Chapter 36: Chapter 35 : Fractures and Resolve
The aftermath of the battle weighed heavily on the group as they trudged through the forest. The air was thick with exhaustion and unspoken tension. Their victory over Seishin and his warriors felt hollow, their survival a narrow escape rather than a triumph. Each step forward was a reminder of how close they had come to falling.
The first rays of dawn pierced the canopy above, casting golden light on their weary faces. They stopped at the edge of a rocky outcrop overlooking a vast valley, its rivers gleaming like silver threads in the distance.
"We need to rest," Rina said, her voice soft but firm. "We can't keep pushing like this."
Akiyo dropped his warhammer to the ground with a heavy thud. "Agreed. My arms feel like they're going to fall off."
Ryomi scanned the horizon, her sharp eyes narrowing. "Resting is a risk. Seishin might regroup faster than we expect."
"And if we keep moving like this, we'll be too weak to fight back," Kaida countered, his tone clipped.
Tarezuchi remained silent, standing apart from the group as he stared into the distance. The Flameheart pendant hung heavily around his neck, its light dim but steady.
---
The group settled into a clearing at the base of the outcrop, the soft murmur of a nearby stream offering a semblance of peace. Kota set to work gathering firewood while Rina tended to their injuries with her light magic.
"You took quite the beating," she said, her hands glowing as she healed a deep gash on Kaida's arm.
"Better me than someone else," Kaida replied, wincing slightly as the wound closed.
Akiyo leaned against a tree, watching them with a faint smirk. "You're too noble for your own good, Kaida."
Kaida shot him a look but said nothing, his focus remaining on Rina's work.
---
Ryomi approached Tarezuchi, her footsteps silent against the forest floor. "You're awfully quiet," she said, crossing her arms. "What's on your mind?"
Tarezuchi didn't turn to face her. "I'm trying to figure out what we're missing."
"Missing?"
He nodded, his grip tightening on the pendant. "Seishin was stronger than I expected. If it weren't for the pendant, we wouldn't have made it. But relying on it alone won't be enough next time."
Ryomi studied him for a moment before speaking. "You're not wrong. But you're not in this alone, Tarezuchi. Don't forget that."
"I know," he said quietly. "But the responsibility still feels… overwhelming."
Ryomi placed a hand on his shoulder, her expression softer than usual. "Then share it. That's why we're here."
---
As the day wore on, the group began to relax, their laughter and banter returning in small doses. Akiyo's exaggerated tales of past battles earned a few chuckles, and even Ryomi cracked a rare smile.
But beneath the surface, tension lingered.
---
Later that evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, Tarezuchi gathered the group around the fire. The flickering flames cast shadows on their faces, highlighting the weariness in their eyes.
"We need to talk," he began, his voice steady but serious.
The group fell silent, their gazes fixed on him.
"What happened last night showed us how far we still have to go," Tarezuchi continued. "We've come a long way, but Seishin's strength was a wake-up call. We're not ready for what's coming."
Kaida nodded. "He fought us like we were nothing. That kind of power… it's not something we can face unprepared."
"Then what do you suggest?" Rina asked, her tone calm but curious.
"We need to train," Tarezuchi said firmly. "Not just individually, but as a team. If we don't learn to fight together, to use our strengths as one, we won't stand a chance."
Akiyo grinned, cracking his knuckles. "Finally, some proper training. I'm in."
Ryomi raised an eyebrow. "As long as it's more useful than sparring with you, Akiyo."
"Hey!"
The group chuckled, the brief moment of levity easing some of the tension.
---
Tarezuchi stood and drew a rough map in the dirt with a stick. "The pendant is guiding us west, toward the Ruins of Eryndor. If the Keeper was right, there's another piece of the puzzle there. But it's not going to be easy."
"What do we know about the ruins?" Kota asked, his brow furrowed.
"Only that they're ancient and dangerous," Tarezuchi replied. "If the Ascendant Seal was hidden in the Veil, there's no telling what might be waiting for us in Eryndor."
"Sounds like fun," Akiyo said with a grin.
Kaida's expression was more serious. "We'll need to be at our best. No more near misses like last night."
---
The group agreed to set out at dawn, their spirits bolstered by a renewed sense of purpose. But as the fire burned low and the others drifted to sleep, Tarezuchi remained awake, his thoughts heavy.
The Flameheart pendant pulsed faintly against his chest, its glow a reminder of the burden he carried. He reached up to touch it, his fingers brushing against the cool metal.
"We'll make it," he whispered to himself, his resolve hardening. "We have to."
Above him, the stars glittered like scattered diamonds, their light unwavering against the darkness of the night.
