Chapter 4: United Against the Beast
Leo settled into the simple but welcoming surroundings, feeling a sense of hope and determination. He knew that his journey was far from over, but for the first time in a long while, he felt a glimmer of optimism about the future. The woman, whose name was Sarah, led him to a small tent, where a hot meal was waiting for him. The aroma of roasted meat and steaming vegetables wafted through the air, making his stomach growl with anticipation.
As he ate, Leo felt a sense of gratitude towards these strangers who had taken him in and offered him shelter. The food was plain but nourishing, and he savored each bite, feeling his strength and energy returning. He knew that he would have to prove himself, to earn their trust and respect, but for now, he was just grateful for the kindness they had shown him.
As he finished his meal, Sarah smiled at him and said, "You're safe now, Leo. You're among friends. Get some rest, and we'll talk more in the morning." Leo nodded, feeling a sense of exhaustion wash over him. He lay down on the makeshift bed, feeling the softness of the blanket and the warmth of the fire. The sound of crackling flames and the murmur of voices outside the tent lulled him into a deep sleep.
Waking up from his slumber, Leo first had to sink in the fact that he was back in civilization. 'What you did yesterday was risky. I didn't caution you because you had already long reached your limit. Next time, be more careful and not so trusting of other people,' Lin warned him, snapping Leo back to reality. The reminder of his vulnerability lingered in his mind as he sat up, the warmth of the fire and the comfort of the tent offering a stark contrast to the harshness of the world outside.
Approaching him was the woman who had welcomed him the previous day. Now, he could have a good look at her. Sarah was well-proportioned physically, and beneath the dirt on her face, she was a beauty. Her brown eyes looked at Leo with sincere kindness as she asked, 'How was your night, traveler?'
Standing up, Leo expressed his gratitude with a respectful nod. 'Sleeping under a roof is a luxury I haven't had in a long time,' he replied. Since Sarah was there, Leo decided to strike up a conversation. 'Sarah,' he began, trying to gather his thoughts, 'I appreciate your hospitality. Can you tell me more about why you and the others aren't inside the city?'
Sarah sighed, her expression a mix of weariness and determination. 'It's a long story,' she said, settling down beside him. 'After the completion of the city, the government imposed strict entry requirements. To gain access, one needs to acquire at least seven gene cores. These are crystals left behind by monster-level mutants.' The fire crackled, casting flickering shadows on the tent walls as Sarah continued, 'The government allows the poor commoners to linger around the city because of the purified air it produces. Every month, different excavation groups, made up of commoners, venture out to hunt these mutated monsters in order to acquire the gene cores. It's a dangerous task, but it's the only way for us to gain entry into the city and hope for a better life.'
She also told him that every few months, travelers like him arrived at the city. It was common knowledge that travelers who could survive the outskirts were highly beneficial to a group. This explained why they weren't surprised to see him and why they had been so nice. The resilience and skills of travelers made them valuable allies in the ongoing struggle for survival.
Leo reached and caressed a bulging part of his gown, thinking to himself, 'Good thing I listened to Lin's advice and dug these things out of those abominations.' Now, unlike others, Leo just needed one more kill in order to proceed into the city.
'Actually, you're in luck, traveler. Our group is just about to start our hunting in a day's time. Would you be interested?' Sarah asked, her eyes reflecting both hope and determination.
'Yes, I would love nothing more,' Leo affirmed. Sarah was very pleased with his reply and excused herself to go tell the others.
At her departure, Leo sighed. Though he could go hunting alone, he knew he had to show his gratitude to these people. Leo lay back down, savoring the brief moment of rest, knowing it was a luxury he wouldn't be having for a while.
Later in the day, Sarah returned with some clothes and a pair of shoes. Her face was alight with happiness. After inquiring, Leo discovered that another traveler had arrived—a girl of his age. She had also agreed to join them for the excavation. Sarah was ecstatic, exclaiming how Lady Luck was on their side. Having a single traveler was a luxury, but having two was unprecedented. Before she left, she told Leo that the group would be leaving first thing the following morning and that he should be prepared. After imparting this information, she left, her excitement palpable.
That night, Leo could hardly sleep. His mind was racing with thoughts of the upcoming hunt and the new traveler who had joined their group. The promise of a better future within the city seemed almost within reach. He knew that the journey ahead would be fraught with danger, but he was determined to see it through.
As dawn broke, Leo gathered his belongings and prepared for the day's expedition. He met up with Sarah and the rest of the group at the village's edge. The new traveler, a girl about his age with striking green eyes and an air of quiet determination, was already there. She introduced herself as Maya.
'I'm Leo,' he said, offering a small smile. 'It's good to have another traveler with us.' Maya nodded, her expression serious. 'We'll need all the help we can get out there.' Sarah gave them both a reassuring smile. 'Stay close, listen to each other, and we'll get through this. Remember, we need to collect those gene cores to gain entry into the city.'
The group set off, moving with purpose through the rugged terrain. The air was crisp and cool, filled with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves. Leo could feel the weight of his pack on his back, the familiar comfort of his gear a reminder of the journey ahead.
As they walked, the landscape shifted and changed, the trees growing taller and the underbrush thicker. The group pushed on, their footsteps quiet on the damp soil. Leo's senses were on high alert, his eyes scanning the surroundings for any sign of danger.
Hours passed, and they finally came across signs of mutated beasts. The ground was littered with tracks and broken foliage, evidence of recent activity. Leo's heart pounded in his chest, but he steeled himself for what lay ahead.
Suddenly, a guttural roar echoed through the trees. The group sprang into action, weapons drawn and ready. Leo and Maya exchanged a glance, a silent understanding passing between them. This was it the moment of truth.
A massive, grotesque creature burst forth from the underbrush, its eyes gleaming with malice. It had a twisted, sinewy body covered in mottled scales, with long, jagged claws and a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. The beast moved with a terrifying agility, its movements fluid and predatory.
As the beast lunged at them, Leo's instincts kicked in. He felt the surge of his untapped power, but he knew he had to hold back, trying to keep a low profile. With precise movements, he dodged the creature's attacks, striking it with controlled force that left the beast reeling but not defeated.
Maya, wielding a short sword, moved with remarkable skill and precision. She engaged the beast in close combat, her blade flashing in the dim light as she landed quick, devastating blows. Her agility and technique were impressive, each strike calculated to exploit the creature's vulnerabilities.
The battle was fierce, with the group working together seamlessly. Leo and Maya coordinated their attacks, creating opportunities for the others to strike. The creature roared in frustration, its regeneration struggling to keep up with the relentless assault.
Sweat dripped down Leo's face as he fought, every muscle tensed with effort. He could feel the power within him, a raw, untamed force that he carefully controlled. With a powerful leap, he delivered a series of precise blows, weakening the beast further.
Maya took the opportunity to deliver the final strike, her short sword piercing the creature's heart. The beast let out a final, agonized roar before collapsing to the ground in a lifeless heap.
As the dust settled, Leo looked around at his companions, their faces etched with exhaustion and relief. Sarah approached him, her eyes bright with gratitude. 'We did it. One step closer to our goal.' Leo nodded, a sense of accomplishment washing over him. They still had a long way to go, but for the first time, the future seemed attainable.
As they collected the precious gene core from the fallen beast, Leo knew that this journey was just the beginning of their fight for a better life. The city, with its promise of safety and security, was within reach, but he knew that there would be more challenges ahead, more battles to fight. He steeled himself for what lay ahead, ready to face whatever dangers awaited them on their journey.
