Chapter 92
Chapter 92: Prologue to Part 3 (3)
“Hoh… Argus, huh?”
Giorg spoke with a cold smile on his face.
His words were based on a report from a subordinate he had infiltrated into the House of Karmais.
In Giorg’s office, besides Giorg himself, Roy and Aisha were present. Both wanted to ask about Giorg’s feelings regarding the matter, but they hesitated, fearing it might be rude to question their lord directly.
Noticing their hesitation, Giorg chuckled lightly and addressed them.
“It’s a report from Brent in Karmais.”
“Karmais…”
Hearing the name of Karmais, a cold killing intent leaked from Roy and Aisha. Both were undoubtedly excellent as both guards and spies, but knowing how much the House of Karmais had trampled on Giorg’s pride, they couldn’t help but lose their composure.
“Hmph, both of you getting worked up over Karmais? You still have a long way to go.”
“Our apologies.”
“Forgive us.”
Roy and Aisha felt ashamed of their immaturity at Giorg’s words. Though skilled, they were only seventeen years old.
“No, it’s fine. Considering your abilities, such reactions aren’t a flaw.”
At Giorg’s reassurance, both bowed their heads.
“Roy, it seems Argus might be usable as a pawn.”
“That brat?”
“Yes, that brat who made a disgraceful spectacle during Gazel’s execution.”
At Giorg’s words, Roy and Aisha exchanged glances.
“Lord Giorg, may I ask something?”
At Aisha’s question, Giorg nodded.
“Was there a report that changed your evaluation of Argus?”
“Yes, it seems Argus decided to end the House of Karmais in his generation after being rejected for a marriage proposal from a merchant family.”
“Given that they tried to usurp the House of Zarfing, it’s no surprise no noble would want to ally with them. But to be rejected even by a merchant family?”
“Yes, even by a merchant family.”
Aisha tilted her head at Giorg’s words. According to him, it seemed Argus had simply given up on the survival of the House of Karmais.
But here, Aisha started to think, trying to read Giorg’s thoughts.
“Ah, could it be that you were waiting for this moment, Lord Giorg?”
At Aisha’s words, Roy narrowed his eyes. He had thought that Giorg considered the House of Karmais as something to be destroyed outright.
However, Giorg shook his head.
“No, I had no expectations of Argus and thought the House of Karmais would naturally die out if left alone.”
Both Roy and Aisha sensed that Giorg’s words were sincere.
“But unexpectedly, he became a usable asset, so you’re going to use him?”
“Yes, it’s convenient to have someone you can discard without hesitation.”
“Discard…”
Aisha murmured softly. Her words weren’t meant to blame Giorg but to consider whether the situation warranted using a disposable pawn.
“Ah, could it be about that matter?”
At Aisha’s words, Giorg’s lips curled into a smile.
“But can he do it? Argus is only around thirteen, right? At that age, wouldn’t he be dismissed if we brought him into the discussion?”
Roy, having caught on to what Giorg intended, also voiced his doubts.
“I told you, he’s a disposable pawn. No, the entire House of Karmais is.”
“Hmm, so we need to corner them financially.”
“Exactly. That’s why he can be conveniently moved as a pawn.”
At Giorg’s words, both nodded. Economic fear is a very effective way to manipulate people. It’s all too common for people to turn to crime due to financial hardship.
“But according to the report, Argus decided to end the House of Karmais in his generation… Can we really involve him in that matter by saying he’s financially struggling?”
“Argus said he would end the House of Karmais in his generation, but he likely intends to do so gradually. After renouncing his viscountcy, he probably plans to live quietly among the common folk. He wouldn’t choose to live in poverty burdened by massive debt.”
At Giorg’s words, Roy nodded quietly. The slight curl of his lips was nothing but a sarcastic reflection of Argus’s lack of resolve.
“Then, Lord Giorg, how far do you intend to push Argus? Considering the future, I think we should make him bear a heavy cross.”
At Aisha’s words, Giorg smiled coldly and spoke.
“Indeed. Let’s leave it to Brent.”
“Understood.”
Watching Aisha bow, Giorg nodded slightly.
(Now then, Argus… will you prove to be a useful man?)
