The Forbidden Heir in This Cultivation World

Chapter 18: Chapter 17 : The Abyss Stirs

The forest loomed ominously as Tarezuchi and the group hurried back toward the burned village, Kota and his sister clutching each other tightly. Though they had saved the girl, the weight of the cloaked leader's parting words hung heavy over them like a storm cloud.

The once-faint whispers of the abyss now thrummed within Tarezuchi's mind, subtle but unrelenting. His grip on the Flameheart pendant tightened as its warmth seemed to pulse faintly against his chest.

"What's the plan now?" Kaida asked, his voice breaking the tense silence. He glanced at Tarezuchi. "We can't keep wandering aimlessly, waiting for the Ryokumo to strike again."

"We don't have the luxury of resting," Ryomi said, her voice sharp as she adjusted the girl's weight in her arms. "If they're targeting temples like that, there has to be a reason. We need to find out why."

"And how do you suggest we do that?" Kaida's tone was clipped. "We're barely holding together as it is."

"Enough," Tarezuchi said firmly, his voice carrying a rare edge. "Arguing isn't going to help. Ryomi's right—we need answers. And we won't find them standing around here."

The group fell silent, the tension palpable but unspoken. Kota tugged on Tarezuchi's sleeve, his voice small. "There's... there's another village nearby. Before all of this happened, Mama said they had a shrine there. Maybe they can help?"

Akiyo nodded, his hand resting on his warhammer. "It's worth a shot. We need allies and supplies if we're going to face the Ryokumo again."

Tarezuchi knelt beside Kota and his sister. "Can you lead us there?"

Kota hesitated before nodding. "It's not far. A day's walk, maybe less if we hurry."

"Then we move now," Ryomi said, her expression resolute.

---

The sun dipped below the horizon as they pushed through the dense forest, their surroundings growing darker and more oppressive with every step. Shadows seemed to dance between the trees, and the faint rustle of leaves set everyone on edge.

Tarezuchi's senses were heightened, his mind alert for any sign of danger. The Flameheart pendant pulsed steadily, its warmth a small comfort amidst the encroaching darkness.

Kaida fell into step beside him, his voice low. "You've been quiet. What's on your mind?"

Tarezuchi glanced at him, his expression unreadable. "The Ryokumo leader. Their power... it wasn't just cultivation. It felt ancient, like something beyond this world."

Kaida frowned. "You think they're drawing power from the abyss?"

"I don't know," Tarezuchi admitted. "But whatever it is, it's not something we can face without preparation."

Akiyo's voice called out from the front. "Hold up. Something's not right."

The group stopped, their weapons drawn as they scanned their surroundings. The forest was unnervingly silent, the usual sounds of insects and rustling leaves conspicuously absent.

Ryomi's grip on her daggers tightened. "We're being watched."

Before anyone could respond, a low growl echoed from the darkness. Tarezuchi turned just in time to see a pair of glowing red eyes emerge from the shadows. The creature that stepped into the moonlight was unlike anything he'd seen before—a massive wolf-like beast, its fur matted and black as night, with tendrils of dark energy writhing around its body.

"Abyssal hound," Ryomi muttered, her voice grim.

The beast snarled, baring jagged teeth that gleamed unnaturally in the dim light. Its eyes locked onto Tarezuchi, as if recognizing the power of the Flameheart pendant.

"Formation!" Kaida barked, drawing his swords and positioning himself in front of Kota and his sister.

The hound lunged without warning, its speed a blur as it targeted Tarezuchi. He barely had time to raise his blade, the force of the impact driving him back several steps.

"Keep it distracted!" Ryomi shouted, circling around the beast.

Akiyo charged forward, his warhammer swinging with enough force to crack the ground beneath them. The hound dodged nimbly, its movements unnaturally fluid as it lashed out with claws dripping with dark energy.

Kaida joined the fray, his twin swords flashing as they connected with the beast's side. The hound howled in pain, its body writhing as if the attack had disrupted its form.

Tarezuchi focused, drawing on the power of the Flameheart. The pendant's heat surged, flames licking along the edge of his blade. With a shout, he launched himself at the hound, his strike aimed directly at its glowing eyes.

The flames connected, and the beast recoiled, its howl shaking the very trees around them. But instead of retreating, the hound's form began to shift, its body growing larger as the dark energy surrounding it intensified.

"It's feeding off the abyss!" Ryomi called out, frustration evident in her voice. "We need to end this now!"

Tarezuchi gritted his teeth, the weight of the battle pressing down on him. The Flameheart's power flared brighter, but he knew it wouldn't be enough to destroy the hound outright.

"We'll need to combine our attacks," he said, his voice steady despite the chaos. "Akiyo, aim for its legs. Kaida, go for the neck. Ryomi and I will finish it off together."

The others nodded, their movements synchronized as they executed the plan. Akiyo's warhammer struck the hound's front leg, the force of the blow sending a shockwave through the ground. Kaida's swords followed, slicing through the dark tendrils that writhed around the beast's neck.

Tarezuchi and Ryomi moved in unison, their blades glowing with the combined power of fire and light. With a final, coordinated strike, they drove their weapons into the hound's chest, the impact releasing a blinding burst of energy.

The beast let out a deafening roar before collapsing, its body dissolving into a pool of shadow that seeped into the ground.

The forest fell silent once more, the oppressive darkness lifting slightly.

Tarezuchi exhaled heavily, his body trembling from the exertion. He glanced at the others, relieved to see them unharmed.

Kota and his sister emerged from their hiding spot, their eyes wide with awe and fear. "You... you killed it," Kota whispered.

Tarezuchi placed a reassuring hand on the boy's shoulder. "We'll keep you safe. I promise."

As they continued their journey toward the nearby village, Tarezuchi couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning. The abyss was stirring, and its whispers were growing louder. The battle against the Ryokumo and their dark power was far from over—but for now, they had won a small victory.

And in the heart of the forest, far from prying eyes, a faint red glow flickered briefly before fading into the shadows.
