Chapter 25: A Flicker of Hope in the Chaos

They rushed into a store to scavenge for supplies, but found that all the food had been taken. Only a few packs of cigarettes and lighters remained. Melody, no stranger to smoking, lit a cigarette and exhaled a puff of smoke, calmly observe the situation outside.

"There's no food or water here. It's not a good hiding place," she murmured.

Mila nodded. "We need to find a house. Maybe there'll be supplies, and we can hide from the zombies there."

Melody agreed. After finishing her cigarette, they left the store and began searching the streets for a suitable house. As they continued, the zombies drew closer again. Melody scanned the area, and suddenly she spotted a house surrounded by a high wall. She quickly sprinted toward it, stepped on the wall with one foot, and climbed over the wall with great skill.

But Mila was afraid and couldn't climb. Melody gently reassured her. "I won't leave you. You run back a few steps, and when you come over, you extend your hand to me, put one foot on the wall, grab the wall with the other hand, and push yourself up."

Mila, tearful, followed the instructions and managed to climb the wall just as the zombies closed in. After coming up, she hugged Melody excitedly and said, "I must marry you!"

Melody pinched her cheek, smiling. "Okay."

But their joy didn't last long. As they jumped down from the wall, two zombies lunged at them from inside the house. They screamed and rushed out the door. Mila shouted alertly as she ran: "Watch out!" Melody reacted, kicking a zombie away as they fled once again.

As the sunset cast its fading light, they ran as fast as they could on the streets, unconsciously losing their way. Eventually, they found another house. Melody first asked Mila to climb over the wall with step on her back and then followed her in.

This time, they finally found some food. Although it was only enough for one meal, it was enough to satisfy them.

Inside the house, Melody found a first aid kit and carefully treated Mila's knee injury to prevent infection.

After dinner, Mila used her phone to call her mother, Camila Morrone. The phone beeped as the signal was weak, but it finally connected. Her mother's voice, tense but caring: "Mila! Are you okay?"

Mila held the phone, her eyes reddened. Her voice was a mix of exhaustion and reassurance. "Mom, I'm with Melody. We're safe for now. We found some food and we'll stay here tonight. You have to protect yourself too, okay?"

Her mother sighed on the other end, her voice trembling. "I will. You two be careful. This world... it's just become..."

Before Camila could say more, the call was cut off due to the weak signal. Mila put the phone down, a sense of disappointment and fatigue in her eyes. Melody, sitting next to her, gently patted her shoulder and gave a faint smile. "We'll be fine. You know we always find a way."

Mila nodded, silent for a moment, then gave a small smile of gratitude. Melody then took out her phone, hesitated briefly, and dialed her mother's brother's wife Georgina Mazzeo. When the call connected, her voice was cool and calm. "I'm safe for now. Nothing to worry about. Okay, that's all."

Georgina seemed to want to say something, but Melody quickly hung up. She sighed softly, not saying anything more, then put the phone back in her pocket, her expression still calm.

As night fell, the two of them sealed the door and windows of the room to prepare for rest. Outside, the occasional low growl of zombies echoed, and the unsettling sound of metal clashing added to the tension. Mila curled up next to Melody, whispering, "Melody, I'm still so scared... Do you think there will ever be a chance for life to return to normal?"

Melody paused, gazing out at the pitch-black sky. After a moment, she replied softly, "We don't know what the future holds, but I'll stay with you until we find a safe place. We have to keep hope. That's the most important thing, understand?"

Mila nodded, slowly closing her eyes, trying to fall asleep. But her mind was filled with too many worries, preventing her from resting. She opened her eyes again, looked at Melody right beside her, hesitated for a moment, and then leaned in to kiss her. Melody was startled awake, but Mila took this opportunity to stick out her tongue and stir it in Melody's mouth.

Melody is not a girl who follows the rules. She has also seen same-sex love in adult movies, and she is quite curious about it. But she wasn't sure what Mila meant, so she pushed her away gently and asked, "Are you serious?"

Mila nodded shyly and said, "I said I would marry you."

"I agreed at the time."

After confirming Mila's intention, Melody started to kiss her passionately, kissing her lips, her earlobes, her neck, and continued...

