The Emperor of Sound: Beyond the veil

Chapter 7: The Book of Amon

The decision was made – they would take the path to the right. Zephyrus and Illumi, choose to remain outside to observe, while the other three ventured onward. The path descended a long, winding staircase, leading them to a small, circular chamber. Torches flared, illuminating the space.

The room itself was an unsettling anomaly, a perfect sphere in which they found themselves imprisoned. In the center, a raised stone slab, carved directly from the earth, dominated the space. At the far end of the chamber, a heavy, imposing door loomed, its surface adorned with intricate runic carvings and numerous talismans affixed both to the door and the surrounding walls.

"I can't read any of this," Lyraea stated, her voice tinged with a touch of frustration. "Can any of you?"

A collective shrug was the only response. The carvings and symbols seemed alien, devoid of any recognizable language or pattern.

"These are... wild ruins," Kairos muttered, his brow furrowed. "How could anyone use them to create such intricate talismans?"

Lysander, approaching the door cautiously, hesitated refusing to touch its cold, smooth surface. A sense of unease settled over her.

"I can't sense even the faintest hint of light beyond this door," she confided, her tone laced with concern. "It's an endless expanse of darkness."

"That's odd," Kairos added, his voice laced with a mix of curiosity and apprehension. "I can hear a heartbeat emanating from beyond. I can't quite place what it is, but it sounds almost… alive."

"Do you hear anything else?" Lysander asked, her voice barely a whisper.

"No, just the heartbeat, but its rhythm is unlike anything I've heard before. Whatever is behind that door has a purpose. A very specific one, and I'm not sure it's a welcoming one." Kairos's voice echoed with a palpable sense of unease. "Let's get the hell out of here."

Lysander, ever the pragmatist, tried to soothe her brother's anxieties. "Don't be afraid, you big softie. Your big sister is here to protect you. Besides, there's nothing in this world that can't be overcome with courage and determination." She embraced him from behind, gently drawing his cheeks to try and lighten the mood.

"You lot are a peculiar bunch. Your heightened senses beyond the talismans are quite significant," Lyraea observed, her gaze scanning the room with an air of quiet contemplation.

Kairos, pushing aside his apprehension, moved towards the books, evaluating the room for potential traps. Finding none, he carefully picked up a leather-bound tome and began to flip through its pages. His expression darkened with each passing page.

"Magnificent. Just magnificent," he muttered, frustration clear in his voice. "Why did we even come here? This book is entirely blank." He flung the book onto the stone floor with a sigh, his expression one of utter dismay.

"You're right," Lysander replied, picking up the book. "There's nothing in it."

"What do you mean? There are words inside. Can't you see them?" Lyraea countered, her voice tinged with suspicion.

"Wait, you see something?" Lysander inquired, her eyes wide with disbelief.

"I'm pretty sure you're pulling our legs now," a voice retorted dryly.

"No, I do. Look..." Lyraea pointed to the cover of the book. "It says 'The Book of Amon II'."

"How is it that only you can see the words but we can't?" Lysander asked, her tone slightly skeptical.

"I haven't the foggiest," Lyraea responded, a perplexed expression on her face.

A series of questions plagued Kairos mind: What secrets lay concealed behind that imposing door? How did it come to be placed there? Was their father aware of its existence? Was it created by the Forbidden Zone, or did it create the Forbidden Zone itself? Such questions seemed to multiply with each passing moment. He recognized the futility of such speculation; their current priority was to leave this unnerving chamber.

They searched, but found only a strangely shaped key, seemingly unrelated to the locked room. With relief, they emerged from the unsettling chamber. Their experience was relayed to the others. The other two paths, it was now clear, had vanished when they had selected the third.

"That's a problem for another day," Lyraea stated, her tone devoid of the usual casual demeanor. Drawing the Book of Amon II from Lysander's grasp, she held it in her hands for the first time. "Let's see what this has to offer."

The moment Lyraea took the book, an unbearable wave of pain washed over her. It was as if an invisible inferno consumed her, and Kairos witnessed her body convulse. The pain, however, subsided swiftly.

"I… think I survived," she stated, her voice slightly strained.

"What happened?" Zephyrus inquired, his expression concerned.

"Flashes of imagery, too numerous and too rapid for me to comprehend – past, present, future – all intertwined," Lyraea replied, her voice reflecting the profound impact of the experience.

She opened the book, initially flipping through the pages quickly. But then, she slowed, her eyes focusing on the words. After a moment, she spoke, her voice firm and serious, a stark contrast to the playful banter she normally employed. "This contains a map and a prophecy.

In the realm of shadows, where darkness reigns

A figure emerges, with heart and soul in chains

Rejected by many, with doors slammed shut and tight

Yet, in the silence, a spark takes flight

The winds of fate whisper secrets in his ear

Of a future uncertain, with paths unclear

A crossroads beckons, with choices to be made

Will he heed the call, or in darkness be swayed?

The eyes of the beholder see only its past

But the heart of the prophet sees a future to amass

A tale of redemption, of trials to be won

A hero's journey, beneath the light of the setting sun

The number nine shall mark the hour of his rise

When stars align, and the heavens open wide their eyes

A key shall be given, to unlock the gates of old

And the rejected one shall become the chosen, to unfold

Beware, for the path ahead is fraught with peril and strife

But the one who walks in faith shall find the light of not life

Tell me, what do you each wish to achieve, and why?"
