Chapter 21: Most Villains Die Because They Talk Too Much
Ten days later, on a road leading to Konoha Village, an old man and a young boy stood by the side, quietly discussing: "Old man, judging by that person's gait and gaze, he should be a down-and-out warrior."
"Hmm," came the calm response. However, Kuroda Kento acknowledged Kudo Ryo's efforts over the past days. From being a complete novice to now being able to roughly judge a person's profession just by glancing at them, this was not only due to Kuroda Kento's patient teaching but also because of Kudo Ryo's clever application of the knowledge he gained.
"Those people?" Kudo Ryo frowned as he gazed at a convoy not far away. "Do we really need so many ninjas for an escort?" His pupils slightly widened as he thought, "They seem like mist ninjas, right?"
Indeed, these individuals emanated an aura that made them seem unapproachable, accompanied by an overwhelming stench of blood that no amount of washing could remove.
As the convoy passed, the leading merchant displayed a sign. "We are merchants transporting ninja tools from the Country of Whirlpools; here are our credentials!" There was no doubt, this was a legitimate merchant group.
Kuroda Kento coolly allowed them to pass. Once they had moved far away, Kudo Ryo looked at Kuroda Kento in confusion and asked, "Old man, are you sure those people are really no problem?"
"How could there be a problem? Our men have followed them. Don't worry; the ninjas from the Mist Village all have huge egos. If they ever show politeness, that would be surprising. Now, come on, kid; don't think about slacking off!" Ignoring the kid's eye-roll, Kuroda Kento gave Kudo Ryo a playful pat on the head and cast a meaningful glance towards the merchant convoy.
By 7 PM that evening, the two Anbu ninjas they had sent to follow had not reported back as scheduled. Everyone felt a heavy weight in their hearts. Kuroda Kento turned to one of his subordinates and instructed, "Quickly return to report to the Hokage; a squad of unidentified mist ninjas has entered our territory. Make sure to be fast!"
As soon as he finished speaking, the ninja executed a Body Flicker Technique and disappeared from view. They had a general direction, but the exact location remained unknown. Unfortunately, a lack of personnel was the biggest issue.
With Kudo Ryo's elite team considered, the whole patrol team consisted of only 12 others: three standard teams made up of one jounin and three chunin each.
"The enemy has at least 10 ninjas." They all understood that mist ninjas generally had superior lower and middle-rank abilities compared to those from other ninja villages, which was well-known.
"Yamashita Daisuke, you lead your team to trail the merchant convoy. The rest will split into two teams centered around Yamashita Daisuke's squad, searching left and right!" Kuroda Kento skillfully assigned tasks.
Following that, the ninjas dispersed. Yamashita Daisuke led the front of the group, while Kudo Ryo, as a rookie, took up the rear.
Normally a jokester, Kitano Miki now frowned in concentration. What she initially thought would be a simple mission now felt like it could escalate from a B-rank to an A-rank task if they encountered an enemy jounin.
Soon, Yamashita Daisuke signaled for everyone to stop. A fine steel wire was less than five meters ahead, connected to several explosive tags.
Even Yamashita Daisuke, the leader, looked puzzled. After all, why would a group of mist ninjas trying to infiltrate Konoha Village set such a conspicuous trap? It was incomprehensible.
Approximately 500 meters ahead, a group of about 12 ninjas were perched in the trees, watching their pursuers.
"Kamiyama Makoto, did they discover our trap?" Before the man known as Kamiyama Makoto could finish, he was interrupted.
"It seems we need to take action. That task is top secret. I don't want you to mention it again, understood?" Egawa Kouta nodded.
With a wave of Kamiyama Makoto's hand, two elite squads quickly moved forward. Noticing the two teams approaching from another direction, Kudo Ryo sensed they were coming toward him through the water elements.
Just as he was about to warn his team, he was cut off by Yamashita Daisuke's warning, "Prepare for combat ahead!" Moments later, they were engulfed by the explosion caused by the kunai and tags.
The remaining members quickly jumped back. As the smoke cleared, two jounin and six chunin emerged in Kudo Ryo's line of sight.
With no unnecessary dialogue, everyone locked their sights on their respective 'prey'! Kudo Ryo couldn't help but find it ridiculous as he was surrounded by four chunin.
"Ah! I... I can't see! Please spare me, big brothers!" At that moment, the mist ninjas surrounding Kudo Ryo seemed to be suffering from embarrassment.
"How can you know there are four of us if you can't see?" one of the supporting chunin asked. "Big brother, is there still time for me to pretend I'm blind?" The ninja who asked appeared easily amused and chuckled at Kudo Ryo's antics.
Taking advantage of their distraction, Kudo Ryo swiftly turned and fled without hesitation. After all, even if he used every ounce of strength, he was certainly not capable of facing four chunin head-on.
The four mist ninjas, now annoyed by being made a joke, closely followed him. After running for about 20 minutes, Kudo Ryo was already gasping for breath.
Panting heavily, he found a favorable spot and cried out, "Big brothers, could you spare me my life? I'm just here as a bystander, merely a person watching!"
Seeing the out-of-breath child, the supporting chunin laughed heartily, "If you had just stood there, I might have considered letting you go. But since you ran away…"
Just as this chunin was about to step forward to end the child's life, he felt a sudden sharp pain in his eyes; tears began to stream down his face. His entire body weakened, not responding to his commands.
The other three chunin also collapsed to the ground. Kudo Ryo let out a pretentious sigh and remarked, "You know, most villains die because they talk too much. You're no exception!"
As his words fell, four kunai accurately took the lives of the four mist ninjas.