The next morning, sunlight streamed through the broken window and into the room. In the faint light, Mila rubbed her eyes, waking up to find that Melody had already sat by the window, smoking and staring at the street outside, holding their only "weapon" — a metal rod.

"Good morning, Melody," Mila yawned as she sat up.

Melody turned around and smiled, nodding, "Good morning. Are you ready to continue our adventure?"

Mila gave a bitter smile and said, "What else can we do? We can't just starve to death here."

Melody reached out to help her up, they prepared to leave the here. Their food was nearly gone, which meant they had to go on the run again to find a new hiding place and food. Just as they stepped outside, Mila suddenly slipped and twisted her right foot, almost unable to stand due to the pain.

"My foot... I think it's twisted," Mila frowned and gritted her teeth, trying to endure the pain.

Without hesitation, Melody bent down and helped Mila up, her tone firm, "Don't worry, I'm here. We'll find a safe place, and we'll find food and water." She comforted her softly while helping Mila move forward slowly.

The two walked cautiously down the street, nervously watching their surroundings, careful not to speak loudly for fear of attracting zombies. Just as they neared an alley, a deep male voice called out from the entrance, "Come over here! It's safe!"

They looked up to see a man in a police uniform, about thirty years old, waving his hand to signal them to come over. Melody wasted no time and helped Mila jog towards him. The man quickly pulled them into a bookstore in the alley.

Inside the bookstore, there were a dozen or so survivors, some sitting in corners, others whispering about escape plans. Officer Tom led them to a corner of the store, offering them some water and food, and whispered, "You both look exhausted. Rest for a while."

Mila nodded gratefully, taking a sip of water, feeling her throat finally relieved a little. Just as they relaxed, Mila noticed a few young men standing at the other end of the bookstore. Two of them were looking at her and Melody with malicious intent. She recognized one of them as one of the gangsters who had harassed them on the street the day before. He was whispering with his accomplices, wearing a sinister smile.

The gangster slowly walked over and provocatively said, "So, what's it like? Finally fallen into our hands?"

Officer Tom frowned and stood up, sternly warning, "This is a shelter, don't cause trouble, understand?"

The gangsters exchanged looks, their faces unhappy, but clearly hesitant. Reluctantly, they turned and walked back to the corner.

Just as the bookstore settled into a somewhat calm atmosphere, another survivor stumbled in, covered in dust and pale.

"Are you okay?" Tom handed him a bottle of water. "You can rest here, we'll figure out how to leave this place."

"You want to leave?" A survivor asked Officer Tom.

"Yes," Tom said. "I want to go out and scout the area, and maybe find some food and water. Anyone willing to come with me?"

The survivors lowered their heads, trying to reduce one's sense of existence. But a few gangster had realized the situation and thought that staying here was a dead end.

"We'll go with you," five gangsters holding steel pipes stood up and said.

Tom nodded. "Alright, let's go."

After Tom and the five gangsters left, the recently arrived survivor panted as he nervously found a corner to sit down, lowering his head and saying nothing. The man quietly rolled up his pants leg, secretly checking a wound on his calf — a deep scratch that was oozing blood. He anxiously looked around, trying to hide the wound, his heart racing.

As time passed, the man's wound started to turn black, and he began to feel intense pain and an unusual hunger. Soon, his eyes became vacant, his breathing quickened, and then he suddenly let out a chilling scream, lunging at a nearby survivor, biting down fiercely.

The survivor screamed in pain, and the bookstore erupted into chaos as everyone fled in terror. Mila saw one of the gangsters almost get caught by a zombie. In a panic, she pulled him away just in time, saving him from being bitten. The thug looked at Mila with a look of gratitude.

Amid the chaos, Melody helped the injured Mila and the gangster escape the bookstore. Just as a zombie was about to pounce on Mila, the thug, gritting his teeth, decided to go back to save them. He pushed Melody and Mila aside with all his strength, but was caught by the zombies and lost his life in seconds. Mila, choking on her emotions, watched his last moments, feeling a mix of emotions, but was eventually pulled along by Melody to keep running.

As night fell again, the two of them, exhausted, leaned against a wall, breathing heavily, their eyes glowing with exhaustion yet determination.
