Chapter 11: The Quiet Before the Storm

The baby supply store was eerily silent. The shelves were stocked with colorful bottles, baby clothes, strollers, plush toys, and other baby items. Scattered products lay on the floor, likely knocked over when the store employees unexpectedly collapsed. The lights in the store hadn't completely gone out; a few ceiling lights flickered faintly, casting an eerie calm.

By the counter, a store clerk in a pink uniform lay on the ground, clutching an unopened package of pacifiers, her face pale, as if she had just been tidying up when she suddenly collapsed.

Alexa gently pushed open the glass door, and a faint jingle from the doorbell broke the silence before being swallowed by the quiet inside. She headed quickly to the baby food section, scanning the shelves for the right formula. She carefully picked up the cans of milk powder and checked the age range on the label to confirm the formula suitable for infants and young children to avoid choosing any unfavorable ingredients. After confirming that the selected milk powder is correct, Alexa puts the milk powder cans into her storage space one by one. She then browsed the store's other useful supplies, such as diapers, wipes and baby clothes, and put those items into storage as well.

Stores usually have warehouses. Alexa walked to the back and pushed the door open. This is indeed a warehouse, and there are a lot of goods inside. Alexa has put all these things into the storage space.

After leaving the storeroom, she looked at the fallen clerk, a trace of sympathy flashing across her face. She placed a signed check on the counter as a gesture to show she hadn't taken anything for free. After doing all this, she walked out of the baby products store. The wind chime behind the door rang again, and then Alexa gradually disappeared.

This was the 22nd baby supply store Alexa had visited. Since she'd never been a mother, her choice of formula was meticulous, delaying her quite a bit. At first, Anllela and Celine were interested in tagging along, but Alexa's careful selections soon tried their patience, so they waited outside on the motorcycles, no longer accompanying Alexa inside.

"We have searched 22 stores, now we go home?"

Alexa glanced at her watch—it was almost three. "Let's go home before Ander starts worrying."

The airport was shrouded in eerie silence; it was nine-fifteen in the morning, but it seemed the airport still hadn't fully awakened. Suddenly, a shrill scream pierced the silence—"Ah!" A passenger stumbled back, eyes fixed on a strange figure. Moments later, more cries of alarm spread like ripples, rousing the travelers around them.

The shrill screams quickly escalated into a chaotic symphony, as footsteps, frantic shouts, and cries of fear merged into a scene of sudden disaster. The newly awakened looked around in bewilderment, unaware of what was happening, until someone shouted in panic, "Zombies! They're zombies!" Hearing this, the surrounding chaos intensified as travelers began to scatter, shoving, shouting, their terrified expressions reflected on every panicked face.

Suddenly, a piercing scream sliced through the noise in the terminal, and the crowd's uproar transformed into frantic yells and shouts as people rushed toward the exits. A mass of mysterious creatures was closing in—zombies, stripped of their humanity, hunting the living as if only destruction could satiate their hunger.

Amidst the turmoil, Maja Strojek felt dizzy as she slowly opened her eyes on the cold floor, looking around. Her blurred vision gradually sharpened, and she realized she was in the middle of a disaster. The screams and clamor around her made her heart race, her mind a chaotic swirl.

"Maja! Wake up!" A familiar voice rang out, and she looked up to see the captain's face, stricken with terror and urgency. He hurriedly helped her up, saying anxiously, "We need to move! It's not safe here!" Without waiting for a response, he pushed her toward the emergency exit.

"But—but—" Maja's gaze drifted over the captain's shoulder, where she saw a group of zombies lunging toward them.

"Don't mind me! Run!" The captain's voice was firm and powerful amid the noise. His eyes were locked on Maja's, and then, with resolute determination, he turned to face the zombies, fighting them off. "Go!" he shouted one last time before being overwhelmed by the zombies' grasping claws.

Maja's heart wrenched, and tears welled up in her eyes. She choked out, "Captain!" But she knew she couldn't stop. The captain's sacrifice demanded that she move forward; she had to survive.

