. "Makes sense. Still looks good on you though. I think you'd look good whatever hairstyle you have."
Noah, choked on his spit, surprised at the compliments she threw his way. "Alice, I—" He paused when he realized what he had, almost said.
"Yes?" She questioned in anticipation, wondering what he had wanted to say.
"I'd like to introduce you to a couple of my friends."
Alice, tapped her chin at his request. "Would it be appropriate introducing a mere friend? Won't they think we're dating or something?"
"It doesn't matter."
"Noah, you really don't have to. I'm more than excited to enjoy the party and have a food platter. Then I'll leave early before my parents lose their mind "
Noah, raised his brows at her words. "Haven't you had like a plate of everything this night?"
"Pft, I sure have had a lot to eat." She tapped her food bump and grinned. She couldn't possibly resist the tempting scent of food. Her mouth had watered the moment she had entered.
Good thing she made sure not to eat all day.
"You'll have your fill once you've met everyone." Noah insisted stubbornly, not giving her the opportunity to escape.
Alice, shuddered at the thought of meeting every single person. That was the one thing that she didn't want to do. "Noah, no one introduces a mere friend."
"Then should I introduce you as my girlfriend?"
Alice's heart skipped a beat at the thought. What was going on?
"Then that would be lying." Alice replied.
"Then should I make it a reality?"
"What?" Alice took a slight step back, unsure of how best to answer.
"Should I make you mine Alice? Then it won't be a lie."
"Noah, don't make jokes like that." She halfheartedly said. "Making jokes relating to matters of the heart, isn't nice."
Noah frowned as though he was utterly displeased. "Joke? Who said I was joking?"
"Noah —"
"I would never make a joke about something like that, especially when it involves you." Noah added, refusing to let her complete what she was saying.
Noah, grabbed her hand and dragged her towards the opposite side of the room. "Let's go, a close friend of mine is right there."
Alice followed him, not having the energy to refuse or to understand what he was saying.
He stopped pulling her when they had successfully made their way across the room.
"That's my friend." Noah pointed at a male whose back was turned to them.
Alice, studied his back profile as she waited for him to notice them.
Alice, admired his height and his lean build. He looked as though he were an athlete, especially with his broad shoulders that seemed prominent in his suit. His dark hair, was placed in a ponytail and Alice, felt a slight tinge of jealousy at the silkiness and length.
Was it legal for a male to have such perfect hair and look attractive just from a mere back view?
It most definitely wasn't and Alice, had the desire to take his contact details and tell him just that.
Alice, giggled at her silly thoughts which seemed to draw the attention of the stranger.
She quickly looked down when she noticed that he was about to turn, not wanting him to know that she had been staring.
"Alice, meet my friend..."
Alice smiled before she slowly raised her head. "Hello—"
"... Eric."
Alice, froze as she stared at the face that she had held in her hands.
"Alice?" Eric questioned, also looking confused.
Alice, took some steps back when she finally figured out how her body worked.
This was a dream wasn't it? This had to be an awful dream because there was no way he would be in front of her.
But as she looked into the green eyes that she had once fondly looked at, she knew all too well that everything was real.
She was neither hallucinating nor dreaming.
And that ladies and gentlemen is how Alice Anderson Gwen concluded that God, had one heck of a sense of humor.
