The God of calamity’s wife book 2: return of the 13th

Chapter 16: 17 counting on Carlston

The driver of the car returned to the city and parked in his driveway. He sighed and shook his head. Whatever the Alpha wanted with that girl would probably get her killed.

She was in way over her head.

He opened the front door and tossed his keys onto his countertop and grabbed a soda from the refrigerator, walking past a happy picture of a family, smiling at the beach.

If only it were that simple to make the world a better place, he thought.

This gang thing had been meant to be a gig to get him some extra money, the werewolves had used to be good people before the war and he knew the previous alpha from college.

But now, it was mostly him trying to avoid saying anything when he watched horrors going on around him.

Vampires had brought this upon themselves, the Alpha said on the daily, but these citizens really weren't part of the kingdom Alastor ruled. There used to be many break offs here and there, hiding amongst humans. But the werewolves could smell them, so now they couldn't hide any longer.

He turned on the television and leaned back in his lazy boy chair, then suddenly he heard a knock at the door.

He sighed as he sat up and began walking towards the door.

Another knock came just as he opened it.

"We need to talk." His next door neighbor said enthusiastically.

"Hey Sirius. How are you doing man? How's your wife?"

He looked around nervously and asked, "you don't have visitors do you?"

"No, why?"

Sirius came inside and beckoned him to shut off the tv and sit down.

"Carlston, I can't explain right now very much, but I need help getting into Pembrookeshire."

"What? Why?"

Sirius showed him his police badge and Carlston's eyes went wide, "Oh no no no! Sirius! You have to go now! They are looking for you, man I can't be seen with you!"

"I knew you knew something Carlston you never disappoint me." He said excitedly.

"I help you find kidnap victim targets Sirius, not this. This will get me killed." He said shaking his head. "I can't keep helping you with your police work."

"C'mon Carlston, this time it's serious. I have to get in there, I can't explain why." He begged.

"Listen, if it's important enough, you have to tell me why you would ever want to get in there. Police don't do rescue missions past the border, why would you risk your life like that?"

Sirius looked nervously at the floor, "It's because I'm also a vampire."

"So????" Carlston said, "it's not like I didn't know that!"

"I wasn't finished!" Sirius snapped, "it's because I'm a vampire that we have a different culture towards marriage and that involves dropping a bit of blood into our spouse's mouth and then biting them. Then they have to bite us, and we mix blood-"

"C'mon man, I don't want to hear about your vampire kissy kissy stuff. Just get to the point."

"Well, to complete the bonding process you have to have sex, so as you know, me and Maeve aren't exactly done with that process."

"What are you trying to tell me your finally going to be a father?"

Sirius glared at him.

"I guess not, sorry I interrupted, continue."

"Well once we put a drop of blood into someone's mouth, the bonding process begins, and we can feel each others feelings. And if you proceed to do the rest, then you will be together through life and death and reincarnation. So it has been this reoccurrence that I have been having nightmares a lot about killing people."

"Police stuff." Carlston nodded.

"No."

"Vampire stuff then."

"Quit interrupting me and let me explain!"

"Fine fine fine." Carlston said again. "What does this have to do with me needing to take you to Pembrookeshire?"

"Because Maeve isn't my only wife." Sirius said suddenly. "I got slashed to pieces the other day, because I must have a bond with someone who is quite aggressive, and she recently came closer and I believe she is in Pembrookeshire."

Carlstons jaw dropped and he looked at Sirius. "So this is why you want to do a rescue mission? To find a girl you don't even know? Dude, I get it you feel her pain, but if you go in there looking for a vampire in the dungeon, you won't be coming back out again."

"Carlston, I don't think she's a vampire. He showed his hands and there were bruises all the way up his arms.

"What is that? What happened?"

"I took Maeve to see Loki, my grandfather and he said it is a blight.

It means that whoever it is that I bonded with is doing a lot of harm to herself and needs to be stopped. I am more inclined to believe it is a werewolf. A vampire would be locked up and she isn't.

I felt her in town earlier today. I can't explain it."

Carlston thought it over for a bit and then he weighed his options. He sighed. "You know if I help you, you may never come back and I don't want to be more involved than that."

Sirius hugged him tightly and he got a whiff of his shoulder and then he jumped back nearly falling onto the floor.

"You're the boy!!!!!!!!" He shouted.

"What? What boy?"

"This girl, I drove her to a dinner with the Alpha today, and she said she was looking for someone she lost and she had a piece of a jacket that smelled like you!"

He looked at Sirius up and down. "Wow she is way richer than you."

"You know how to find my wife?! Oh Carlston you never disappoint me!"

He pried Sirius off of him. "Gosh you immortal

Beings just have to have drama. You should be content with Maeve, she is a lot safer to be around."

Then he raised an eyebrow, "how did you hook up with the Alpha Slayer?"

"That's what they call her? Oh boy." Sirius said, "It's just my luck that I have to rescue a criminal."

"Hey man, she's not a criminal." Actually, she is in a bit of danger this time, she is planning on taking on the Alpha, and he is not a normal Alpha, he is cunning. I think that partner of hers is up to something. He hung out with the gangsters for a few hours today before I was asked to pick her up. He is a bad one that boy."

"She's dating someone too?"

"Nah. She said he isn't her type."

"Good." Sirius said suddenly.

"Good? You don't even know this girl and now you want her just like that? Even though you're married? I thought you were this man of justice."

Sirius sighed, "I died and came back here not remembering my past. But I trust myself. This girl, I married her once, so I know I did it for a reason. I have to find answers."

"Very well. I'm not taking you to the Alphas home, but I will take you to the hotel in town, she is staying there. I'm supposed to take her home in a few hours, so it shouldn't be a problem."

"I'll bring my car, just text me when you are about to head back and I will be waiting."

Carlston smiled at the boy who kept track of justice best in the town, he had saved countless lives in the few months he had known him.

"You make my job worth it, you little bugger." He said scruffing his hair a bit. "I'm so relieved that this girl is going to end up ok because of you. She really does just want peace for the world. She might be going about it in an unexpected way, but you picked a good one. And she is out of your league because she is a Luna of like 5 packs."

Sirius' jaw dropped. "5!!!!!!"

Carlston shrugged, "just thought I'd let you know lover boy!"
