Chapter 50: Chapter 50: Echoes of the Past
The camp buzzed with activity as Kael prepared for the next move. Scouts were dispatched to locate the Fang's movements, and messengers rode toward the northern outpost with the decoded message. Every second felt precious, yet the waiting gnawed at Kael's patience.
In the dim light of his tent, Kael examined the Fang's map again. The Shadowed One, the Gate, the blood moon—it all pointed to a larger scheme, but the missing pieces kept him on edge.
Erys entered, her steps quiet but purposeful. "You've been staring at that map for hours. Found anything useful?"
"Just more questions," Kael admitted. "What do you make of this?" He pointed to a marked symbol—a jagged spiral etched into the map near the edge of the known territories.
Erys leaned in, her expression darkening. "That's the Black Hollow. It's a cursed place, if you believe the stories."
"Stories often have some truth to them," Kael said. "What kind of curse?"
"Old magic," Erys replied. "They say the Hollow was once a thriving city, but its people angered the gods. Now, it's a wasteland filled with shadows and echoes of the dead."
Kael frowned. "If the Fang is trying to awaken an ancient power, the Black Hollow could be connected. We need to investigate."
Erys crossed her arms. "It's a gamble. Even if the Hollow holds answers, getting in and out won't be easy."
Kael's resolve hardened. "Then we'll take the risk. Gather the team."

The journey to the Black Hollow was grueling. The terrain grew more treacherous with every mile, the air heavy with an unnatural stillness. By the time the group reached the outskirts, even Ian was silent, his usual wit replaced by nervous glances at the desolate landscape.
The Black Hollow loomed before them—a sprawling expanse of crumbling ruins shrouded in mist. Strange whispers drifted through the air, carrying words they couldn't understand. Lira shivered. "This place feels wrong."
"It is wrong," Erys said, her hand on her blade. "Stay sharp."
The group moved cautiously through the ruins, their footsteps echoing eerily. The buildings were twisted and malformed, as if warped by some malevolent force. Shadows flickered at the edges of their vision, vanishing when they turned to look.
"Does anyone else see that?" Ian whispered.
"Don't acknowledge them," Erys warned. "They feed on fear."
Kael's focus remained on the center of the Hollow, where the jagged spiral symbol was carved into the ground. As they approached, a low hum filled the air, growing louder with each step.
The spiral pulsed with a faint, dark light. Kael knelt beside it, his hand hovering over the markings. "This is it. The Gate."
Lira frowned. "But how does it work? There's no mechanism, no—"
A sudden burst of energy erupted from the spiral, throwing the group backward. Kael scrambled to his feet, his sword drawn as the shadows around them began to coalesce.
Figures emerged—warped, ethereal forms with glowing red eyes. Their movements were jerky, as if they were struggling against invisible chains.
"Wraiths," Erys said grimly. "They're bound to the Gate. We've been noticed."
The wraiths attacked without warning, their forms shifting and twisting as they lashed out. Kael's sword passed through one, but the creature reformed instantly, its claws slashing toward him.
"They can't be killed!" Ian shouted, panic creeping into his voice.
"They can be bound," Erys countered, drawing a vial of shimmering liquid from her belt. She hurled it at one of the wraiths, and it screamed as the liquid enveloped it, dragging it back into the shadows.
"Where did you get that?" Kael demanded, cutting down another wraith that seemed only momentarily stunned.
"Trade secrets," Erys said, tossing him another vial. "Use it wisely."
The group fought with everything they had, using the vials to contain the wraiths while avoiding their deadly claws. By the time the last wraith was subdued, the group was battered and exhausted.
Kael turned back to the Gate, his mind racing. "We need to destroy this."
"Not yet," Erys said, placing a hand on his arm. "This Gate is a key to the Fang's plans. If we destroy it without understanding how it works, we lose our chance to stop them."
Lira nodded reluctantly. "She's right. We need more information. The scholars at the northern outpost might be able to help."
Kael hated the thought of leaving the Gate intact, but he knew they had no choice. "Fine. But we set traps around it. If the Fang comes, they won't find it undefended."
---
As they prepared to leave the Hollow, Ian lingered near the Gate, his expression troubled. "This thing... it feels alive."
Kael placed a hand on his shoulder. "Stay focused. We'll figure this out."
Ian nodded, though the unease didn't leave his face.
The group began their trek back to camp, the whispers of the Hollow fading into the distance. But Kael couldn't shake the feeling that their encounter with the Gate was only the beginning. The blood moon was drawing closer, and the Fang's dark plans were far from over.