Wiping away her tears, she stumbled after the crowd of flight attendants. Just then, a zombie leapt out from the side, attacking one of the flight attendant. She screamed in terror, and the first officer rushed to shield her, pushing the zombie away but was seized by another zombie that bit into his neck.

"First officer!" The flight attendant's cry was filled with terror, but he turned back and yelled, "Run! Don't look back!"

Seeing the first officer consumed by the horde, Maja's eyes brimmed with tears again, but she dared not linger and continued toward the airport exit. Just as she was about to reach it, she felt a strong shove, sending her stumbling backward.

"You bastard!"Maja was horrified to find that it was the middle-aged man who tried to pursue her at the airport before. He pushed her towards the zombies without hesitation, trying to use her to attract them and give himself a chance to escape.

A zombie's claw narrowly missed her as she scrambled to regain her balance, her heart pounding like thunder in her ears. She fought down her terror, steadied herself, ran forward, and pushed the middle-aged man away, and rushed towards the exit.

Finally, she burst out of the terminal, into an open parking lot. But the danger was far from over—several zombies were wandering the lot, converging in her direction. Maja knew she had to find her car quickly and get out of there. She dodged left and right, occasionally kicking away zombies that came too close, even picking up random debris from the ground to throw at them and buy herself time.

Finally, she found the car parked in the corner. She got into the car in a panic, locked the door, and held the steering wheel with trembling hands. She took a deep breath and tried to calm down, but when she tried to start the car, she found no movement from the engine.

"No… this can't be!" She frantically searched around the car, only to realize—she'd forgotten to insert the key.

"Calm down, Maja, calm down…" she muttered, breathing heavily as she forced herself to stay composed. She inserted the key, turned the ignition, and the engine finally roared to life, bringing a wave of relief.

But at that moment, several zombies were already pressing against the windows, pounding on the glass in a frenzy to get inside. Maja stared at their twisted faces, took a deep breath, and pressed the gas pedal, pulling out of the parking spot.

The bloodstains and fingerprints on the car window were gradually thrown away with the speed of the car. She looked at the airport gradually fading away in the rearview mirror in horror, with a determined light shining in her eyes.

"I have to survive," she whispered, gripping the steering wheel tightly as she drove determinedly toward home.

Dim light gently filtered through the clinic window, mingling with the pungent smell of medicine and the metallic scent in the air. Priyanka slowly opened her eyes, her vision blurred, and it felt like the darkness she had experienced just before losing consciousness was still lingering in her mind. Her fingers trembled slightly as she tried to grab onto something to support herself, only to realize she was still sitting in the clinic chair.

"What's... happening here?" she furrowed her brows, her voice weak as if whispering to herself.

Beside her, Dorothy moved, slowly lifting her head from the floor, her eyes filled with confusion and bewilderment. "Doctor... what... just happened?" Her voice trembled, clearly still not fully awake.

"I don't know either..." Priyanka pressed her fingers to her temples, trying to recall the moments before she fainted. Just as they were still processing the sudden confusion, a piercing scream suddenly came from outside the clinic, as though someone was struggling in extreme fear.

Both of them snapped awake and exchanged a shocked glance. Priyanka cautiously stood up and slowly walked toward the clinic door. "Dorothy... did you hear that?"

"Of course I did. That... that sound doesn't seem right..." Dorothy immediately stood up nervously, following Priyanka and huddling into herself.

Priyanka cautiously gripped the doorknob, gently opening a small crack, and immediately drew in a sharp breath. The scene outside the door instantly tore apart her sanity. In the hallway, several pale-faced, stiff-moving zombies were growling as they lunged at the patients waiting for treatment. Their eyes had lost the spark of life, seemingly only driven by primal hunger.

"What... what is this?" Dorothy covered her mouth, her voice muffled, but still trembling uncontrollably.

Priyanka quickly closed the door, leaning against it, trying to calm herself. "We need to find a way to get out of here... but..."

Before she could finish her thoughts, one of her patients, an overweight middle-aged woman, suddenly woke up and groggily shouted, "Doctor! What's going on?" Her voice abruptly broke the brief silence.
