The Forbidden Heir in This Cultivation World

Chapter 21: Chapter 20 : Echoes of the Abyss

The group emerged from the shrine's oppressive depths into the dim light of early morning, their footsteps heavy with exhaustion. The air outside felt thin but clean, a stark contrast to the stifling darkness they had just escaped. Tarezuchi paused at the edge of the shrine's threshold, his Flameheart pendant dim and cool against his chest.

"Let's rest," he said finally, his voice firm despite his fatigue. "We'll need clear minds to decide our next steps."

Ryomi slumped against a nearby boulder, cleaning her daggers methodically. "Clear minds, sure. But what about the part where the Abyss is still hungry? That doesn't sound like a solved problem to me."

"It's not," Kaida said bluntly, his twin swords still in hand as he scanned their surroundings. "The seal is holding—for now. But the Ryokumo will come back. And next time, they'll be ready for us."

Kota sat cross-legged on the grass, his sister resting her head on his shoulder. The boy looked pale, his hands trembling slightly from the strain of repairing the seal. "I don't know if I can do that again," he admitted softly.

"You won't have to," Tarezuchi said, kneeling beside him. "At least not alone. We'll figure out a way to strengthen the seal permanently. Together."

Kota nodded hesitantly, his sister squeezing his arm in silent support.

---

After a brief rest, the group gathered to discuss their next steps. The shrine loomed behind them, its once-intimidating aura now subdued but far from benign.

"We can't stay here," Akiyo said, leaning on his warhammer. "If the Ryokumo were tracking us, they'll send reinforcements. We need to move."

"And go where?" Ryomi countered. "We still don't know why they want this place—or what's buried beneath that seal."

Tarezuchi stared at the horizon, his mind racing. The words of the shadowy figure haunted him: *The power to unmake worlds.* What kind of force could lie beneath that altar? And why was the Ryokumo Alliance so desperate to claim it?

"We need answers," he said finally. "There has to be someone who knows about this shrine—its history, its purpose. Someone who can tell us what we're dealing with."

Kaida snorted. "And who exactly are we supposed to ask? It's not like ancient spirit seals and world-ending powers come with instruction manuals."

"There might be someone," Kota said hesitantly.

All eyes turned to the boy. He shifted uncomfortably under their gaze but continued, "My mother used to talk about a place called the Verdant Archives. She said it was where the ancients recorded their knowledge—everything from cultivation techniques to forbidden lore."

"The Verdant Archives?" Akiyo echoed. "I've heard of it. Supposedly hidden deep within the Emerald Forest, protected by barriers and beasts."

Ryomi frowned. "If it's so well-protected, how do we get in?"

Kota's sister, silent until now, spoke up. "Mother said the Flameheart pendant is a key. It can guide you to the archives—if you know how to use it."

Tarezuchi touched the pendant instinctively. It pulsed faintly under his fingers, as if responding to the girl's words. "Then that's where we'll go," he said decisively. "The Verdant Archives might be our only chance to understand what we're up against."

---

The journey to the Emerald Forest was long and arduous. The group traveled through rolling hills and dense thickets, their pace quick but cautious. Every so often, Tarezuchi would glance over his shoulder, half-expecting to see Ryokumo assassins in pursuit.

Despite the urgency of their mission, moments of levity broke the tension. Akiyo, ever the optimist, told exaggerated tales of his past battles, drawing reluctant smiles from even the stoic Kaida. Ryomi, on the other hand, took to teasing Tarezuchi about his newfound role as a "guardian of forbidden secrets."

"You're like one of those tragic heroes from the old legends," she said with a smirk. "Brooding, noble, and doomed to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence," Tarezuchi replied dryly, though a faint smile tugged at his lips.

Kota and his sister, though quiet, seemed to draw strength from the camaraderie of the group. The boy even began practicing basic cultivation techniques under Tarezuchi's guidance, his confidence slowly growing.

---

As they neared the Emerald Forest, the landscape began to change. Towering trees with emerald-green leaves cast dappled shadows over the ground, and the air grew thick with the scent of earth and moss. The forest seemed alive, its energy vibrant and humming with an ancient presence.

"This place gives me the creeps," Ryomi muttered, her hand resting on the hilt of her dagger.

"It's beautiful," Kota's sister said softly, her wide eyes taking in the towering canopy above.

Tarezuchi stopped at the forest's edge, the Flameheart pendant glowing faintly once more. "The archives are in there somewhere," he said. "But we'll have to be careful. If the stories are true, this forest is as dangerous as it is beautiful."

Kaida stepped forward, his swords drawn. "Dangerous or not, we don't have a choice. Let's move."

---

The forest was a labyrinth of twisting paths and hidden dangers. The group encountered strange, glowing plants that emitted a soothing yet disorienting light. At one point, they crossed paths with a massive, serpent-like creature that slithered silently through the underbrush, its scales shimmering like liquid silver.

"Keep your eyes open," Tarezuchi warned. "This forest isn't just alive—it's watching us."

As if to confirm his words, a low growl echoed through the trees. The group froze, weapons drawn as a pair of glowing yellow eyes emerged from the shadows.

A massive beast stepped into view, its body resembling a tiger but covered in scales instead of fur. Its fangs gleamed like ivory, and its tail lashed the ground, leaving scorch marks in its wake.

"Another test, huh?" Kaida said, a smirk playing on his lips. "I was starting to get bored."

The beast roared, its claws digging into the earth as it prepared to pounce.

"Spread out!" Tarezuchi shouted, his Flameheart pendant flaring to life.

The battle was fierce, each member of the group fighting with everything they had. Ryomi's daggers flashed as she darted around the beast, drawing its attention while Akiyo delivered devastating blows with his warhammer. Kaida's twin swords danced in the air, their strikes precise and relentless.

But it was Tarezuchi who landed the final blow, his pendant blazing as he unleashed a surge of energy that sent the beast crashing to the ground.

As the creature dissolved into motes of light, the forest seemed to sigh, its energy shifting.

"The path is open," Kota whispered, pointing ahead.

A faint, glowing trail appeared before them, leading deeper into the forest.

"Let's go," Tarezuchi said, his voice steady despite his exhaustion. "The Verdant Archives are waiting."
