The Everchanging Realm

Chapter 11: Chapter 11: The Calling of the Lost

Kai spent the next few days in a daze, wandering the corridors of the sanctuary, unable to shake the weight of the vision that still lingered in his mind. The past, the First Ones, their city—everything seemed so distant, so unreal, yet the truth of it was undeniable. The knowledge and the power he had glimpsed were now a part of him, inescapable and overwhelming.

Despite Liora's reassurances and the Elder's cryptic guidance, he couldn't help but feel lost. The weight of responsibility felt suffocating at times. He had seen what the First Ones had created, and what had been lost. He now carried their legacy, their hopes—and their failures. How was he, a mere boy from a modern world, supposed to restore what had been broken so long ago?

It was during one of his restless walks that he found himself standing before an ancient door deep within the sanctuary. It was unlike any other door he had seen, not just in its age but in the aura it exuded. The stone was smooth, its surface marked with intricate runes that pulsed faintly in the dim light. A strange sensation stirred in his chest, as though the door itself was calling to him.

Instinctively, he reached out and placed his hand against the cold stone. The moment his palm made contact, the runes flared to life, and the door groaned as though it hadn't been opened in centuries. The energy around him shifted, and Kai felt an overwhelming pull, as though something deep within him was stirring in response.

"Stop."

Liora's voice cut through the growing tension, and Kai turned to see her standing a few paces behind him, her expression unreadable. She didn't look surprised, but there was something in her eyes that made his heart race.

"Liora?" Kai asked, his voice hesitant. "What is this place?"

Liora's gaze softened, though the worry in her eyes remained. "It's an ancient chamber, one of the last remnants of the First Ones' legacy. I've been here before, but I never ventured beyond the door."

Kai frowned, glancing back at the door, which now seemed almost alive, its runes pulsing with a rhythm that matched the beating of his heart. "What's inside?"

Liora hesitated before stepping closer. "It is said that this door leads to the Sanctum of the Lost. A place where the First Ones kept their greatest secrets. Some believe it holds the knowledge needed to restore the balance, but it is also a place of great danger. Few have entered and even fewer have returned unchanged."

Kai's heart thudded in his chest. Danger? Knowledge? The allure of both was irresistible, yet the warning in Liora's voice echoed in his mind. This was not something to be taken lightly.

"Why haven't we opened it before?" Kai asked, his voice barely a whisper.

"Because," Liora said slowly, her eyes flickering with something Kai couldn't quite place, "it's not meant for everyone. Only those with the bloodline of the First Ones can access it. The power within the Sanctum will test you in ways you cannot even imagine."

Kai swallowed, the weight of her words sinking in. He knew the power inside him was ancient, something tied to the very fabric of the world itself. But now, he could feel it—the call of the Sanctum, beckoning him to step through the threshold.

The door seemed to pulse again, stronger this time. There was no denying it. The knowledge of the past, the answers he sought, were behind that door. But at what cost?

"I have to go," Kai said, the words slipping out before he could stop them. There was no turning back now. The power inside him, the calling from the past, it all pointed to this moment.

Liora's expression darkened, but she didn't stop him. Instead, she nodded, though her worry was evident. "Just remember, Kai. The power inside you is not a tool. It's a force that can consume you if you're not careful. Entering the Sanctum won't be like the trials you've faced so far. You'll have to face yourself in there."

"I understand," Kai replied, though he wasn't entirely sure he did. But the compulsion to move forward was too strong to ignore. The future of the realms, his destiny—everything depended on it.

With a final glance at Liora, he pushed the door open.

The moment the door creaked wide, the world around him seemed to vanish. There was no floor beneath his feet, no walls around him—just an endless expanse of swirling light and shadow. The air was thick with magic, and the energy of the place hummed in his veins, the power inside him reacting to the environment.

He stepped forward, unsure of what to expect. As he moved, the swirling light parted, revealing the Sanctum. It was a vast, ethereal space, filled with floating structures and strange, glowing orbs that seemed to pulse with their own energy. There were no walls, no clear boundaries—just an endless expanse of floating knowledge, as though the very essence of the First Ones' wisdom was suspended in time.

In the center of the room, there was a pedestal, and upon it rested a dark crystal, its surface swirling with shadowy energy. It was unlike anything Kai had ever seen—beautiful, yet terrifying. The power it radiated was immense, far beyond anything he had encountered.

But as he moved closer, something changed. A coldness settled in his chest, a tightening sensation that spread through his limbs. The closer he got to the crystal, the more the world seemed to bend around him. His vision blurred, and the shadows in the corners of the Sanctum seemed to grow darker, more alive.

A voice echoed in his mind—a voice ancient, yet familiar.

You are the last. The one chosen to wield the power of the First Ones. But the power is not yours alone to control. It belongs to the realms, to all that has been and all that will be. Do you understand the price of wielding it?

Kai's breath caught in his throat as the voice filled his mind. What price?

The balance is fragile. You will either restore it—or shatter it forever. The choice is yours.

The shadows around him grew thicker, swirling like a storm. Kai could feel the weight of the decision pressing down on him, the enormity of the choice ahead of him. To restore the realms, to take up the mantle of the First Ones—it would change everything. But what would he have to sacrifice? What would be lost in the process?

The dark crystal pulsed again, as though urging him to take the final step. The future of the realms, the power of the First Ones, the balance of the worlds—all rested in his hands.

Kai reached out, his fingers brushing the surface of the crystal.

And then, everything went black.
